New York remembers September 11th

Ground Zero in Lower Manhattan filled up Monday morning as Americans gathered to commemorate the 16th anniversary of 9/11.
Visitors wore pictures of loved ones around their necks and tucked red roses and American flags into the engraved names on the bronze parapets surrounding the reflecting pools.
East Rutherford, NJ, resident James Taormina came to the site for the very first time to remember his brother, Dennis, a 36-year-old vice president of finance at Marsh & McLennan, who died in the North Tower that day.
“It feels like yesterday,” said Taormina, 39. “I woke up that morning to a phone call from my mother telling me the plane had hit the building and my brother was inside.
“I held hope for weeks until I saw a magazine that showed where the plane hit and I figured he was killed on impact.”
“I never liked driving in the city, but maybe there was a little emotional stress as well,” Taormina said about why he never came before. “It’s a little easier for me now.”
The ceremony at Ground Zero is marked by six moments of silence — to mark the times each plane hit the Twin Towers, to mark when each tower fell and to mark the attacks on the Pentagon and Flight 93.
The names of the nearly 3,000 victims of both the 9/11 and the 1993 World Trade Center attacks are also read.
The annual recitation included touching personal remembrances.
“I know you’re looking down at me with a big, big smile on your face,” said Connor Murphy while fighting back tears. He lost his father, Kevin James Murphy.
Magaly Lemagne broke down before collecting herself to read her brother’s name, David Prudencio Lemagne. She remembered the slain Port Authority and New Jersey police officer as “the embodiment of selflessness and bravery.”
“I hope today as we commemorate the 16th anniversary of 9/11, everyone will stop for a moment and remember all the people who gave their lives that day,” said Lemagne. “Maybe then we can put away our disagreements and become one country again.”
Young grandchildren of 9/11 victims also attended the ceremony, though they’d never gotten the chance to meet their lost relatives.
“I wish more than anything that I could have met you,” Ruth Daly said after reading the name of her late grandmother, Ruth Sheila Lapin. “I’m very proud to be your namesake. I hope you’re watching down on me from heaven.”
Dignitaries at the Manhattan event included Mayor Bill de Blasio, Gov. Andrew Cuomo, Sen. Charles Schumer and former Mayor Mike Bloomberg.
President Trump and first lady Melania Trump somberly stepped out of the White House to observe a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m., when American Airlines Flight 11 struck the North Tower.
They bowed their heads with other staffers on the South Lawn as bells tolled and placed their hands over their hearts as taps was played.
The president will participate in a 9/11 observance at the Pentagon, where 184 people were killed when American Airlines Flight 77 crashed into the building. Most were service members in the Army and Navy.
Trump, who was in New York during the terrorist attacks, spoke of the strength of America after 9/11 and gave thanks to our military.
“We shed our tears in their memory, pledged our devotion in their honor and turned our sorrow into unstoppable resolve to achieve justice in their name,” the president said of the 9/11 victims. “The terrorists who attacked us thought they could incite fear and weaken our spirit, but America cannot be intimidated, and those who try will soon join the long list of vanquished enemies who dare to test our mettle.”
Trump also praised the work of Sgt. Isaac Hoopii, who responded that day and rescued as many as 20 people when the Pentagon was struck.
“He sped to the scene and raced into smoke and fire — few people would’ve done it,” Trump said. “In the pitch black, he began calling out to people in need of help. Isaac heard faint voices and he wanted to answer those faint voices. One by one, he carried people out of the burning rubble.”
Vice President Mike Pence and US Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke delivered remarks at the Flight 93 National Memorial near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, where passengers brought down the plane during a courageous revolt against the al Qaeda hijackers.
Bells tolled and names of the 33 passengers and seven crew members of United Flight 93 were read. On Sunday, ground was broken on the park’s final element — a 93-foot Tower of Voices with 40 tubular wind chimes, one for each victim. It is scheduled to be completed by next year’s anniversary.

I remember first learning about 9/11 about in 5th grade. The school that I believe that I was in Cedar Grove Elementary. At first I thought that it was just another topic to talk about in class, but as we went on, you could see the blur in people’s eyes. I knew that my friend’s father was involved because he was a firefighter in Toms RIver. Although it’s mainly known to be fact that the firefighters from the nearest area’s of New York came from everywhere to volunteer. My friend said that her father survived and helped everyone out to come out of the building, but because of the toxic fumes for example, all the gas from the plane and the natural fumes religating with the fire was not a good combination. The information that i find the most interesting from the articles is to know that people were jumping out of buildings to know they wanted to get it done and over with the pain than burn alive. You can actually see video’s and hear the thump in them to see that the bodies were falling down the side like drops of water. It wasn’t real i refused to believe that this really happened a place where you believed having the safest place in the world, I mean you only see these things in movies. You can only imagine the tears and heartbreaking calls that family members with the devastating news that the rescuers and heroes of this day were not able to come back and enjoy the last warm dinner together, it’s sad to think or even see what a rough exoierience they had to go through to see everyone fall down with them

    1. I think its very interesting that you knew someone that was in 9/11, and survived. And them jumping out of the buildings was the worst thing to read. To know that people would rather give at will to themselves then to try to get out. Also, its weird to think everyone before 9/11 thought America was probably the safest place. So sad to know that people planned to kill all these for their religion.

    2. I agree with you , it is very sad to think of the families and the time they lost together because of this tragedy. I also think the people that jumped out the building were brave, they knew death was coming and wanted to beat it to the point, i admire that!My grandfather was also at the towers the day of 9/11 although he left early for a business meeting its so interesting to actually know of a survivor and be able to learn about the building and events that took place there.

    3. Ive also watched the videos and it breaks my heart to watch the burning, the people falling and even the people on the ground freaking out . Even though i was only about 7 months old when 9/11 happened im glad i was not there and if i was i dont know what i would do. I think i would have jumped and committed suicide rather than burning alive .. what would you guys do if you were in the building when the tower started to crash and burn?

  2. When I first learned of 9/11, it was the basic’s of ‘the twin towers went down’ and ‘it was a terrorist attack’. In earlier grades they never really went into the details of what really happened on 9/11. It wasn’t until about 7th grade when we really got into the topic. I remember talking about the families that were affected, watching old news reports that aired during the events or that had broadcasted the events happening. We watched videos on how people had jumped from the buildings just to escape the flames that engulfed the building. We also learned about the reasoning behind the terrorist attack, and how the twin towers weren’t the only places affected by this disaster. Not only that, but we also discussed the plane that ended up going down, taking innocent lives.
What really stands out to me about this article is the fact that there are quotes from nine eleven, from people who were actually there. Or stories that have been passed throughout the years from multiple people. The article also goes over how the child and grandchildren of victims were affected by the deaths of their loved ones. I feel like this is important because you get to hear and know how other people were affected. Especially since no one I know or anyone was affected from this disaster.

    1. it's believable to this day that the generations of ours are still learning about 9/11. They observe the positive and negative impact in peoples lives. I very much so believe that you explained that in the best way possible and the details were very well vivid.

  3. The first time I learn about 9/11 was in elementary school because at the time when it occur i was only 1. I was introduce to this topic when i was in the 2nd grade we color in flags to show respect to everyone who has suffer and show that we are together no matter what. The way i felt during this was interested the only reason because i was young and it was crazy to think this actually happen. It is a sad event that everyone has to remember each year. Since it was not long ago that this happen it makes people sad. When i was in the 2nd grade they told us that our most famous towers which being the twin towers two planes crash inside of each one . It caused a lot of people’s death and injuries in some many ways. It made me think a lot because you never know it could have been anyone in that building. It was an awful thing that anyone has seen. This made us closer as a whole that is how it should be during these times. But this was the way i learn about 9/11 it is good to know.

  5. The first time i’ve learned about September 11th was probably when i was in 4th grade but we really didn’t learn that much or talk about it that much until 7th grade. I remember after I first heard about it i was scared and upset but after discovering more about it i felt upset and i felt bad for the families and the people who have died or suffered due to the tragic event that happened. The class and I heard about the planes crashing into the towers, we also heard about the debris falling and the firing burning. So many people were afraid to be burned or crushed that they had no other option but to jump out of the windows and fall to their deaths which is extremely upsetting especially for those who had to witness the event occurring.

The information in the article that i found to be the most interesting is how the people felt about their lost ones and the many others who have died during the event. People would pay their respects to the parapets, they’d place flowers or candles near by, they’d also have a moment of silence for them as well. The thing that I find the most upsetting is how the people who were little kids back then are paying respects now to either their grandparents or their mother, father, uncle, aunt, etc. To think that they could have lost their mother or father or any member of their family who was in the towers at that time is upsetting and a bit painful to see and especially heartbreaking to know that when they were little they had to be told that their mother/father or other family member wouldn’t be coming home that night or ever again.

  6. I remember being in my first grade class with Mrs.Guadango and it was 9/11 and she taught us about it. I thought it was horrible that all those people died and that someone someone would do something like that to other people. I thought it was sad that there where all those people who didn't have mothers or fathers anymore. I thought about how would feel if someone I knew was in those towers. I was lucky the only people I knew that had anything to do with it where my two uncles who were called in to help from the police and fire department. I was lucky though a lot of my friends new people who died that day. They were their neighbors, family members, and friends. I remember the teacher crying when she taught us about it. One of my friends got up and got her a box of tissues. We were sitting on the carpet and Mrs.Guadango was sitting in her rocking chair that was about to fall apart. I find the memorial ceremony very interesting. I think it was very respectful to read off the names of all of the people that lost their lives when Flight 93 went down. That must have been a sad event to be at especially if someone in the crowd knew anyone on that flight. I liked how they built a ninety three foot tower, one foot for every life lost. 9/11 was a horrible and tragic event that we will never forget.

  7. Q: When do you remember learning about September 11th for the first time, Explain? What did you think and feel?

A: When i first was learning about 9/11 i wasen’t really thinking about how big of an impact it caused on America. The first time i might recall learning about september 11th was in second grade by my teacher Mrs. Simmons. When hearing the news i was still young and didn’t really put together that it was something that big considering bad things happen often on a daily basis. As i grew older i’m starting to wrap my head around this being an actual thing that happened and many people died and so many heros dying that day over this horrible catastrophe. I remember really understanding what happened while listening to the song “where were you when the world stop turning” by Alan Jackson.

Q: What information in this article do you find most interesting? Explain your feelings about the article and what sticks out to you?

The article didn’t really interest me at all, if anything it’s kind of sad and maybe remorseful but i feel since it didn’t effect me or my family personally i don’t really have feelings towards the whole tragedy. It may sound kind of dark, selfish, or even ungrateful, but the whole thing had no effect one one year old me or my family.

    1. I agree with you about the article being upsetting and sad. It's upsetting to hear about people being little kids and asking where their family member is and having to be told what actually happened to them.

    2. I agree with you when I first learned about it I didn't really understand it. I understood a lot of lives were lost and that it was sad. I didn’t see the big picture, I didn’t see the big picture. I didn't see how it changed the world, how it changed everyone's lives, and how it would forever go down in history. It has been 16 years since it has happened and every year on 9/11 we play the footage and people cry, we will never forget 9/11. Hopefully after 50 years it will still be remembered unlike Pearl Harbor, it's been about 50 years and there are people that don't even know when it happened or what even happened. I hope that we never forget the lives that have been lost for this country.

    3. I feel the same way. Definitely as I got older I started to understand what had happened with 9/11 more and more, but when I was younger I didn't really understand it. If anything, I was quite indifferent to it in my younger years. It's not that I didn't care about what happened, I just didn't understand fully what 9/11 was about. Not only that, but none of my close friends or family were affected, so it never affected me. Still, it is quite sad to hear how other people and other families were affected by this tragedy.

  8. In school they like to take about a week of september to learn about 9/11. Freshman year of highschool in Mr. Vanhise’s class we did my first ‘big’ project on it. It was with a group of people and you had to draw something from 9/11, write 2 paragraphs, and find pictures, and peoples encounter with it. Doing the project wasn’t bad, we all worked fine and did all the requirements. But just learning about it and hearing peoples experiences really like gets to you. I never really thought about 9/11 but now really learning about it makes me upset. But i really do like learning about September 11th because you really need to realize what people went through.

    * Reading through the article i think that it’s interesting that Trump was in New York for 9/11 and is now the president. LIke he was a bare witness and is just crazy that nothing bad happened. And how the vice president now is delivering remarks to the Flight 93 museum. Also how many people are able to come out with their stories of loved ones passing and never being able to talk again. Lastly, that one person, Taormina, still finds it hard to drive in the city after losing her brother in the 9/11 attack.

    2. I also thought it was interesting that Trump was at 9/11 and that he became the President. I felt happy that people could finally go to the ceremonys after 16 years of not being able to face it.I could imagine how Taormina felt because if I lost my brother to an attack so horrible I would be scared to even go close. Reading how it affected families made me upset espically watching the attack on tv. I wish that one of my teachers would have made us do a project on it to learn more because what you did sounds interesting.

    3. I agree with you. I also did the project and learned alot about 9/11 while doing it. I also do love learning more about the attacks. Just how people dealt with it and how the terrorists did it. Just very cool to learn about.

  9. The first time I learned about what happened on 9/11 that i can remember was in 7th grade. I had Mr. Delprete as a history teacher and he showed us videos and pictures. We also got to read letters written by those who lost family in the attack. I felt horrible for the families who had lost loved ones. I also felt extreme hatred for the horrible people who are taught and raised to want to hurt and kill innocent people. I also believe that the government also had something to do with it. After truly learning about the incident I will never trust the government or sketchy foreigners again.//What i found interesting about this article was the perspectives of a bunch of different people and how it affected them. President Trump tells us the story of sgt. Isaac Hoopii who raced into the fire on 9/11. One by one he carried people out of the burning rubble. This article is full of stories about the dreadful day. Though many people became heros that day and many families will forever be thankful for those brave people. This article also tells us about the memorials and ceremonys preformed on the anniversary of 9/11 each year. Doing this has extremely helped those who lost loved ones.

  10. When I first learned about 9/11 I was very young. I think I was around 7 years old. He came up to me on 9/11 and asked if i knew what today was. I really never heard of it so he said let me tell you. He started off telling me that I not even a year old at the time. But, he explained that very bad people flew a plane into a high building in New York (The World Trade Center). He explained how at first everyone thought it was a mistake. But, then another plane flew into the other building. He told me he was out golfing with his dad, and sped home because his mom called the two of them. He told me he did not know if i would reach one year old because he was so scared, along with my mother thought that we were going into a world war or something along those lines. He said they hid in a dark room with the news on. Nobody did not really know what was going on. But when i heard all of this I was amazed that people would do this, and that something like this actually happened. I liked learning about it, but also realized it could happen any time, again. That's how I remember the first time I learned about 9/11.

In the article, I found many things interesting. For starters, I found that about 3,000 people died. That's horrible. How can you live with yourself after doing something like that. Devastating so many families. Also, I found out president Trump held a ceremony and a moments of silence for the 9/11 memorial. Also, during the attacks, Trump was actually in New York in his pent house. These things are just some things I found interesting.

  11. When i was about 9 years old my mom was talking to me about my grandfather and she showed me his hard hat that he used to help clean up. Also, my mom was showing me the newspaper of the 9/11 buildings in flames. When i was in elementry school i remember my teacher talking about how back then the airports were not as highly secure and how you were aloud to bring a knife on the plane. Now these days you can't even bring a water bottle on the plane,u also cant bring any liquids above 3 ounces.
I thought this was a touching moment while i was reading this essay,(Young grandchildren of 9/11 victims also attended the ceremony, though they’d never gotten the chance to meet their lost relatives). I also learned a lot of things from this essay like. Visitors wore pictures of loved ones around their necks and tucked red roses and American flags into the engraved names on the bronze parapets surrounding the reflecting pools. Before i was reading this i was thing of trump and how he felt and would act to this. President Trump and first lady Melania Trump somberly stepped out of the White House to observe a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m., when American Airlines Flight 11 struck the North Tower.

  12. The first I ever learned about September 11, 2001 was in the 4nd grade. My class talked about it for the whole week. We read stories about people that were either in the towers or around their at the time. I even saw videos when the second plane hit the other tower. It was one of the most disturbing things that I have seen. As i little kid you have so many emotions when you see things like this. Some kids will probably cry and be scared. Others may be confused or just may not care in some way. When i first heard about 9-11, i was a little confused. This was the first time something big like this happen so something that a lot of people were shocked. The article was interesting but their was one thing that stuck out the most. The this that stuck out the most was “The names of the nearly 3,000 victims of both the 9/11 and the 1993 World Trade Center attacks are also read”. It was everything about that day that was shocking but knowing that so many people die for nothing. This was the one statement that stuck out to me the most.

  13. When i was little i use to watch the news with my grandma, i remember 9/11 may 2005.. The news was on all day and they replayed the tragic event over and over. They said all the victims names and sent prayers and there condolences to the familys. My grandma started tearing up as they showed the families putting roses on the memorial of the victims. She began to tell me where she was on that day than, 4 years ago . I didnt really realize how important 9/11 was until years later than all i was facinated with was the fact my cause was born right after the first tower fell and my aunt was actually watching the news during deliver and her doctors were getting distracted. Now i think back and have so many questions like most americans, i wonder how could someone not only put thousands of people at risk but themselves ? or how can you feel no remorse for the families and people you impacted? Than i think of all the theories online about how the robbers high jacked the plane with a box cutter, now maybe its just me but i dont think i would give a hersheys kiss up or a damn box cutter . It boggles my mind how someone gave up a whole plane full of people including themselves to someone threatening them with a box cutter, i would think captains would be trained for things like this but i guess not. Back than alot of things were different now everything is more advanced but still theres all these questions that boggles my mind and makes me question if it were even terrorist . Theres a part of me that thinks this was an inside job. With that being said wether or not it was an inside job or not im saddened that america even allowed this type of tragedy to take place, you can say it was terrorists but i believe america has too much power not to be able to prevent tragedys like this to strike on our home land.

  14. When i learned about 9/11 was when i was in 7th grade and my teacher talked about it but i really didn’t think that much about the incident that happened because i just thought it wasn’t that serious thing that happened i just felt bad for the people that died in the tragic disaster that went on and I felt bad for the people that lost the people i felt scared to even though it happened 10 years ago from then i thought that it would happen again but i never did happen which would have been a big disaster if it did happen again. What i find most interesting is that isaac hoopi helped save 20 people out of the pentagon when it got struck by the plane and he was a hero for those people that he helped out of the rubble and fire that there was because most people that were there probably didn’t help those in need during that time.my feelings on this article is that i feel sad and have fear and hope it doesn’t happen again. What sticks out to me is how many people were there to see there loved ones at the memorial at new york.

The first time i learned about 9/11 was probably when i was 7.i don't remember that much but i don't think i learned it at school but i do remember watching a documentary with my parents, that was the first time i watched a documentary on 9/11 and my first one too.while i was watching the documentary my first thought oh it's just a movie that my parents were watching but i got older the first thing i remembered was seeing on the tv was the north tower getting hit by a plane.when i asked my parents what they were watching they told me ‘’nothing’’.i never thought about since i was young and thought it was a movie but when i got older i figured it was a 9/11 documentary and didn't think much of it so didn't feel sad, mad, happy or any type of feeling about till 6th grade.ever since 9/11 airport security in the usa has been more strict and american people that see people from the middle east and that practice muslim religion think that they are terrorist and are mean and rude and are racist towards them.we should never forget 9/11 and that marks the 16th anniversary of 9/11.

  16. When I first heard about 9/11, I was in 7th grade and we were all talking about how it happened and who caused it. At first I didn’t really feel anything. I remember feeling bad for everyone but I didn’t really feel sorrow or feel sad about it. When we watched a video on when it was being broadcasted live, it was saddening to see people jumping out of the building hoping they would survive or hearing that over 2000 people didn’t make it, but in the end it made me realize that anything can happen at any given moment and that some things are just out of our control. Later, while learning about 9/11, the teacher asked if anyone wanted to share if they knew anyone that was a part of 9/11. Some students told us about one of their family members died while trying to escape the towers. Hearing everyone’s stories really got to me and I started to think “What if one of my family members died in it or was in one of the hijacked planes.” During the time of me learning about this, I became really interested in the whole plan of this and the making of the of the twin towers. It amazes me how well put this plan was and how long it took to be fully effected, but sad to see how much devastation and destruction it caused. What really stood out to me though was seeing people calling everyone about the incident and everyone being worried about each other. Hearing everyone's sad voice while on the phone with people who knew their fate is really devastating. This attack is truly one of the biggest tragedies in history.

  17. The first time I remembered learning September 11 was in Mexico in the fourth grade. My teacher asked us to leave all our things aside. Our questions about how the class became so serious, our teacher began to explain, told us that it was the most horrible thing she and most of the United States.
my teacher asked us to remain silent for a minute, we all wondered why she and she told us that two planes crashed into the twin towers and we were all surprised. we all asked what was going on and began an investigation and it was a very sad experience to watch the video and look at people who pretended to throw themselves out the window in fear of being burned to die in an attempt to escape, looking at people crying in pain and make people run for fear of being trapped, this was a sad thing to see and know, but it will always be remembered as a very important moment

  18. The first time i remember learning about 9/11 was when i was in about 5th grade but were just learned about what happened with the twin towers and didn't get into much detail. Further in the years, in about 7th grade we learned that osama bin laden the leader of the al-qaeda group cause 9/11. We also learned that there were more than two planes in the attack. In learning about the other planes we learned that the pentagon was hit and the fourth plane was crashed by the passenger aboard the plane. They did that to save the civilians on the ground from being injured or killed. Yet we didn't get to see the horrible images or videos that i watched this year.. This attack toward america makes me feel scared, paranoid, surprised, and hopeful cause this was the first major attack in america after world war two. This also showed that even america could be a target even if we’re one of the best and organized countries in the world. It made me paranoid cause nowadays even a bag or trash can can become place where someone could place a bomb. Which could be traced back to a terrorist group. In the other spectrum it made me hopeful ,even tho it was and awful thing to happen to america, because it made america become closer and unite as one by having people help each other.

Information that sticks out to me in the article is that every single person's name that was killed in the attack is said and that they have six moments of silence for the six times the planes crashed and the towers fell. These events are amazing because people give every single person theirs own time . they show them the respect that they should have.

I remember the first time I learned about September 11 it was second grade my teacher was mrs pukash and I was south Toms River elementary the only reason I remember the whole conversation was because it was the beginning of school and it kind of struck my never because I was still young and sensitive it was still within a few years so we didn't have as much information as we do now but we were discussing about how men took over a plane and they wanted to hurt and kill innocent people because of the fact they believed in different things than us such as religion and rights and then we had a work sheets of the towers and we colored them in and the words never forget to conclude my teacher made 9/11 a very interesting topic in class that day and it made me look at the situation differently

The article was very informative and very interesting one reason is because I like how it explains how Vice President Mike pence and interior Ryan zinke heard remarks that flight 93 passengers were trying to take over and made it come to an crash landing I think that was the most impressive thing I can do in that situation because of the fact that u have a live terrorist and you're in a situation to hurt your country and you go and your brace and don't really care if u live or not and help bring down a plain and save a couple of more innocent people's lives to conclude I think that the heave passengers are true heros

  21. I agree with gaven when I first heard about it I didn't understand it. when my mom first told me I had to see something to understand what was happening. I remember my moms face when she was talking about it, I felt bad and I didn't know what was happening.

  22. The first time i heard about september 11th was from my father. He was a toms river fire fighter at the time and i went with him the fire house on the anniversary. I was only five years old then. There were three other firemen there and they were talking about it in the news i asked him what they were talking about and he explained it to me. I remember feeling angry and sad wanting to grow up immediately to join the military. But then i was told because of my diabetes im not able to join the military but i am aloud to join the fire department or the police department and from that moment on that has been my dream. My father then explained to me that he was suppose to be in the city that day only a block away from the towers for a doctor appointment. But when he woke up that morning he had second thoughts about going this was before anything had happened. My parents argued back and forth for an hour because they were going to get charged one hundred dollars if he went or not. Then in the middle of them arguing the first tower was hit and it was as if they switched views on the fight. My dad being a firefighter wanted to go to help and save people my mom knowing my dad would die before letting anything happen to someone else said no but he went anyway by the time my dad made it there both towers had fallen but he was still able to help the FDNY and NYPD get people from the ruble. In the article the part that stuck out most to me was the part about Sgt. Isaac Hoopii and how he ran into the pentagon and pulled soldiers and other workers out. As the president stated it takes a lot to run into a burning building let alone one that was hit with a plane and have the strength to lift people out and rescue them most people would have stood there in disbelief but he and thousand others in Virgina and NYC ran face first into danger a certain death for the benifit of others.
