Student Question | What’s Your Dream Job?
By MICHAEL GONCHAR  MARCH 10, 2016 5:00 AM March 10, 2016 5:00 am

What do you want to be when you grow up? Has your dream job changed as you’ve gotten older? Have you already started investing time and effort to try to make it happen?

In “The New Dream Jobs,” Jenna Wortham writes:

When the National Society of High School Scholars asked 18,000 Americans, ages 15 to 29, to rank their ideal future employers, the results were curious. To nobody’s surprise, Google, Apple and Facebook appeared high on the list, but so did the Central Intelligence Agency, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the National Security Agency. The Build-A-Bear Workshop was No. 50, just a few spots behind Lockheed Martin and JPMorgan Chase. (The New York Times came in at No. 16.)

However scattershot, the survey offers a glimpse into the ambitions of the millennial generation, which already makes up more than a third of the work force. By 2020, it will make up half. Survey after survey shows that millennials want to work for companies that place a premium on employee welfare, offer flexible scheduling and, above all, bestow a sense of purpose. These priorities are well known and frequently mocked, providing grist for the oft-repeated claim that millennials are lazy, entitled job-hoppers.

But it’s important to remember that this generation was shaped by a recession, an unprecedented crush of student debt and a broad decline in the credibility of all kinds of institutions. Stability is an abstract concept to these young workers, so they instead tend to focus on creating a rich, textured life now, rather than planning for a future obscured by uncertainty.

Students: Read the entire article, then answer the questions below:
— What’s your dream job? Why do you want that job? Do you think you’re well suited for it?

— What qualities are most important to you in your future career? Salary? A sense of purpose? Scheduling flexibility? Feeling challenged? Feeling appreciated? The ability to get ahead? Liking what you do or being good at your job? Anything else?

— What investments are you willing to make now to help you get your dream job eventually?

— What companies would you want to work for? Are you surprised by the National Society of High School Scholars survey rankings? Why?

  1. My dream job is to be a photographer because i like taking pictures.I think i'm well suited for the job because my hands are still and i can focus the lense easily.I want this job just because of the fact i enjoy it its fun to me i guess or something i don't know.

Whats most important to me is just i know i'm doing something that someone else could enjoy.Think about it when u hang up a picture or set a wallpaper or anything along those lines its something you enjoy. If you go out somewhere nice you admire the view i wanna be able to capture the image so you can hold on to it. Id also like that my schedule would probably be flexible because i want to be able to have time to have kids and take little things like holidays off to spend time with my family.

The investments i doing are i'm practicing after i'm done with taking the necessary courses you have to take to pass high school i'm taking the photography class.I'm also taking a class for photography in the Ocean County Collage next summer. I also just practice anytime i see a nice view or someone would ask me to take a picture i would do my best to make sure it came out good.

I honestly don't know who id work for i might just work for myself i dont know im not sure.I was shocked by the ratings only because Build A Bear Workshop was number 50.

  2. What is your dream job? I have two, I would like to work with abused animals and nurse them back to health and find them a good forever home. My second dream job is to become a lawyer. To become a lawyer you have to go through 7 years of school after high school, 4 years of undergraduate study and 3 years of law school.m I think i would be well suited for this. Liking what you do, being patient, and having a love for animals are very important qualities if you want to do anything involving animals. You have to love what you do to be able to interact with the animals, you have to work and be patient a lot of the times because animals can be stuck up sometimes, and what I think is most important is that you need to have a love for animals to create a bond with them. Creating a bond with you animal patients is super important because animals need to feel loved in order to trust you enough to do anything with them. Some important qualities to become a lawyer are to be very patient, and it is really important that you like what you do because if you don't then you are not putting forth all your potential and you are not helping defend your client very well. Some investments i’m willing to make now are to start studying law and to help the animals I will also start studying their body structures, how they move, and how they do everyday things. I would also do lots of researching and collecting and analyzing data to help me with either job. It is very important to know what you are doing and to know how to handle most situations you will get put in. Some companies i would want to work for are Levinson and Axelrod LLC. One organization i would love to work with is ASPCA which stands for American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, It is an organization that helps to prevent cruelty to animals and every donation goes towards helping the animals regain stability and heath. They are trying to put an end to animal abuse and neglect. The National Society of High School Scholars survey was rank 11 in 2015. I wouldn't be surprised if their number grew intensely over the last 2 years. I wouldn't be surprised because they are an amazing organization and within the last few years over 18,000 people joined.

    1. I think that's cool to work with abused animals and try to help them get better and nurse them back to help. We really need people like that in our world nowadays.

  3. When i'm older i want to be a lawyer.I have been wanted to be this since i was like 6 years old.I have not been investing time or anything yet because i have 4 years to collage,i will start investing time into it jr year.I want the job because i like to argue and i always win when i argue with someone. So i think that would be a great job for me.The qualities that are most important to me in my career is graduating college and getting into a good law firm company. Also to earn the right salary i should earn. The purpose of me getting this job is being something successful in life and having a job i like and will actually enjoy.I would want to work as many days i can get because it gives me more money and will get better and become a better lawyer. My feelings will never change for this job because I have been saying I wanted to be this since i was little.I will give all my time and my heart into this job because i will really enjoy it and won’t stop until i win.I think I do have the ability to move forward in my dream of being a lawyer. If i don't have the ability to move forward I will try my hardest to get to it.I will be liking what i do because i Like arguing with people and somehow i always win so i think i'm gonna be pretty good at what i'm doing.
I would love to start investing time into it my jr and sr year because ill already have a head start on what we will learn about and not have trouble or be stuck on any problem. After high school i would love to try to get into the best law firm business as possible i can get into.I honestly was shocked by the high school scholars because i can't believe they asked so many americans to rank their future jobs.

  4. My dream job is to have my own line of makeup. And to create the design and the color. It is not going to be easy let me just say that. I have been playing with makeup ever since i was younger but now i'm actually trying and getting better every time. My grandmother is a hairdresser and i get my beauty tips from her. There are going to be a bunch of things i will have to do in order for me to achieve my goal. I will have to get good grades so i can enter to go to cosmetology school. It will be hard to get into because everyone goes for cosmotology. Yes ok there are going to be tons of girls trying to get into beauty but i think they think it will be all fun. Most of it will be but you have to put time into everything your doing. Like say your doing someone's hair and you mess up. You just messed up there appearance. That why you have to take time and study everything you need to know befor you make this my profession. My mom lets me cut her hair at home and I think I do a pretty good job. And I'm getting my hair dyed soon and my grandma will teach me how she does it. And when I get more and more into it I will go to business school and learn how to keep all my balances equal so I can start my own line of make up. That's my dream job.

    1. Kelsey i think that is a wonderful job for you.Cause your makeup is really good all the time and I think you will be able to have your own makeup line if you keep your grades up and get into a really good collage. You should also start looking into how the makeup process works and maybe try to start now.I would do that because if they ask if u ever had any experience or knowledge of it you can say yes and you will have a better shot getting into the collage you want.Good luck and i hope you get to make your own makeup line and succeed.

  5. My dream job is to be a chef. I always thought that it would be cool to cook for people, like family or friends. Even to an extent of owning my own restaurant. Cooking is something that I was always interested in because when I was growing up my parents would always cook for me and other family members and I thought that it was cool. So I have started making meals for me and my family. There is a good chance that I will go forward with this choice but there is many other options that i might want to do sometime in the future. Also it's cool because there is many different things you can make, between breakfast, lunch, dinner, and dessert. That is the main reason why I have chosen to do this.

    1. Nick,I think being a chef is a good choice. I think that because you could have your own restaurant and be making meals for tons of people. Also you can have you're own recipes and people will have to come to you're to have it. So I think that is a great choice for you're gream job.

  6. My dream job is to be in the MLB. I want to be in the MLB because I enjoy playing and watching baseball. I play for Juniors at Berkeley Little League. I play on a travel team. I don't know if i'll make the MLB because only a handful of people make the MLB. So I will have to work very hard. And I am not going to let go of my dream. I will try my best to make it to my dream.

The qualities that are most most important to me from my dream job. The most important quality is salary. You make millions of dollars. All i need money for is to buy a house, car food etc. Another thing that is important is if you like your job. And yes I would like my job because baseball is my favorite sport and it would be cool if I get to play my favorite sport for a professional sports team. And I like things that are challenging so facing pitchers that throw over 100 MPH will be challenging.

Some investments that will lead me to get my dream job. One is to get good grades in school. Another is to practice and pay attention in baseball. I would need to practice on fielding so I won't make any errors in the field. I will need to practice hitting so I can hit the ball hard and far. Also I would need to practice on pitching so I can strike out a lot of kids. I will need to study more so I get A’s in all my classes. Those are some of the investments I will need to make to get to my dream job eventually.

The company that I would want to work for is MLB. It is the same company as my dream job. You get to play your favorite sport on a professional sports team. Yes I was surprised about the National Society of High School Scholars rankings. I was surprised that Build-A-Bear workshop was ranked number 50. I don't think it should be ranked number 50 because anyone can get that job and it's very low pay so you would need to get another job to. I don't think it's surprising that Google,Apple and Facebook were high on the list. I wasn't surprised about that because they are very high paying jobs and for google all you have to do is play on the computer. Those are some of the jobs that surprised me that most.

  7. My dream job is to be a vet. I want to be a vet because I love animals and I would love to help them. I think that i’m well suited for it. The purpose that I want to be a vet is because I want to help all of the animals and travel to other countries and help every animal I could find to help them. The other reason i want to be a vet is because I know that there are a lot of places where there are animals that can’t be helped because there are not vets in poor places. I would like to work everyday to have time to attend every animal that needs care and go to work really early and come back from work at night. I would feel challenged because it would be a little difficult to do a surgery to an animal if necessary.

  8. My dream job is to be a cosmetologist for hair. I want this job because i love doing hair. I've been doing hair since i was 12 and all i did was do french braids and the older i got the better i did. I know how to french braid, dutch braid, fishtail, waterfall braid, and i know cut my siblings and moms hair and i'm learning how to dye hair. I think i will be well suited for it because when i go to school for hair i'm already going to know how to cut and do all kinds of braids so i'll be ahead of the game. There is nothing else i love more than doing hair. The qualities that are most important to me for my future career is making money for me and my family when i get older. I want to make sure i can have a nice house and supplies for my childrens living. Yes i want a salary i need money and if i didn't have money i would be living on the streets like a hobo. The purpose of me doing hair is because i love doing it and if i could i would do it all of the time. I also can do my kids hair and make them look cute special ications and school. My schedule flexibility is all the hours i can get the more money the better. My challenge is to try to be the best around and get as many customers as we can get. I feel very appreciated because everyone says i'm good at it and should go to school for it. Yes i'm going to love being at my job. That's the good thing i will actually wanna get up and go to work. There's really nothing else i wanna do. I love doing hair and that's it. The investments that i'm willing to make that will help me get my dream job is getting good grades and coming to school as much as possible. I mean i never looked into what company i want to work for but i kinda want to go to business school to so i can own my own hair company. I don't really know if i am because i never looked into it so i can't say say but i can't say no i have to look into that to.

  9. My dream job when I first started to think of it was to become a cop. But now that I think of it I want to join the airforce, and become a pilot. But before that i want to go to college in california and learn how to animate and learn digital art. I would then like to enroll in the air force as a pilot. I would like to do 8 years at the most and if not 8 I would just do 4 years. Once i'm done with that i would like to possibly go back to college. And maybe take just one semester to remember a lot of what I learned when i was last there. After the airforce I would like to either make cartoons like or, design the art for video games or cgi. Something along those lines. But if I don't ever follow through with the whole, graphic design plan then I would just continue to work for the airforce and then possibly retire straight out of the Air Force. Like a couple of years ago i actually wanted to become an architect for either office buildings or homes or really anything. I thought the idea of being able to design your own buildings or just be able to make designs for people, for like where they live,or where they work. The idea of it was pretty cool. But I honestly don't have any other plan for college or jobs. But my dream Job would have to be game designer going around places and mapping them out and drawing them and then coding them for the graphic designer to bring it to life. I would like to work at Ubisoft, Rockstar or EA. Those are the like only companies i buy games from. But that takes a lot of work to do and schooling and I would need a lot of schooling because that stuff doesn't make sense to me. Coding seems so confusing.

  10. Although I don't have a dream job yet, I’d say that the closest thing to my dream job would be a strategist manager. They make partnerships with other companies, planners, adjust company plans for buildings, they launch new ideas, and profit driving initiatives. They do get an average salary depending on what they do, the average amount they can make in a salary ranges, but sticks around one-hundred and thirty thousand dollars. I am not aware if my job is very flexible, but I do know that it is a well paying job, and can have a challenging learning course for years ahead. Getting the job will be a difficult task as it’ll take me years to understand the mechanics of how it’ll work. I must understand math, science, along with other subject in order to perform a job well done. I’m willing to learn more of how to get the job or others related to it, and I’d like to attempt my all in order to achieve such a job as my future depends on it.
However, I'm not sure what company I’d be working for I’ll have to do some research in advance to educate myself even more on who is hiring and who is willing to enlist someone new to the job. Besides that I am not shocked or surprised at all by the results or the surveys as it would be obvious that people would want a flexible job so they can maneuver outside their work time to be with family or to have a second job, etcetera. It can also be because like they said in the article they can hop from job to job very often, even if the company they already work for gives that sense of purpose.
