TIME TRAVEL TO THE 20’S
Your family just
moved into a creepy old mansion. One day, while you’re trying to do your Great Gatsby reading for school you hear
music from down the hall. You put your copy of Gatsby into your jacket pocket and go to investigate the sound. You
find a room at the end of the hall with an hourglass on the door and the
old-timey music sounds like it’s coming from behind the door.
When you open the
door, you step through a bright light and suddenly everything is different. The
door that you just stepped through is gone and there’s a calendar on the wall
that says that the year is 1924. You can’t go back home through the door and
your only choice is to go outside and build a new life. Write a story about the
new kind of life that you’ll have to live.
Questions to
consider: How will you dress, can you get a job/what kind of job would you get,
what kind of car will you drive, will you get married and have a family, what
will you do for fun?
Your story must
include details about life in the 1920’s based on what you’ve learned about the
time period. Must be a minimum of 4-5 paragraphs. No comment on a classmates
post is required.
If i was to live a life in the 1920’s, a lot of things would be different. The job I held, the clothes i wore, my goals, and my important things in life. My family, and just the scene of things would change. Going that many years back would be crazy. I would learn a lot. But, I would want to stay in my own time period for sure.
ReplyDeleteMy job would change for sure. I would probably end up being a taylor, or a blacksmith. I think so because this was the basic job of a guy back then. I think it would be actually pretty fun dealing with metal. Just shaping tools, and pots would seem like a pretty cool thing. And also, my job right now would not fit back then. My job right now is I work at the movies.
Then, my clothing would change. I don't think back then they had the brands, and style they do nowadays. Back then they used things like leather, and cotton. So, the clothes i have not would not be available. That's why the clothing would change. This has been how things would change if i was put back then.
My eyes skim over the page I was reading of the Great Gatsby, sighing heavily. Suddenly, I hear music from down the hall. I felt goosebumps raise on my arms. Both of my parents had gone to work, so it couldn’t have been them.
ReplyDeleteI slowly rose from my seat on the cough and cautiously made my way down the hall, peering around each corner. As I reached where the noise was coming from, I paused. I blinked slowly as my eyes graze over the door. On the door is an hourglass. It’s made out of what appears to be gold; I run my fingers over it curiously.
I place my hand on the door knob and my heart starts hammering against my rib cage. My breath catches in my throat as I slowly turn the doorknob. A bright light emits from behind the door, causing me to squint my eyes, but still, I open the door fully and step into the room.
I blink my eyes quickly, trying to blink the spots out of my eyes from the blinding lights. I glance around the room. It’s a boring little small room, but when I turn around, I’m alarmed. The door I had walked through is no longer there. I feel slightly panicked.
“It’s fine.” I tell myself. “It’s just a weird old house. There’s a way back.” But as my eyes graze over a calendar that reads ‘1924’.
I quickly turn and head towards the door on the opposite side of the room, rushing through it.
Three months later and I still wasn’t adjusted to my life in the 1920’s. It was different, way different than my life in 2018. First thing I had to change was my clothes. I went from wearing jeans and a t-shirt, to daily wearing skirts and dresses. Not only that, but heels. God, I hate heels. They’re just painful.
Second, I had to work even harder; I was no longer able to go into the business field I wanted. For, it wasn’t a “women’s job”. It was frustrating, annoying, just horrible. I wish I had never walked through that door.
I miss my old life, my family.
Not only that, but due to the time I’m stuck in, I’ll never be happily married. It’s not seen as acceptable for me to love and marry a women, so I’m forever stuck in a time I’ll never be happy in.
If i ended up in the 1924 i would dress like how the people would during the time i mean i don't really know what stuff i would wear yet since i didn't live in that time period the hats that they wore back then looked cool and it would be fun to experience what the people did during that time period and see how the conditions were during the time that they had and see if it was worth living in that kind of place or the way in would all the time.
ReplyDeleteIf i was to get a job in the 1920’s i would try to get jobs that didn’t have that many people that would work during times like this or they would be unemployed people during those time since stuff wasn’t that great during times and people would get hurt really easily since stuff people would get hurt and i probably wouldn’t do that stuff so i would not do this and would just get a job that didn’t involve me getting into stuff that would kill me.
I would probably get married so then i could pass on my name so then i could get more people to help out during this time but i don’t know that much because bad stuff could happen during this stuff could do stuff that don’t happen good since we would be the only would be working and they would only be working in the house so it would be good for the people during this time and would happen .
What i would do for fun is i would go do golf so then i could be like those people who will be good at everything but during does times i don’t know if stuff would be helpful and i would try to watch tv so then i couldn’t be bored or go out working for money so i could buy some cool stuff or other stuff that is around stuff or make people laugh by being a comedian so it could help me to have fun and for other people to.
If i walked through a door that brought me to the year 1924, the first thing that i would do is look at everyone who looks weird. I would ask them what the style trend and tell them about my time period and what everyone here wears. It’ll be crazy to see some people’s reactions because everyone in that time period would all be wearing classy clothes and stuff.
ReplyDeleteIt will also be weird seeing how all the towns will look like in that time period. Seeing all the cars and how they look like will be really different. The car that i would own would be what everyone else drives around. Part of getting car will be interesting seeing how it drives and how well it works when driving. I learned that the safety issues with cars back then wasn’t too good and people got in crashes a lot.
The kind of job i would try to get is to be a business owner. I would want this job because people who are business owners get a lot of money if their product is really well. If that doesnt work out, i would probably be bootlegger and sell liquor like the mafia did. Either of those jobs will get me lots of money. If either of those don’t work out, then i would most likely work in a factory. Getting a job in this period of time is seems like it is really to do so.
I would most likely get married in this time period so i can so my family history will go on in history and i would have a family. I like the idea of what the american dream is and i would like to achieve it in this time period. Also, the things I would do for fun in the 1920’s if i did not have a family would most likely be going to parties or speakeasies and have fun all night. I would probably do that every night after work or something just to something productive in my spare time.
I walked outside and the whole house looked like a mansion that was just built. I ran back inside and went into my room and put on some of the clothes that were in my closet. I wore a vest and a button up shirt and dress pants and a hat that my grandpa used to wear. The whole house was brand new but had all old lanterns and lighting. There where people all through the house asking me if I needed anything I asked where everyone was and they told me at work and said I should go I’m already late.
ReplyDeleteI asked where I worked and they said I owned my father's business that I just have to check in. I went into the garage to go get my car and go but it was gone and the garage that was once a two car garage had 12 freshly waxed cars lined up. They were the oldest nicest cars I had ever seen. I didn’t recognize any of them though there was a line of keys on the wall. A guy walked up to me and tossed me a pair of keys and said “your favorites all polished up and tuned up sir” he pointed to a chevy sedan.
I got in and started it up and drove out of the garage the yard seemed to have multiplied in size. On my ride out I saw a runway with planes all over it and a horse stable. The yard was busy with people trimming bushes and setting up stuff for a party which apparently I was having. I drove into the city which was half the size that it was and went to my fathers building which was in the same spot it was where I came from. I walked in went to my office and looked around. I was in there not thirty seconds when the door opened and a lady came in with a baby and said “you ready for lunch honey?” I had noticed I had a ring on once I came into this world because I never wore one before.
So I figured she was my wife, we left for lunch and when we got there everything clicked it was like I had known her my whole life. We had a son named Archie which was my grandpa's name. It was at that moment that I realized I had switched into my great grandfathers life who I was named after. He took over the business his father started and my dad ran when I came here. So I had all the money I needed and I was a big partier in this life.
I was married and had a kid all of this was crazy I couldn’t believe it was happening. We left lunch and drove home and I went around the yard on one of the horses. I took one of the planes for a ride which I just instantly knew how to fly and was really good at it. I was doing loops and barrel rolls and flew over the whole yard and it was huge. This was the life I was thrown into and stuck living but it didn’t seem like it would be that bad.
A lot has changed in this time period. There is no technology in the 1920’s. But i guess I have to live with it for now on. So if I have to live in this time period now, I guess I have to dress as one too. I would be wearing some common that everyone in the 20’s wears, suits. When i’m out in the city I will be wearing a suit so I look good for everyone to see. I have to dress to impress. When i'm at home i will just wear so comfortable clothes.
ReplyDeleteSince Im a boy becoming a man, I have to do what all men do and find a job. I can take advantage of my time in the future and go and invent things to become rich and smart to the eyes of the people. Maybe I want to be a songwriter and produce the biggest songs that people will listen to in the future. It would be wrong but at the end of the day Im making in living.
With my success in business and music I would have a lot of money in my hands so it wouldn’t hurt and spend some of that. I would buy cars with my money. Like I would buy from companies like Ford and Chrysler. I want to buy some luxury cars Duesenberg Model J which was one of the fastest at that time. This is what I would buy with the money I have.
Would I ever get married? I couldn’t say until it happens. Since I have to live in that time period then I would like to. Also if I do get married then I would like to have some kids.
Some fun things I would want to do is go to the parks and ride roller coasters and go to the beach to get a nice tan or something. I would do fun things with my life until i’m dead.

ReplyDeleteAs I was shaking in fear, I took a deep breath and opened the spooky door. Suddenly, a bright light appeared and everything changed. The door that I just stepped through magically disappeared in front of my eyes and there was a calendar on the wall that said that the year was 1924. I can’t go back home through the door and now I am forced to go outside and try to build a new life in an era that I don’t know anything about.
If I was living in 1924, I would have colorful dresses in shift with silk, low-waisted, not revealing too much, stockings, cloche hats, gloves and matching purses. Shoes would be pumps or strap heels in a medium or high height. My long hair would have to be cut into a bob to be in style
I would probably be working as a secretary or a phone operator. If I meet the perfect man, then I would get married and raise a family together. The car that I would be driving would be the 1924 Chrysler Model B-70. I chose this car because my mom drives a Chrysler 300.
My hobbies would definitely be spending time with my children playing outside, spending time with family and friends, reading books and listening to music.
ReplyDeleteIf one day I were to be stuck in 1920’s I would live so much different because it is like making a whole life in a new different generation. I would be wearing the flowy dresses with red lipstick going to the popular places to meet up with friends. The fashion is a must that i would have to do as my job create the new looks that many girls would wear. A store after my name that many people would go to, the next thing is make the best to have money for myself and be able to maintain my own family. Make different hairstyles with each outfit with my flat shoes go drink a milkshake with my friends to meet some boys. I be a different person more outgoing and there would be no technology distracting anybody many would be thankful to be able to go out than being stuck home laying down on our phones.
Even though there will be hard moments that people go through I would always help out who may have lost things. I would try to keep everyone together because if we separate that is when things start to get worse that is something that should not happen. Many things had happened that if I were to be in one of those situations I would try to keep myself and my own family healthy because that is the only thing that would matter. A lot of people lost their homes and jobs that we all should stick together to help one of each other to keep us going.
My car would be 1922 Packard Twin Six Model 3-35 Special Runabout the color blue since that is my favorite color. I would use it every time i would go out and when i hang out with my friends. I would be too young to get married in the future yes but I would enjoy my life for now and have fun. I would go to every local shops because it would be where everyone likes to hang out meet more friends. The milkshakes place for sure because people love to dress nice and want to be there to have fun and relax away from their family for a little. Listen to the music that they have the best fun songs to dance to.
In the summer time go to the beach and wear the cute swimming outfits that they had with no worries around me. The big parties that many had I would attended to them since a lot of people went and it was in big houses. The writing too is so interested because they had their own unique way of writing their books, newspapers and many more. The life there is completely different from what it is now it seem way more relax and fun. But these are some things i would do if i were stuck in the 1920’s enjoy my life there.
Once i have entered i would first try to blend in because i would be in my modern day clothing and be so out of style and draw so much attention to me. Then i would try my best to find a job to get me through. I would try to get and get a job somewhere simple but also one that pays well so that would be able to buy the nice fancy dresses that the ladies wore for different occasions. Winter outfits would be nice long dresses to fit the season and for the summer shorter skirts, but not too short with a nice blouse.
ReplyDeleteI would work really hard in my new job and do my very best and hopefully get a promotion so i can buy fancy cars and clothes to keep up with the time period and stay in style. I would eventually, like in the game, go to get an education in medicine and meet my future husband. Soon we would be married and maybe i wouldn’t have to work as much anymore so that i could focus on improving our home. I would like to decorate that also for the time period and gradually be able to upgrade it for the times that will eventually become modern so that we could keep up with the time period for every year. We would have a nice car like a 1924 Chrysler in deep blue.
After me and my husband were married for sometime, we would decide to have at least two children, the first one being a girl and the second being a girl. They would be about two or three years apart. They would both a have name fit for the time period like for the boy, William and for my girl, Elizabeth. I wouldn’t have to work anymore because by then my husband would be able to support the family while i was a stay at home mom. I feel as if this would actually be something i’d like in this time period also. For fun i would have my friends over for afternoon drinks and they would all bring over there children and we would give our kids to the nanny and all sit and gossip about the week and what we’ve heard.
Today it seems that I have transferred back in time. It was 2018 before I walked through the door and changed my life forever. I walked around what I thought was my house, although every detail seemed different, down to the wall details and the silverware on the table. I walked into I what I thought was my dads office to just be a little toddlers room. I walked up to the calendar and the year was 1924. I really thought I was going insane. I walked outside just to rush in fresh air into my lungs and there was horses with carriages outside.
ReplyDeleteI ran back trying to get a hold of what happened, but nothing seemed to be getting into place. I saw a young African American man walk inside my house and he called me “sweetie” gave me a kiss on my forehead and walked right past. I didn’t know what was going on, i felt like i was dreaming. I asked him if he knew who’s room it was and he said it was jr’s room. I had asked him who it was but didn’t even look at me like I was crazy, he didn’t blame me for forgetting things, for he had warned me to take it easy on myself because there was another on the way.
I looked at my tummy and I wasn’t bloated but i was just craving pickles and walked away from the conversation, i was walking across town and everything seemed like my old home just different names with different faces everything was taken care of and more peaceful. I enjoyed it here but I can not see myself staying here and calling it my forever home. My husband for whom i saw put a ring on it knew something was wrong and told me it’s okay if i dont go to work at the factory today. I stayed home and waited to see my first born be home.
My husband told me that the little boy was still at school and wouldn’t be back till noon, I was getting ready to lie down for a nap when I heard a little boy come running through the house yelling “mama, mama” he was throwing around some type of paper in the air and it was just a report card from school. I said “congragulations jr.” and went on, i was already closing my eyes… it felt like the longest nap in the world but when i woke up it was back to the right time and year, i must admit i so wish i could’ve stayed in that era.

ReplyDeleteThe 1920s was somewhat old-fashioned and depressed. but on the other hand it was beautiful. I would live in a normal house not so big because you do not need a super large house to be happy. with a car, of course, because I would like to go to work or take the kids to school, I would have a clothes shop so I could make the clothes for my children or my family members. my children will go to school in the morning and I would leave work early and spend a lot of time with them.

Everything was very cheap and sense we were a wealthy family we could do a lot. Life in the 20’s was great for my family and I. Though many not of wealth suffered of poverty in this time period.
ReplyDeleteSo i walk through the door and stepped into a different time period and it says its 1924 ima flip out in a good way and bad way because i'm gonna be like i just time traveled this is like physically impossible then i'm gonna freak out because i can't go back. And i won't be able to see my family or friends any more then i'm gonna have a long time to process that this is actually happening. But once i accept im probably going to tell a lot of people that i came from 2018 and there gonna think im crazy but i will have my phone with me i have a iphone 8 and i will show them then they will believe me. And i will mass produce my phone start the company apple in 1924 become the youngest billionaire ever and just invent all the stuff that i already now that was invented in 2018 and i will probably become the first ever trillionaire because im gonna be the owner of every big company. And i will be set for the rest of my life and get every hot model during that time period and generations of my family will be set with so much money.

DeleteWhen i walked through the door i was in a new and different looking place than i was use to. I saw men and women dressed differently. The phone i have doesn't work so i just threw it away cause it wasn't worth keeping cause the technology was to advanced for the time. But when i walked out of the house i went and asked the people who were outside walking around what year it was. When i got an answer someone told me it was 1920. That was almost 100 years back in the future. So when i tried to go through the door i came in it didn't work it was just a regular door into a room. So i came up with a plan. i went around town no one knew who i was and they didn't have information or any record of who i was. That meant i could make a name of myself and become one of the wealthiest people around.
ReplyDeleteAlso cause when i walked through the door with $100 in my pocket which meant i had money to support myself for a while. That gave me a couple of days to find a way to make money quick and easy. So the fast money was to get in the selling of alcohol. And because there weren't any recorded of me existing that meant i cause commit the same crime or get away with stuff easily. Also when i have enough income i would buy the best clothing and house that money could buy. Also the most newest and expensive car made in that year.
Once everything was set with houses and income i would find myself a loyal and beautiful wife and spoil her with wealth and clothes. Also same as gatsby i would throw parties and have an alliance with the police and government so i wouldn't be able to get in trouble for what i do like serve alcohol which is illegal in the 1920. When everything was good with cops i would plan to have kids. When i get bored of the city i would go on trips to different places like go fishing or hunting. And i would construct new businesses and gain more money. And if anyone tried to get in my way i would remove them from my path of success and power.
When my kids grown up i would make a new life where they don't see the money and wealth and have them work from the bottom and live a decent house and i wouldn't spoil them as i did with their mother. They would have to work for there stuff like cars houses and the things they want to get. And when they reach a certain age i would slowly start showing them the truth and money and when i die i would split the money between my kids and have the rest of the money go towards the dogs i would buy
I have arrived in the year 1927. Which is lot different then 2018. Finding a job making friends literally everything is going to be different. Nothing will be the same, i dont know how i got here or how im getting back.
ReplyDeleteI must make the best of it. In the house i noticed pictures of a family, and i was in them. With a handsome man and a small child. I was confused and didnt remember them, but they remembered me. It must’ve been around 3;30, when he got off school he ran in and hugged me and said i love you mommy. I loved this kid and i don’t even know him. But this family that i didnt even know was honestly the best gift ive received, im greateful for it.
