Student Question | What’s Your Dream Job?
By MICHAEL GONCHAR  MARCH 10, 2016 5:00 AM March 10, 2016 5:00 am

What do you want to be when you grow up? Has your dream job changed as you’ve gotten older? Have you already started investing time and effort to try to make it happen?

In “The New Dream Jobs,” Jenna Wortham writes:

When the National Society of High School Scholars asked 18,000 Americans, ages 15 to 29, to rank their ideal future employers, the results were curious. To nobody’s surprise, Google, Apple and Facebook appeared high on the list, but so did the Central Intelligence Agency, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the National Security Agency. The Build-A-Bear Workshop was No. 50, just a few spots behind Lockheed Martin and JPMorgan Chase. (The New York Times came in at No. 16.)

However scattershot, the survey offers a glimpse into the ambitions of the millennial generation, which already makes up more than a third of the work force. By 2020, it will make up half. Survey after survey shows that millennials want to work for companies that place a premium on employee welfare, offer flexible scheduling and, above all, bestow a sense of purpose. These priorities are well known and frequently mocked, providing grist for the oft-repeated claim that millennials are lazy, entitled job-hoppers.

But it’s important to remember that this generation was shaped by a recession, an unprecedented crush of student debt and a broad decline in the credibility of all kinds of institutions. Stability is an abstract concept to these young workers, so they instead tend to focus on creating a rich, textured life now, rather than planning for a future obscured by uncertainty.

Students: Read the entire article, then answer the questions below:
— What’s your dream job? Why do you want that job? Do you think you’re well suited for it?

— What qualities are most important to you in your future career? Salary? A sense of purpose? Scheduling flexibility? Feeling challenged? Feeling appreciated? The ability to get ahead? Liking what you do or being good at your job? Anything else?

— What investments are you willing to make now to help you get your dream job eventually?

— What companies would you want to work for? Are you surprised by the National Society of High School Scholars survey rankings? Why?

  1. My dream job is to be a photographer because absolutely i am intrigued and i find taking pictures to be quite amazing it really can open your mind to many different ideas. I think i'm well suited for the job because my hands are still and i can focus the lense easily.I want this job just because of the fact that i love to see all new vibrant colors and i just find everything that comes with photography is very fun to me! It is just all so great!

What is most important to me? just to know that i know i'm doing something that someone else could enjoy along with me. Think about it when you hang up a picture or set a wallpaper or anything along those lines its something you enjoy. If you go out somewhere nice and you start to admire the view i want to be able to capture the image so you can hold on to it. I’d also like that my schedule would probably be flexible because you know as you get older life starts to get harder for you! And things change some things you dont remember from school you know so say your doing a job like this you will have to keep up with technology. Also, you can when you decide your going to make a family one day you know you’re may like photography bc you dont always have to be taking photos!

The investments i doing are i'm practicing after i'm done with taking the necessary courses you have to take to pass high school i'm taking the photography. I also just snap some photos anytime i see a nice view, or sometimes you get those people who ask to take a picture of them i will do my best to make sure it came out good. And if it needs some photoshop ill edit it put a nice border around it maybe a filter if they want it possibilities are endless with photos and pictures because there is always something beautiful to capture!

I honestly don't know who id work for i might just work for myself, i dont know i am not quite sure what i am going to do yet. I may branch out do some photography for magazines and people then so i build a name for myself and then i will do my own thing, and build myself up you know that would be cool but depending on what i do. Since, i could definitely go in to photoshop which i love it is amazing making logos for companies and stuff that would be cool!

In the future, my dream job is to become a Model. I want to become a model because I want to be able to express my flaws and do what I love. I think I'm well suited for modeling because a lot of people give me compliments about my legs and say that I have the body for it. a dream applicant whose impressive experience is, confidence, body language, and ability to interview will makes them look good. They make your job easy because you want to, as they say in the fashion world, “book” them on the spot. The most important qualities of Modeling is, "Confidence." A professional know their angles and know how to use them by putting their best assets forward. The challenges for me would be to look at the crowd or speaking in front of a large group of people. "Portfolio," a potential client, has the opportunity for the candidate to walk you through their work and for you to size up their presentation skills. If they’re effective at making their work shine, you know you’ve got a confident applicant in your midst. "Final thoughts," You’ll also be enhancing and developing your own signature style of interviewing, And that’s something that never goes out of fashion. The investment that I'm willing to make to get into modeling is to be outstanding and have confidence as always. I don't know what company I would work for but I would definitely sign a contract with a company that pays well. I am surprised by the National Society of High School Scholarship survey rankings because it gives a lot of children the opportunity to get into college faster and to become what they wishes for.

  3. I am one of does people that are undecided about what they are going to do when they grow up. I feel it will come by it self. When I was ten I am want to be a chef because I felt that was so amazing. Then when I was growing up many things come up to be. I was like I want to be this or I want to be that. Then I want to be a doctor or a nurse but I felt that was too much. Since they don not stop studying because I am going to say each second a new sickness or medicine is discovered. Now when a person said your go on business like selling house that gives lots of money. I was like I do not know about that. One time that person and I were talking about a teacher that the person likes. That person said oh she is a flyer attendant they get money and you get to go places. That also they give you a great discount whatever place you go. Now that got into my mind because my dream is to travel the world. I see myself traveling seen lots paradise that this place called earth have for us to explore.

    1. I think whenever You're off to college or when you're near to go to college. You'll know what you want your dream job to be. At our tender age. We're very confused about our future but when the time comes. You'll know.

    2. Don't worry about it. A lot of people change their minds as they get older about their dream jobs. Interest can change. I think that you will find something you like as you get older and have new experiences.

  4. Most people find out what their dream job is when they’re younger. I don’t really know what dream Job I want to have in the future of my life. But I hope I work with people that I like to be around with. I want something that would put me under pressure. While thinking about it right now I think that I would want to be a doctor because I get to save a person’s life. I think that saving someone’s life is one of the most important things in the world. Also I am help them to relieve their pain and suffering. In my family some people that I love are hurting right now and it sometimes hurts me that I can’t do something about it. Seeing people in pain and suffering makes me feel depressed because they’re going through so much that I can’t do anything to make them feel better. In my lifetime i had been in the hospital about 10 times and 8 out of 10 is been visiting family. It has been always sad when doing it. I don’t think I am well suited for it yet bust I am going to get their in the future. The quantities that are important in my future career is to be responsible about everything and be the best. Also feeling that you changed someone’s life for the better. The investments I am willing to do right now is just to do my best in school right now , so hopefully I go to a great college and work my way up in the system. I don't know what companies I would work for being a doctor yet. Also I am not really surprised by the school survey because everyone in my generation really wants a really nice way of living and a short amount of time working. I mean who doesn't want to work for really large companies but in the end not everything turns out like you want it to.

    1. I agree with you because many kids does not know what kind of job they want to do. Many kids wants to focus on studying before thinking about their future jobs. It is tough figuring out what you want to be because there's so many jobs that offer you better opportunity. Someday people would know what kind of jobs they want to get.

  5. My dream job has changed over the years. When I was younger a wanted to join the military. As I got older my dream job changed to being on the police force. I thought that was my final choice until recently when someone talked about doing air conditioning. So as you see some people might know their dream job right away and for other people they might change their minds a few times. I think I might be well suited for the job because I like to do things with my hands and your own speed. There is a demand for trade work that people sometimes overlook. Air conditioning jobs will always be around. You don't work at the same place everyday for the rest of your life. You go to job sites in different areas. Not one day is the same. I am going to try to do better in school so I can graduate. This way I can go to a vocational school that teaches and trains in air conditioning. I am not sure what company I would work for or create my own business. I like to get through one hurdle at a time. I am not really surprised by the National Society's survey. Social networking is popular right now. Younger people want to work less put still get paid. I think the downfall is that with all these people interested in these jobs, the harder it will be to find a job in that field.

  6. My dream job is to become an engineer. I want this job because I like to work with technologies and make them work. I think I’m well suited for it because I’m pretty good with technologies and I’m also creative. Some of the qualities that are most important to me in my future career is creativity and hard worker. I would like to work for a company that offer higher salary and offer any schedule.
I know that my job will be challenging because being an engineer requires me to work with a lot of numbers and I’m not really great with numbers. People appreciate me more when I do my best with the work I have done and I get credits from it. I do have the ability to get ahead when I try my best. I think that I would like my job because it’s my dream job and it’s something I want to do. Some of the investments I’m willing to take would be getting a degree and getting a mentor.
Getting a degree would be a good investment because it will help me find a job. I would need a mentor for my dream job because I need someone to tell me of what’s right or what’s wrong. I would want to work for big companies like Apple or Google and more because the offer better salaries and better opportunities. I wasn’t really surprise on the National Society of High School Scholars survey rankings because many people would want to work for big companies.

    1. Iain I really think you can make your dreams come true if you really push yourself. Also I didn’t know you wanted to become an engineer. I know that become one is really hard and you said it yourself that you becoming one will really be hard ,but if you believe in yourself and picture yourself as one then you will maybe become one.

  7. — What’s your dream job? Why do you want that job? Do you think you’re well suited for it?
My dream job would be to play professional soccer, i want this job because i've played soccer almost my entire life and i love the sport, i put all my time and efforts into this sport so why else would i want it. As of right now i do not think i am well suited,i think little things in my game need to improve and also playing consistent. Another dream job if that doesn't work would be a photographer, just taking pictures for a living would be so much fun because you just have the freedom to do whatever and make money off what you and others think look good. Right now im learning what all the modes and functions on a camera do so im not suited for that job at the moment but in time i will be, hopefully

    — What qualities are most important to you in your future career? Salary? A sense of purpose? Scheduling flexibility? Feeling challenged? Feeling appreciated? The ability to get ahead? Liking what you do or being good at your job? Anything else?
The qualities that are most important to my future career is me enjoying my job like say if im making $480 a week at a job i hate but then making $450 a week at a job i enjoy, im gonna go with the job i enjoy. Also if i were to become a pro soccer player i would have to put all my time into it everyday, like working on my own even when there is no team practice.

    — What investments are you willing to make now to help you get your dream job eventually?
My investments im making now doesn't always involve money, like playing soccer out of school is to get better that cost some but my “investments” are me putting in the time to get better, show up to practice and train to get better and want to get better.

    — What companies would you want to work for? Are you surprised by the National Society of High School Scholars survey rankings? Why?
No im not surprised by the rankings, personally i would 100% love to work for google or microsoft because those jobs seem like so much fun and just knowing you have all that power is cool. I agree with the rankings 110%.

  8. My dream job is to be a Politician. I see how people take the politics and get confused or dont care about it. Politics can help you understand how the country is ran. People who want to be in Government should also want to be in politics. I want to be a politician so that i can show people what really goes on in the country. The news maybe right about physical things in the country, but they dont capture the budget or anything around politics. The news say things about the presidential campaign. They dont comprehend the full reason for what they are saying. I dont know much about politics now. They have classes to help with it. I know people who have gone to different countries to help out kids get an education just because of politics.
Being able to staying up with the world issues maybe a quality to have for it. They use national issues to get votes. Lying is a good quality to have too. They must lie about things said about them on social media. Trump had lies about him on social media and he is the President now. I wouldnt care what my salary is. Money doesnt make things happen, people do. Scheduling would be a problem. I would want to work from home unless im needed. If that couldnt happen i would make in every otherday.
I would invest my time into finding a way to drop taxes in the state. Getting that dropped will make the people in the state happy. If people get what they want they will keep on voting for me. That means they get more of what they want. If i was the governor of New Jersey i would get rid of all the tolls on the parkway. They arnt need at all. People already have to pay 2.94 for 9/10 of a gallon of gas to get to work, why make them pay more.

  9. — What’s your dream job? Why do you want that job? Do you think you’re well suited for it? My dream is to be a Marine Biologist i want this job because i have been fascinated with Marine life since i was a toddler. I would choose to go to the aquarium instead of a zoo watch movies about marine life example: Finding nemo. Yes i think i am very prepared for this job i probably know more stuff about marine life then 3 average men put together.

    — What qualities are most important to you in your future career? Salary? A sense of purpose? Scheduling flexibility? Feeling challenged? Feeling appreciated? The ability to get ahead? 11. My dream job is to a music teacher because music has been my life since I was little.I believe i’m well suited for it because if i became a music teacher i’m still pursuing my dream to sing and also i'm working with children which is my second favorite thing. The qualities that are most important to me in my future career is being outgoing, patience, great teaching skills, respect, and enthusiasm. The salary for a music teacher is about $65,340 per year which is good and the scheduling for being a teacher is good because I would only work 5 days a week for 7-8 hours. I wanna feel challenged with this job so I could get better at the way i’m teaching and challenge the kids with different techniques and etc. I’ll be feeling appreciative with the ability to get ahead and like what i’m doing because singing and music is my life and helping other people out is my favorite thing too. The investments that i’ll do to pursue my dream is getting good grades, going to college and starting out as a student teacher and then going ahead from there. I’m not sure what company i would want to work for yet because i’m still figuring that out. I’m not really surprised by the survey because lots of people have a dream job and will follow it.

  12. My dream job is to be a chef. I always thought that it would be cool to cook for people, like family or friends. Even to an extent of owning my own restaurant. Cooking is something that I was always interested in because when I was growing up my parents would always cook for me and other family members and I thought that it was cool. So I have started making meals for me and my family. There is a good chance that I will go forward with this choice but there is many other options that i might want to do sometime in the future. Also it's cool because there is many different things you can make, between breakfast, lunch, dinner, and dessert. That is the main reason why I have chosen to do this.
