The Link Between Money And Corruption Is More Insidious Than We Thought

It's human nature to look at white collar criminals like Bernie Madoff and cast them off as greedy, money-grubbing crooks.
But what if we all have a little Madoff inside us just waiting to rear its ugly head?
Researchers have increasingly explored the subconscious link between money and corruption -- called behavioral ethicality -- to find out why even morally conscious people are able to cause harm to others.
In a first-of-its-kind study from the University of Utah and Harvard University, hundreds of participants proved that simply the idea of money could lead them astray.
In four studies, 324 participants were asked to perform simple tasks, like word scrambles, that gave them subtle reminders of money with words or images. Control groups performed tasks without the money cues.
Afterward, researchers tested them in different ethical scenarios, such as watching an actor perform unethical tasks and deciding how likely they would be to do the same. Another test placed them in a hypothetical job hiring situation and asked them how likely they would be to hire a candidate who promised to divulge insider information on a competitor.
Across the board, participants who had been given money-related tasks had a greater likelihood of unethical intentions, decisions and behaviors, study co-author and Psychology professor Kristin Smith-Crowe told Business Insider.
"What was happening with our participants is that the exposure to the concept of money was actually affecting the way they were thinking," Smith-Crowe said. "The money cues were triggering a business decision mind frame, which meant that they focused on a cost benefit analysis as motivation to pursue their own self-interest, rather than thinking about things more broadly."
Even people who took tests with super subtle money cues -- such as a word search that contained money-related terms -- were more likely to engage in unethical behavior, they found.
"It makes a lot of sense that greed would produce evil," Smith-Crowe said. "But we were interested in the fact that maybe it's not even love of money, but just the mere subtle exposure to the concept of money that, in and of itself, may also be corrupting."
The question now is whether we can stop people in places of power from making the kinds of self-promoting decisions that tend to harm others. Many companies ask employees to undergo ethics training, but Harvard researchers say that isn't enough.
"If ethics training is to actually change and improve ethical decision-making, it needs to incorporate behavioral ethics, and specifically the subtle ways in which our ethics are bounded," wrote Harvard researchers Max H. Bazerman and Ann E. Tenbrunsel in their study, "Blind Spot: Why We Fail to Do What's Right and What to Do about It."
But according to Smith-Crowe, studies like hers are further-reaching than just the business world.
"It's still pretty amazing to us that these subtle cues to money can have that big of an effect on our decisions and our behavior," she said. "We feel like we know right from wrong, but we have to recognize that we're affected by things without realizing it."
-Are you surprised by the findings in this article? Why or why not?
-Do you believe that money is powerful enough to corrupt anybody?
-How might this article relate to our reading of The Great Gatsby? Has money affected the morality of any of those characters?

  1. I’m not very surprise about what i’ve read in the article. According to what Smith-crowe said, I agreed with her. Most people expect elders to do what’s right, but the real question is if we know whats right from wrong? Everything we do is a sin and no one is perfect but what the guys did. They knew they were wrong but they did it anyway. I do believe money is powerful enough to corrupt someone’s mind, but it depends on who the person is and their mindset. Everyone is their own individual but some people think money brings happiness, which it does in some ways. Reading this article relates to The Great Gatsby novel by reflecting on Gatsby and his money/life. The morality of the characters, money has a big difference to do with it but some people who are rich doesn’t act like it and the ones who don’t have money acts like they are. I’ve come to realize that poor people try to live their best life and spend a lot of money to be noticed but they don’t realize doing that. They will always be broke and rich people stay rich by living like they’re broke.

  2. Money can do wonders to some people. YOu can be the nicest person ever. Once you get money though you get greedy and an ass. So it can corrupt individuals. Money in the Great Gatsby has affected people. Yes money has affected the morality of 2 characters, Wolfshiem and Gatsby. They do shady buisness just to get their money. We know this because its said in the book that Wolfshiem does Shady buisness and he wants Nick's Help.

  3. I’m not really surprised by the results in the article because I know many people who are very greedy and love money more than anything else.I don’t believe that money is that powerful to corrupt people because if you have money you think have it all. You could be lonely, rude, and bitter because that's all you cared about when you grew up so you lost everyone because money was everything to you. I feel like it just corrupts the person who is wealthy. This article relates to Great Gatsby by Gatsby being wealthy and just having parties like its nothing and when he talks about his past he doesn’t show much sympathy because he became rich through it all. I think money changed Gatsby and if he wasn’t as wealthy he would be different.

    2. I agree with you. The article does not surprise me at all. I also agree that money has changed Gatsby the most. I think he would be a different guy without money.

  4. Honestly, I am not surprised that people reacted in the way that they did, due to how important it is in our society. People are just very greedy and would do anything to get more and more money. Once people have money they get all materialistic. Even the thoughts of having money can make a person different. Money is something everyone wants and needs, we need it to survive without it we really can not do anything. I do not think money is very powerful. In my opinion, i feel like it only corrupts wealthy people. This article can relate to our reading of The Great Gatsby. Some of the characters in the book seem like they have or will be easily corrupted by money such as Gatsby’s friend and also Tom’s girlfriend Myrtle wilson. I think Gatsby is hiding something and may have done something to get all of his wealth.

  5. The article is about money. People wanted to see if money or the concept or idea of money had caused any unethical things to do. Of course it did cause people to do things for themselves or make decisions for money. I wasn’t surprised at all. People want money and do anything for money. It is a common thing in the world everyone wants money, everyone wants fame and power. I do believe that money is powerful to corrupt any one. People don’t want to struggle to make money. Everyone wishes they are a millionaire by doing nothing. Money can get you anything you want and can make you do anything. This article relates to the great gatsby by that everyone we ever read in the great gatsby is rich. From Nick all to Meyer. They all have money. Mone is the main thing that Jay Gatsby uses to get Daisy back. He wants to show her his house by setting up all the parties and trying to get Nick to get Daisy to come over so that she can see how rich gatsby has really become. Money is a huge thing in this book and in life. I would say that money has affected Gatsby the most. He uses it all the time and we really don’t know how he even gets it at all. I think it comes from the help of meyer and he is really shady and does crimes. So i think it has changed Gatsby the most.

  6. I am not surprised by the results of this article. Money changes people and its usually not for the good. I mean look at a lot of lottery winners. They let money get to their head and usually have bad outcomes. If given a chance people will do shady things to obtain money. It really is a matter of choice. It's believing in doing the right thing. Money doesn't make people really happy. Maybe for a little while but that's it. Yes it makes life easier, but it can also cause problems. I think money is a big part of the great Gatsby. Everyone has money. They spend money like it's nothing. Money has not bad them a better person. I mean look at how money affects Nick, Daisy, and Gatsby. So many issues. Money changes them.

  7. I am not surprised by the findings of this article, money makes people go insane. They will do anything that they can to get their hands on money. Or they will do whatever they want when they get the money, which is called being money happy. I think that money has the power to corrupt anyone. No matter who you are, money gets into peoples heads and makes them feel like they have all of the power in the world and they use it to their advantage. Not realizing or being concerned if they are hurting the people around them. This article can relate to the book the gatsby by mr gatsby being wealthy and using that against everyone and making him thing that he is better than everyone else. because of his money he feels that he over powers and can get whatever he wants whenever he wants.

  8. -Do you believe that money is powerful enough to corrupt anybody?
Yes i do, i think if someone is money hungry enough it will take them over and they will change, and not for the better. Money is something you don't wanna mess with, if it gets to your head some people will go over board, others will stay the same and know how to handle it. People who grew up with money probably won't value it as much as everyone else who didn't .

-How might this article relate to our reading of The Great Gatsby? Has money affected the morality of any of those characters?
Gatsby is new to money so it affects him but not in a bad way, he just likes and trys to show it off almost every chance he gets, and some people might like it will others won't.

I am not surprised at all about the article. Money can change anyone from the best to the worst or the worst to the best. Money to some people means everything while some people money means nothing at all. Its all how your mindset is about the amount of money you have. If you are one of those people that loves money and will do anything for it you are greedy. If you do that you are more than likely to have no one in you life that likes you because all you want is money nothing else. Money has all the power it can change anyone. It can affect anything and everything. The factor about money in the book “ The great gatsby “ changes the overlook of the book. If Gatsby didn't have money it would of changed the way his parties are how big his house was and the place he lived. It would of changed the whole book.

  10. I'm not surprised with this article at all. It basically states that the love of money an greed can change someone dramatically. They're love for money can change the point of view on someone like there spending habits or there way of life can change when they lose it all. I think the great gastby is the perfect example of greed and the love of money. Jay gatsby the the perfect example for what money can really do to you and get in your head as you earn money.

  11. Am i surprised about the findings in the article no because i know there are many people would become different and greedy when you bring up money. But do i think that money is powerful to corrupt someone that is a debatable question because you can get people do something for you if you get the right people and the right amount of money that your talking about. But not everyone is like that you can offer them like $800,000 for their dog and they will say no because those people money isn't everything for them. And this article can be related for the book great gatsby because for example gatsby is new money and he is more flashy with his money and tries to show it off. But people who were born into money they don't to flash it because they had all that money for their whole life.
