Student Question | What’s Your Dream Job?
By MICHAEL GONCHAR  MARCH 10, 2016 5:00 AM March 10, 2016 5:00 am

What do you want to be when you grow up? Has your dream job changed as you’ve gotten older? Have you already started investing time and effort to try to make it happen?

In “The New Dream Jobs,” Jenna Wortham writes:

When the National Society of High School Scholars asked 18,000 Americans, ages 15 to 29, to rank their ideal future employers, the results were curious. To nobody’s surprise, Google, Apple and Facebook appeared high on the list, but so did the Central Intelligence Agency, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the National Security Agency. The Build-A-Bear Workshop was No. 50, just a few spots behind Lockheed Martin and JPMorgan Chase. (The New York Times came in at No. 16.)

However scattershot, the survey offers a glimpse into the ambitions of the millennial generation, which already makes up more than a third of the work force. By 2020, it will make up half. Survey after survey shows that millennials want to work for companies that place a premium on employee welfare, offer flexible scheduling and, above all, bestow a sense of purpose. These priorities are well known and frequently mocked, providing grist for the oft-repeated claim that millennials are lazy, entitled job-hoppers.

But it’s important to remember that this generation was shaped by a recession, an unprecedented crush of student debt and a broad decline in the credibility of all kinds of institutions. Stability is an abstract concept to these young workers, so they instead tend to focus on creating a rich, textured life now, rather than planning for a future obscured by uncertainty.

Students: Read the entire article, then answer the questions below:
— What’s your dream job? Why do you want that job? Do you think you’re well suited for it?

— What qualities are most important to you in your future career? Salary? A sense of purpose? Scheduling flexibility? Feeling challenged? Feeling appreciated? The ability to get ahead? Liking what you do or being good at your job? Anything else?

— What investments are you willing to make now to help you get your dream job eventually?

— What companies would you want to work for? Are you surprised by the National Society of High School Scholars survey rankings? Why?

  1. Since i was very young, I have always wanted to be a auto mechanic or at least work on cars for a living. I've always loved cars. There was something about engines that calms me down. I have bought my own car and started working on it and now looking for a job at Mitas body shop. The most important thing about working on cars if something goes wrong on your car, You would have the knowledge to fix it for free.

  2. My dream job would have to be going to the MLB, but we all know that's not gonna happen. I would want to work in the sheriff's department. My uncle works as a lawyer and he taught be a lot about the laws and stuff and he got me interested in working for the law. I've been researching alot about it lately and i'm really interested in it and i feel like i would fit in well with it. I have no record, my record is clean and i've never been in trouble with the law. I get good grades and i really like the whole sheriffs thing.

The quality that i think are most important is if you like the job. I'm interested in the sheriff's stuff and i feel like i would fit in just great. I'm not worried about the money i make. I'm worried about making the laws right and not worrying about anything else.

I'm willing to do anything in my power to get this job. I've been wanting this job for a while and if i ever get it i'll feel like 1 Million bucks. I've been so interested in the sheriffs field and when i get this job i won't doubt anyone. Soon i'll be the chief and everything. Ill be sure i'm on time and be sure to catch anyone who's breaking the laws and take them in and make this world better with no drama.

I would wanna go work for monmouth county sheriff's department because i heard there working field is amazing and it's close to by. I would do anything that i could to get this job and make everyone proud. I feel like that if i got this job i could prove everyone wrong and everyone who doubted me will see that i'm serious about my future and that i'm willing to change from who i am now into the man no one will ever think i could be.

    2. I like th3e first dream that you had. I have the same exact dream to be in the MLB. Don't not have self confidence in yourself. Just practice a lot. You never know what could happen. You could be the one picked to make it. Don't ever not have faith in yourself.

  3. My dream job is to work with animals and become a marine biologist. I love animals i love taking care of them. i chose this as my dream job because land and sea animals are my favorite and i will love be be with all different types of animals and taking care of them. Also i have another dream job my other dream job is to go to cometology for beauty. I love doing hair and makeup but i mainly wanna do makeup. I wanna open up my own shop with my best friend Kelsey and do makeup on other people. I just always loved doing makeup on me and other people.
My dream job has changed but only the makeup one because when i was little i always wanted to be marien Biologist but last year i started thinking about the makeup and i am in love doing it and believe that i will open a store one day.
I have been trying do make my dream job happen because everyday i work i save my money and keep it in a safe for the future for my makeup store. I will keep trying to make my dream jobs happen and make my own products in more store and make cures for the animals. What is your dream job? Is yours the same or almost the same as mine?

  4. My dream job when I grow up is to be a professional basketball player. But I know it's not easy. I have to work hard everyday if I want to get to the NBA. Yes I have started investing time in my dream job and I work on it everyday. In order to get where I need to go I need to get good grades and practice to get better at basketball. Without good grades I can't get anywhere. So I know school comes first then basketball. I know is somebody else in the world working as hard as me or even harder to achieve their goals just like me in life. College comes before the NBA and I have to play at a high level and perform so colleges can look at me and maybe even offer me a scholarship. Without good grades I'm won't be anything colleges don't come to see people with bad grades they go to the next person with good grades that why I know and understand I have to do good in all my classes. I don't want to be one of those great basketball player with bad grades because I would be a waste of talent and I don't want to be that. I seen plenty of examples of people like that. They could have potentially been the best player in the world but we would never know because they couldn't maintain good grades. No my dream job hasn't changed at all as I have gotten older. I know it's hard to make it to the NBA but I know what it takes and I have great family to lead me through it all the way. They help me get better everyday on something weather is homework or basketball they are right there to help me. Hopefully I make it to the NBA but if I don't I would want to be a tv commentator and talk about sports because I know a lot about that type of stuff and can talk about it all day long.

    1. I can totally see you as a basketball player. When I was young I also had that fantasy of playing professional sports. I even played a little basketball. As you brought up Marvin grades are very important to maintain when going out for a sport. If you were a sports commentator for a company like ESPN that would be really cool, I love watching and listening to that type of stuff as well. I think this is totally possible if you put in the work, and I hope you reach your dreams.

  5. When I was young I thought about the question of what I would like to do for my dream job. I’ve always wanted to be a fireman because my father was a firemen for the city of Linden in New Jersey. My Grandpa was also a fireman and his father was a fireman so you can tell that it has been in the family for a little bit. I want this job because I would like to help other people that are in need. Right now I don’t think I have the physical capability to do the job right now, but I think after high school I will try and get that strength.
The qualities that are most important to me for this career is having a sense of purpose. I feel like I would be doing so much good if I were to pursue this. Money is also something that is concerning but I feel like I can make it work. Also feeling good about the job because I’ve heard this job is very taxing on the mind. There are stories of people seeing stuff and quitting over it. Finally being appreciated is also very nice.
I would like to do well in school and maybe take a class during my high school career to benefit my chances. Also taking a course outside of school about firefighting would also be a very smart move to make. I’m willing to make any investment that will better my chances of seeing my dream come true.
I’m really only interested in working for the Toms River Fire Department. I would like to stay in this area rather travel somewhere and commute back and forth. In my opinion I am not surprised in the rankings. I am not surprised because in this day and age social media has a big influence in our culture. Most people have a social media account on at least one of the platforms that were listed. I would like to think that I am not that consumed by the presence of it.

  6. I liked Zach’s dream job because I think it is a great job because he would want to save other people's lives. He would risk his life for other and a lot of people wouldn't do that knowing that they have a chance of losing their live. I also agreed with him when he said he will do well in school to benefit their career to give him a better chance at what you want to do it live.

  7. When i grow up i would like to be a cosmetologist. I like this job because it has to do with a lot of thing i'm interested in doing and to me there very occupying to my time. And that has to do with the job quality like how much i might enjoy this job even thought i could be something else and earn more but not like it as much as cosmetology but last week taught me life isn't always fair so it's either the need of money or my own needs of liking my future job. I really think i'm going to be a workaholic when i grow up tho so i might have to balance two jobs cosmetology being a part time job. And to be able to work my dream job i'm going to have to be very serious in learning even more about this profession in doing the job professionally.

  8. When i get older i want to be a police officer. Ever since i was little i have wanted to be a cop. I has always been my dream. I know many police officers and talk to them all the time about their job and how fun it is. Most tell me that they had fun at the beginning of their career but now it is old. I have been saving money and doing security. I am slowly preparing myself for situations and how to control people. I would like to go to the police academy right after high school and get a degree in criminal justice. I would like to go to John Jay University in New York. After going to OCC. I want to become a police officer in Berkeley Township of Lakewood. I would like to work in Berkeley because i grew up here and i know almost all the police officers that work here. If i were to work in Lakewood my job would be a higher paying salary but only because the risks are higher. You have to watch your back everywhere and in Berkeley all you really do is traffic duty, Go to calls for overdoses and pull people over for DWI. I think that i would fit in as a police officer because i am very good at controlling situations and can talk almost anyone down. It would also be good because i do security and it gives me practice dealing with drunk or crazy people. I understand that many people hate cops. The only people that like cops are people that are friends with cops or family or people that don't get into trouble by them. I would spend 30 thousand dollars to become a police officer. I can't wait to go to the academy senior year.

  9. I have a dream job that I hope to make it to one day. My dream job is MLB( Major League Baseball). I practice everyday to accomplish my dream job It is not only my dream job, it is also my dream. I want this job because I love baseball and it is my favorite sport. I think I am well suited for the job. I practice everyday and when I am bored inside, I come right outside to practice even more. It is fun. Everyday, I do not go 5 minutes without a bat and ball in my hands when I get home from school. When I am in school, I always wish to get home quick just so I could go play baseball. Most people would think, “how is baseball fun, all you do is hit a ball with a piece of wood.” There is a lot more to it though. Once you get use to it, you can not get rid of it. It is so fun for me. The qualities that are the best for me is, of course, playing on a good field. Some fields have no love shown, and have grass growing in the dirt or even grass half way up your leg. Also, another quality is best for me is the bat. You need to have a tough bat, because in the MLB, an average fastball is 94 Miles Per Hour. If, you don't have a tough bat, it can easily break and the ball will not go far. If I were to play in the MLB, I would not do it for salary. I would be playing there because I love the game. People should not a play the sport they love just for money. Also, they play games almost everyday. That is another reason why you do not play just for money. If you did not like the sport, you would not be playing it on a daily basis. The investments that I am willing to make is to keep practicing everyday, even in the freezing cold.

  10. My dream job is to become a cosmetologist i have wanted to be one since i was a kid . I want to be a cosmetologist because i have always loved doing hair, makeup and nails. It's something do all the time and i think i would be really good at that job because i have been set on this for a while and i it's something i love doing. I want to go to vocational school for it and then college and i want to get my business degree and open up my own salon. I want to spend all day working at a salon. I want to be challenged to my best ability. But when i first get my degree i would like to work a ultra beauty or a nice salon like that. I'm willing to do anything now to become a cosmetologist. No i'm not surprised by the national society of high schools because they're right.

  11. My dream job is to go into college football and then become a professional football player. I want that job because I already play football as my first year and I am really enjoying it so far. I don't think i'm well suited for it considering it's only my first year playing, but maybe when i get to college I might be just good enough. Everyday i'm getting better and better but for now i just have to keep practicing everyday.

The qualities that are most important to me is being challenged and feeling challenged. A salary isn't really my prize possession if i do get to that stage because i just want to have fun. A sense of purpose to because it is something that I am determined to do and to achieve, and i wont give up. I don't really mind if i am or not getting appreciated because if i am giving it my best shot i'm doing good. I don't really have any more qualities.

The investments i'm willing to make now are just to focus on school and do football throughout high school. If i follow doing that i will eventually get to where i want.
