The Link Between Money And Corruption Is More Insidious Than We Thought

It's human nature to look at white collar criminals like Bernie Madoff and cast them off as greedy, money-grubbing crooks.
But what if we all have a little Madoff inside us just waiting to rear its ugly head?
Researchers have increasingly explored the subconscious link between money and corruption -- called behavioral ethicality -- to find out why even morally conscious people are able to cause harm to others.
In a first-of-its-kind study from the University of Utah and Harvard University, hundreds of participants proved that simply the idea of money could lead them astray.
In four studies, 324 participants were asked to perform simple tasks, like word scrambles, that gave them subtle reminders of money with words or images. Control groups performed tasks without the money cues.
Afterward, researchers tested them in different ethical scenarios, such as watching an actor perform unethical tasks and deciding how likely they would be to do the same. Another test placed them in a hypothetical job hiring situation and asked them how likely they would be to hire a candidate who promised to divulge insider information on a competitor.
Across the board, participants who had been given money-related tasks had a greater likelihood of unethical intentions, decisions and behaviors, study co-author and Psychology professor Kristin Smith-Crowe told Business Insider.
"What was happening with our participants is that the exposure to the concept of money was actually affecting the way they were thinking," Smith-Crowe said. "The money cues were triggering a business decision mind frame, which meant that they focused on a cost benefit analysis as motivation to pursue their own self-interest, rather than thinking about things more broadly."
Even people who took tests with super subtle money cues -- such as a word search that contained money-related terms -- were more likely to engage in unethical behavior, they found.
"It makes a lot of sense that greed would produce evil," Smith-Crowe said. "But we were interested in the fact that maybe it's not even love of money, but just the mere subtle exposure to the concept of money that, in and of itself, may also be corrupting."
The question now is whether we can stop people in places of power from making the kinds of self-promoting decisions that tend to harm others. Many companies ask employees to undergo ethics training, but Harvard researchers say that isn't enough.
"If ethics training is to actually change and improve ethical decision-making, it needs to incorporate behavioral ethics, and specifically the subtle ways in which our ethics are bounded," wrote Harvard researchers Max H. Bazerman and Ann E. Tenbrunsel in their study, "Blind Spot: Why We Fail to Do What's Right and What to Do about It."
But according to Smith-Crowe, studies like hers are further-reaching than just the business world.
"It's still pretty amazing to us that these subtle cues to money can have that big of an effect on our decisions and our behavior," she said. "We feel like we know right from wrong, but we have to recognize that we're affected by things without realizing it."
-Are you surprised by the findings in this article? Why or why not?
-Do you believe that money is powerful enough to corrupt anybody?
-How might this article relate to our reading of The Great Gatsby? Has money affected the morality of any of those characters?

  1. I was not completely taken back by the findings in this article. I found it reasonable that a person could become less ethical when it comes to greed. The only part that I was taken back by, is that even the thoughts of having money can make a person different and unethical. It would make sense to me that people become mean when money is involved because wealth tends to make a person do whatever they can to become wealthy. If $100 was put in front of two people, chances are they would fight over it rather than one of the two just handing over the $100. People love money and would to whatever it takes to have more than what they have. I do not think money is powerful enough to just corrupt anybody like it’s no big deal. I think it would take a lot of money to do that. Although, if a person has a strong hold on specific ethics and values, they wouldn't just let that go because of money. If you hand a decent person a handful of money, they would do the right thing with it, but if you hand an ignorant person a handful of money, chances are they would become even more greedy and want more. In that sense i think money could corrupt they kind of people you would expect it to corrupt. This article can relate to the reading The Great Gatsby in the sense of majority of the characters being wealthy and having a lot of money. I do not think that money really affects any of the characters of this story. Daisy does not leave her husband for Jay Gatsby because he has more money than her husband, she does not leave him because she does not believe in divorce and the same goes for her husband, Tom. Tom has an affair for a long time behind Daisy’s back and does not leave her because of their values. In the reading wealth does not really have an importance to who the characters are because they all stick to their values and ethics.

    1. i agree.Money is a scary thing. People will fight for wealth. But there int a point to it. I do think any amount of money could corrupt some. 100 dollars isnt much to you but to someone homeless and broke they would kill for it.

  2. I think money could corrupt someone 100%. Money does evil things to people without out them knowing. Money will ruin families. You need money to survive for the basics but people want more money then they can actually handle. Its crazy what people will do for money.
In the “Great Gatsby” he has a really nice house, nice cars and a lot of money. However he isn't really happy. He has all that stuff be he i just looking for one thing. People think money makes you happy but it really doesn't. To a certain point it makes you happy but when you have everything you need what's the point of it.
I am not surprised by this article. Money will show someone's true greed. It can and will corrupt you.

  3. am not surprised about the findings in this article. It is reasonable that people become unethical when they have money. They believe they are above everybody and can get away with things just because they have money. I believe that money is powerful enough to corrupt people. Especially in today’s day in age everything is really expensive. It is hard to live off of very little money so people do what they can to get it. This article relates a lot to the story ‘The great Gatsby’. There is Tom’s mistress who is poor and controls her husband but when she is with Tom she knows he has money and is most likely a reason why she is with him.

  4. Im surprised with this article because it talks about a lot of stuff. I think that money is sometimes powerful but sometimes is not. Money can ruin your whole life. It calso do bad stuff to you and your family members. Also it can take control over you and your stuff. I think it does relate to the great gatsby because when gatsby bought the mansion and start throwing parties he spent a lot of money. And yes the money did affect the characters morality.

  5. I am not really surprise about finding this article because, sometimes you just know that having money or not having money it changes how are you, i mean for some people. Yes, i believe that money is powerful enough to corrupt anybody, because when you have money people start acting different and sometimes there is people that do not know hot to act with it. Sometimes money is a big thing to other people. The article can relate to The Great Gatsby because in the book Gatsby is like rich and people do not believe on how he is like if he was telling them fake stories about himself. Money affected Gatsby in some type of way because when it was the meeting between him and Daisy, he wore these nice close so she can see how he is and what he has

  6. I am not surprised by the findings in this article i think its pretty obvious that humans become less aware or things and less caring when it involves wealth or greed. Its in human nature to act this way. Also yes i do agree that money can corrupt anyone that gets his/her hands on it. If you come from a lower class family and then one day you get handed 5 million, its more than likely that it’ll change the way you act or the way you are. Most people nowadays dont even know how to act like the new rappers, they all flex and brag that they now have money and you can tell by their songs that money has completely changed the way they are.
In the story, gatsby hasnt changed because he has loads of money but he did want to impress daisy when she came over with nick, daisy on the other hand has loads of money as well and all she wants is nice things, she doesnt know how to act, but gatsby is different because he doesnt like to show off, unless its daisy.

    1. I agree because people are different when money comes into play. They become more greedy. I also agree that money can be super powerful.

  7. i am not surprised by the findings in this article because it’s reasonable that people become different when they have money and people change when they do. I believe that money is powerful enough to corrupt anybody because it doesn’t matter who you are, just the fact that you have money makes you think that you’re more powerful than anyone else which can make people greedy and think that they’re so much better than everyone else. It’s not the same for everyone but when some people have money, they go overboard and think they have everything as long as they have it and others don’t care so much for it but still have it. This article can relate to the Great Gatsby because mostly all the characters in the book are rich and wealthy. Gatsby is one of the characters in the book that has plenty of money and really doesn’t know what to do with it. He wastes it on unnecessary things like always having parties and always tries to dress the best. Money has definitely affected the way he acts because he sometimes takes things for granted like having parties quite often and buying alcohol that was illegal during that time. He is that type of person that will basically do anything to impress anyone just because he has money and isn’t worried about getting caught.

  8. I was not surprised because money is a very powerful thing. A lot of people like money. I mean who doesn't? If someone has money. people begin to act differently. Sometimes in a good way, mostly in a bad way. Money makes people crazy, or rude. People think they have the upperhand when one has more money than the other. I don't believe money is powerful enough to corrupt someone. It is a very powerful object, but not powerful enough to take over someone's life. It really depends on how you get the money too. It also depends on the person you are, if you see a 20 dollar bill in the street, are you going to take it or ask who it belongs to. In the Great Gatsby, Gatsby and Daisy have a lot of money. They are very wealthy people and live an extravagant life. Money plays a big part. It's how Gatsby got his nice clothes, house, and how he throws his parties. Money hasn't taken the morality of any characters. They live how they normally do. They're used to having money so it isn't new to them. If it were a new thing, they definitely would act different because they're not used to it.

  9. Yes I believe that money is powerful enough to corrupt anyone. I say that for a lot of reasons . Money can make people spiteful , they will become distant, and you realize who’s your real friends and who’s not . It’s shows the real in people . But then some people don’t get corrupt cause of money . For example , I’ve fed my closest ones when I only had $5 until the next week. It was me and my brother and I had one more buck ($1) on my plate and both of us got 50 cent cakes . If it doesn’t corrupt someone it shows there loyalty to someone. But then there’s times when I went broke on people who had money to prove that there not loyal and they weren’t true friends . Money has corrupted the Great Gatsby In my opinion .but then again it didn’t because he has parties and invites everyone . But It corrupted him cause he thinks he can win anything and everything because of how rich he is . I don’t think money affects anyone in this novel though . Because money didn’t make anyone unloyal . For example, it’s not like money won Daisy over or anything . On top of that it’s not like Daisy is broke and doesn’t have money she just doesn’t know how to act . She just wants attention and wants nice things .
