A Flapper Who Called Great Neck Her Home

ALTHOUGH F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald lived on Long Island for only a year and a half, they are one of the area's most celebrated couples. They are remembered as glamorous symbols of Jazz Age extravagance. They are also remembered for their great talent.
Scott's short stories earned him wealth during his lifetime, and his novels, especially ''The Great Gatsby,'' secured him literary prestige after his death. Zelda's talent was less recognized in her time but much more multi-faceted. She wrote both short stories and a novel and became a proficient ballet dancer. She also had a third creative outlet -- painting -- that is often overlooked.
That talent is showcased in a new exhibition, ''Flappers in Fashion: Zelda Fitzgerald & the Jazz Age,'' at the Long Island Museum of American Art, History and Carriages in Stony Brook. The show incorporates an exhibition of 54 of Zelda's paintings. But also on display are many photographs, documents and artifacts from the early 1920's, when the Fitzgeralds were part of a literary and Broadway crowd that lived in Great Neck.
The Fitzgeralds moved to 6 Gateway Drive in Great Neck Estates in October 1922, two years after Scott, then 26, gained fame for his first novel, ''This Side of Paradise.'' Zelda, who was then 22, was known best as the inspiration for her husband's flapper heroines, although she was also developing skills as a short-story writer.
Some of the exhibition's artifacts relate directly to the Fitzgeralds, like a silver-plated hip flask that Zelda gave to Scott during World War I. To evoke the free-wheeling Fitzgerald lifestyle, the museum has recreated a Jazz Age party with period furnishings and mannequins in a setting loosely based on the Fitzgerald’s living room.
Zelda began painting when she was 25; her work appeared in several exhibitions throughout her life, but received little attention. Her paintings in the show range from depictions of life of the 1920's to ones with religious themes, created in the 1940's. She died in 1948.
''Her pictures don't necessarily fit into the category of impressionism or realism but somewhere in between, both real and dream-like,'' said Joshua Ruff, the museum's history curator. ''She had a wonderful sense of color, these lush tones of coral, pink and blue that really tie in with the colorful clothing styles of the Jazz Age.''
The couple’s high-living antics could often be disconcerting for Zelda. ''She was a bit overwhelmed by the huge hordes of people she entertained,'' Ms. Cline said. ''It was both quite exciting and quite tense-making.''
When the Fitzgerald’s left Great Neck for Europe in 1924, Zelda began to pursue her own creative careers more diligently. She studied painting in Capri in 1925; her husband had just written ''The Great Gatsby,'' set in a fictionalized version of Great Neck. Two years later, back in the United States, Zelda began intensive training in ballet. Her interest in dance would eventually have an influence on her artwork. ''The figures in her paintings truly leap and move…and there's this elongation of the feet and hands that brings to mind the way muscles are used in dancing.''
In 1930, Zelda suffered her first breakdown. Diagnosed as schizophrenic, she underwent treatment in a series of mental institutions for the next 18 years. She wrote her only novel, ''Save Me the Waltz,'' while a patient at the Henry Phipps Psychiatric Clinic in Baltimore in 1932, but painting became her foremost pursuit.
''Her painting at this time was very useful to her as an artist because she was able to try new techniques, and very helpful in boosting her low self-esteem because she was able to work at something she was good at,'' Ms. Cline said.

Zelda died in a fire that destroyed Highland Hospital in North Carolina, where she was then institutionalized. The fire also destroyed many of her paintings. Scott died of a heart attack in 1940, while writing ''The Last Tycoon,'' his novel about Hollywood.
While Mr. Ruff believes Fitzgerald's artwork has aesthetic merit on its own, he also views her paintings within a psychological context. ''There is an almost anguished look to be found in these pictures,'' he said. ''Not just that but a mixture of optimism and anguish that matched her own experience at the time.''

-Compare and contrast Zelda’s troubled life with that of the fictional troubles of Daisy Buchannan.  What is similar about their lives and struggles and what is different?
-Zelda and her husband were both artists in their own right; she was a painter and he was a writer. But why do you think that she was never famous for her art the way that her husband was for his?

  1. The similarities of Daisy and Zelda is that they are both women and they both had a daughter. They are also similar because of how they were being treated in the society. Their difference is that Zelda works as an artist and Daisy does not. Zelda and her husband were both artists in their own right; she was a painter and he was a writer. I think she was never famous for her art the way that her husband was for his is because Zelda talked about religion in her painting and her husband talked about the Roaring Twenties. I also think that Zelda’s husband’s work was more accurate for the society because that’s what people mostly did during the 20s.

    1. Iain, you did great job answering the questions. It is s little short since it asked for at least 350 words ,but at least you answered it that all that counts for. You really had some good ideas and points in your response. I think the last thing you sad was completely right as she did focus on more thing then partying like her husband.

    2. Good job iain, i like the comparisons you used for zelda and daisy

    3. I believe that is a good comparison and that you're right about how paintings weren't really acknowledged back then.

  2. Zelda artwork is less famous than her husband Fitzgerald because he wrote the book, “The Great Gatsby” which was more realistic and relatable. Zelda artwork was lush tones of coral, pink and blue that really tie in with the colorful clothing styles of the Jazz Age.'' A lot of people liked
Zelda’s work because it created a mood and always had a team to it. It made people had more self-esteem and comfortable. While Fitzgerald book was making more money then her artwork. It also made him more famous.

    1. making money and famous are two diffrent things. you can be wealth but lay low in life. when your rich you dont need to be on top of the world and have everyone have to notice you.

  3. Zelda and Daisy are two women that come from the same time period. They were both wealthy but, being wealthy and well known can have its costs. Zelda had mental issues later in life. Daisy did what she wanted and thought there were no consequences.
More people have heard about Zelda's husband Fitzgerald's work than her paintings. To be honest I have never heard about her until now. Almost everyone has heard and/or read "the Great Gatsby". If not than you might have seen the movie that it's based on. I never knew that his wife Zelda painted or that some of her paintings are famous. I think more people read books than look at paintings. I think its easier to be a famous writer because people have to buy your book. There are more copies that you can buy anywhere. A painting can only be observed in one place. Most artists become more famous when the die than when alive unfortunately.

    1. I say the same. I think more people are well known when they die than when they are alive and about Zelda and Fitzgerald. In the passage, it said that Zelda has famous artworks but I think her husband is more known because of how detailed his book is and the topic he talked about.

  4. The lives of zelda and daisy are not very different since daisy is based on zelda. There life are very silmar of how they lived every rich lives. They both lived in new york and both had a child. One of the main difference of their lives is their husbands . Tom is a racist and hits his wife and cheats on her and doesn’t even tries to hide it. While scott worked hard to get rich and made money for her and cared about his family. Zelda was a spoiled child and was rich when young. And daisy had money since she was born into it. And they were very social during the 1920s. It seems like daisy had relied on Tom for money. And that zelda left scott ,but came back after his book launched an made a lot of money and most people think she is a gold digger and just wants his money. One of the main differences of them is that zelda did something than nothing she had painted during her life until she died.
Scott and zelda were both famous during the 1920s she was a painter and he was a writer. The reason why she was not as famous as him was because of his success. When you are married or with a famous or well known person you will be known as their partner. He was already famous when she had started ,so he basically had a head start. But also that she was also known as the inspiration of the characters in his books. So most people she was around with knew her as that and not really as a painter. And that her painting didn’t really focus on the 20s but everything so it wasn’t really with the other. Also a book compared to a painting is that everyone can read it over and over again. You can see a painting and be like me and see nothing special about it ,but a book tells a story and you can imagine it in your head. Also I think that zelda kind of did this in her free time since it wasn’t her job and she never needed one ,so she might of kept this to herself.

    1. I agree with what you said. I agree that they both in a wealthy life. I also agree that Daisy’s husbamd is a jerk and racist and Zelda’s busband in not.

    2. I agree with you. People are more well known for their books. I agree with that when I see a painting I don't see what the big fuss is.

    3. I also agree with you. They both had a wealthy life. And Daisy's husband is a jerk in the story and zeldas husband isn't

  5. Austin MacClemmy

In this passage that i read there were Two women that were married to men. One of the woman's name was Zelda. She was a milti-profesion person. She wrote short stories, and novels. She wasn't just into the writing field she also loved to paint. She was a good painter but that usually was overlooked. She also was very good at ballet dancing. There is also another woman named Daisy. She she is very similar to Zelda. They both lived rich and wealthy lives. They both were born into the wealth. They did not need to work hard for it like one of the men that was in the passage. His name is scott. He worked hard for his money, he worked to support his family that he loved very much.there was another man in this passage that was completely different then scott. He was abusive towards his family and he was born into wealth. This man's name was tom. The only thing that scott and tom had in common was there wealth the and they both have a family. The other things are completely difference between tom and scott is, racist and abusive while scott is down to earth and loveable. Another similarity between zelda and daisy is they both rely on their husbands for money and they are gold diggers. They don't start to get known for there skills until they die.

  6. Zelda and daisy are both are both females from the same time period and they both are wealthy and have a daughter and live in new york. And the difference is they both have different type of husband daisy husband is a jerk he abuses daisy, racist, and a cheater. And zelda husband is more of a man he goes out and brings money to the table. And zelda is new to having a lot of money and is flashy with it but daisy was born into money and now she depends a little more on tom. Zelda and her husband are both famous on their time period 1920’s she was a painter and he was a writer but when they got married people knew and her husband scott is a little more well known compared to his wife zelda. And zelda didn't take painting serious because it wasn't her job she just painted to keep herself entertained not like her husband.

  7. in this passage both are females that both are wealthy and both have a daughter while living in new york. the difference of daisy and zelda is that daisy has a husband who is a cheater, and always abuses her, he’s also a racist and is just very rude to her. zelda has a lot of money and is new with it, so there for she is very out going with showing off her money. while daisy was born into having money and depending on everyone else but herself. neither of them really knew how to depend on themselves, money was always basically handed to them. which obviously didn’t help them in the long run. Zelda and her husband are famous from the 1920s when she was a painter and he was a writer. but her husband is alittle bit more well known and a bigger deal than she was. she really wasn’t that big on painting and felt it was more entertaining than it being a job for her. daisy wasn’t able to find that peace with anything she had tried.

  8. Compare and contrast Zelda’s troubled life with that of the fictional troubles of Daisy Buchannan. What is similar about their lives and struggles and what is different?
Unlike daisy, Zelda was an artist and was good while daisy doesn't do much and she is being cheated on. Zelda on the other hand was not cheated on and had a healthy relationship. Daisy was born in Louisville, she is from a “Good Family” daisy represents a beautiful and charming. Zelda was a spoiled child, born in alabama, cared only about boys and swimming was very bright but uninterested in school.

-Zelda and her husband were both artists in their own right; she was a painter and he was a writer. But why do you think that she was never famous for her art the way that her husband was for his?
I think she isnt as famous for her art because she didn't put it out there as much as her husband did.

  9. Zelda and daisy are both wealthy and well known. They both lived in New York and had one child. Zelda and daisy hoped for their daughters to be a fool and they said quoted, “ I hope she’ll be a fool, that’s the best thing a girl can be in the world, a beautiful little fool.” Both of them were very social. The difference about them both is that Zelda was spoiled and was rich when she was young and daisy had money since she was born. Another difference is that they both have different husbands. Daisy husband was abusive. Zelda was also an artist and daisy wasn't. Another similarity is the way they was treated in society. Zelda and her husband were both artist in their own right. She was a painter and her was a writer. I think Zelda was never famous for his because people love reading books than looking at paintings.

  10. Zelda and Daisy Buchanan are alike because they are both women of course and they have a daughter. They get treated the same in society like in the book and Zeldas real life and some of the things that were different is that Zelda was an artist by painting and drawing and Daisy was just a housewife. I believe that Zelda’s work wasn’t really famous because back then people cared more about books, music, partying, and etc. They didn’t care about art work so I believe that’s why Zelda isn't as acknowledged than her husband. Painters back then was hard because there will only be one of that painting and if someone wanted that painting there isn’t a copy but when there’s a book you can make millions of copies from that.

  11. Zelda and Daisy may live the same lives but they live them in different ways. Zelda was married into money and daisy on the other hand was born into money. Daisy's husband beats her and cheats on her. Zelda on the other hand lived the perfect life where her husband respected her. Zelda was a painter and a drawer. Daisy on the other hand was just a house wife. I believe zeldas work was never noticed due to her husband being so famous. They don't acknowledge paintings back then they were more focus on books and other stuff

  12. Zelda’s troubled life, and the fictional trouble life is very different. The actual troubles was that he was very poor, and he could not do anything about it. But, in his fictional trouble is was that he could not find anyone to love him.The real trouble was really bad. But, love comes later, you don't need it to survive. You need money to survive though. This is just one example of this. I also don't think she was famous for her art because nobody picked up on it. Nobody realized what it meant, or how it related to life. That's why she was not as famous as her husband.
