What Has Been Your Most Memorable Thanksgiving?

Do you celebrate Thanksgiving? How do you celebrate and with whom? Do you like this holiday?
So many of us come together to celebrate Thanksgiving, but the holiday means something different to everyone. We asked for a snapshot of your Thanksgiving — a story or a tradition or a dish that helps define your holiday, and hundreds of you responded. You shared funny stories, about the turkeys that were too big for your ovens. You shared tragic memories, about experiencing unbelievable heartache on a day that is supposed to bring people together. And you shared tales about overcoming hardship to create a memorable meal. Here are your stories; together, they help tell the story of the holiday itself.
These responses have been edited for length and clarity.
‘My mother couldn’t stand the idea of anyone eating pizza for Thanksgiving’
About 45 years ago, my mother made a last-minute run to the grocery store. There was a pizza parlor next to the store, and she watched as three Marines entered. My mother couldn’t stand the idea of anyone eating pizza for Thanksgiving dinner, so she dragged them home. She cooked enough for a small army every night anyway, so three more hearty appetites wouldn’t make a dent. These three young men spent the day with our family, played board games, watched football and shared our Thanksgiving dinner. They even helped with the dishes. I think they were the most polite people my parents ever had over. — Sandy Stinson, Santa Barbara, Calif.
‘The shelter didn’t have an oven’
I was homeless and living on New York City streets, in foster homes and homeless shelters. One Thanksgiving, I received a donated turkey — a thoughtful, generous gift, for which I was grateful. My shelter, however, didn’t have an oven where I could roast my dinner. Ultimately, I cut meat off the turkey bones, boiling it in a small pot on a hot plate — my only cooking appliance. The generosity of the donated turkey was tempered by the indignity I felt as a hungry person, scrambling to find any possible way to prepare my Thanksgiving meal. — Debra Vizzi, Hillside, N.J.
‘A possum. In the pie.’
When I arrived at my parents’ home a few hours before dinner, the pie I baked was still very warm. The refrigerator was already packed and bursting with food. It was a particularly chilly Thanksgiving that year, cold enough that I thought I’d just set the pie out on the back porch to chill until dessert time. The curtains had been drawn all evening, and when I parted them to open the sliding door and retrieve the pie I saw — to my horror — a small possum with its face buried in my perfectly cooked, beautifully seasoned pumpkin pie. I SCREAMED. It froze. My brother came rushing over (probably suspecting I’d actually dropped the pie) and witnessed the same scene. A possum. In the pie. — Sonja Groset, Lake Forest Park, Wash.

  1. I liked the story about the marines the most because It shows the good in people. I celebrate Thanksgiving because I love being with my family. I like how the holiday brings us all closer . The holiday to me means that you're taking a day and spending it with the people that made the past year for you basically good. I celebrate it to tell the people im closest to that im thankful there here. My most memorable thanks giving was in 2015 because my whole family was over and it was just a good day.

  2. My favorite story from the article would probably be ‘My mother couldn’t stand the idea of anyone eating pizza for Thanksgiving’ because it’s sort of relatable, and the fact that the people in the story were said to have helped with the dishes and stuff brings hope into humanity, and let’s people know that there are still some good people out there, stranger or not.
I celebrate Thanksgiving every year, the basic turkey, potatoes, corn, broccoli with cheese, carrots, ect. The holiday means being thankful for what you have, and remembering the good memories, forgetting all the troubles. It’s not called Thanksgiving to be sour towards everyone, but to be thankful. This year my family had our nice uncle come over and celebrate with us. I was wearing my Pikachu onesie and I walked out of my room to get some cookies and he asked what I was, I replied with “Pikachu! Pika!” trying to imitate Pikachu’s voice.
I forgot how old I was, or what year it was, but one day my little sister’s birthday was on Thanksgiving, so we had cake and stuff on that day. This day was a little crazy if I remembered correctly, as we had to buy a cake that day. I think we got an icecream cake because she used to love that kind of cake when she was little.

  3. My favorite story is “My mother couldn't stand the idea of anyone eating pizza on thanksgiving.” That was my favorite story because she helped people that might of been in need. She helped three marines that might not have a family to have thanksgiving with. I know that because just the three of them were walking into a pizza place. She invited them to have thanksgiving with them. They had a good time and they even helped her clean up. The lady said they were the nicest people she ever met. That is why that story is my favorite.
Thanksgiving is a national holiday celebrated at different places of the world. It's a holiday for what you're thankful for. You have a huge meal and get to spend time with family. The most common thing you have is turkey. You also say what you're thankful for. Thanksgiving to me is a huge meal with family. We usually have turkey but some people around the world have ham. And some places don't celebrate thanksgiving.
My favorite thanksgiving was four years ago. It was by far my favorite. It was a very warm that day. We went to my aunt's house. I went outside and played football with my cousins. Then we got an RC car. We made a ramp on the deck. And then we went full speed and ramped it, and it landed right on the nose and it broke. After that it was about 1:00 so we went inside and watched some football. It was the Packers Vs. the Lions and the packers one. So then it was 4:00 and we went back outside and some more football. And I beat my cousin by a touchdown on the last play of the game. I won by a score of 56-49. After that we went inside and ate dinner. We had a huge dinner with turkey, stuffing, corn, mashed potatoes etc.We left around 6:00 and got home around 7:15. By far this was my favorite thanksgiving.

  5. My favorite story was ‘My mother couldn’t stand the idea of anyone eating pizza for Thanksgiving’ because it was a nice thing to invite someone to her house for Thanksgiving dinner who probably doesn’t have enough money to buy food or turkey. I celebrate Thanksgiving because I am grateful of the things and people I love. My most memorable Thanksgiving was when all my family were together for thanksgiving dinner at my aunt’s house in New York.

    1. I agree with Ana because from “My Mother Couldn’t Stand The Idea Of Anyone Eating Pizza For Thanksgiving” it was a nice thing to invite someone over for thanksgiving if they had no where to go. I also agree with her on why she celebrates Thanksgiving her reasons is she is thankful for everything. And that must of been a fun thanksgiving in New York. If it was in the city you get to see the skyline at night while eating thanksgiving dinner.

  7. My favorite story is” My mother couldn’t stand the idea of anyone eating pizza for Thanksgiving’” it’s ironic because turkey was not what the first thanksgiving consisted of it was venison because alough people eat this bird for thanksgiving. Edward winslow never wrote about a turkey being eaten at this occasion. But i like this story because it just reminds me of christmas where everybody is together and we have family over and some friends and everybody is everywhere unless we get invited to someone else home that isn’t in our family
I don’t necessarily celebrate because it's mostly another night with another dinner eating the same right amount as normal it's mostly for my the parents and their social media aesthetics which has to be put everywhere which can be annoying.
My most memorable thanksgiving was this year because it was an actual thanksgiving turkey this time and at someone else's home but my favorite was the “pernil”which is spanish for pork i'm not sure what part but that's my favorite and it was memorable because i had a dispute with my cousins friend in new york that night and this twelve year old said she was going to smack me because she was mad that i said that she shouldn't be twerking in front of family like first of all your twelve be respectful and try to set a good image for yourself.and in the end her annoying self got blocked and it was all just funny to me and i love laughing so that was great.

  8. Thanksgiving comes around every year. I look forward to it so much. There is always so much food spread out on the beautiful table. But sometimes thanksgiving can be boring. This thanksgiving was so much fun. There was so many people there and family. I love that I get to see my family on thanksgiving because I don't have much family and it's nice to see them. Plus they always give me cards with money in them and I like money so that's a good thing too. After everyone came in and settled down I played with my cousins zoey and ryland. They're little balls of energy and they climb all over me and pull my hair but I'm used to it so it doesn't bother me anymore. My aunt Laura had fun things set up for us and the family. We went outside but honestly it wasn't even that cold out. So she pulls out these huge sacks so that everyone can have a sack race. So many people fell and it was so funny. Then my mom and the kids went to the corner and rakes all the leaves into a big pile and the kids were jumping all around in it and it kinda got annoying but whatever. Then the food was ready and everyone got so excited for the food. Everyone had there plates filled to every corner of the plate. I was so full and so was everyone else so my aunt have this big movie room and we all went in there switching back and forth from the football game to the maceys paraide. Nobody could move after that but the kids were still jumping all over. Then we all ate desert but I couldn't even fit it so I just had a little piece of pumpkin pie cause I LOVE THAT. Then on our way home my mom dropped me of at Emilee and Allisons and we watched movies and spent thanksgiving night with my best friends. This thanksgiving was my most memorable thanksgiving.

  9. 0. Do I celebrate thanksgiving. Ugh.. yeah sometimes being the fact that it’s an American holiday and me and my family live in America it’s hard not to participate in American Holliday’s. I know your probably wondering why I said that^ but my family is Jamaican . And in Jamaica thanksgiving is NOT a holiday so some of my family doesn’t celebrate it because it’s a made up day just like any other holidays they come up with. But who can pass on thanksgiving? It’s a day to enjoy yourself and just eat all you can.
    0. How do I celebrate thanksgiving? I celebrate thanksgiving but just simply cooking a nice meal with my family. Playing some nice reggae music. And just cooking all the food we enjoy and love to eat. “Well not all” but food that we enjoy eating because it would be way too much to cook all the food we love! Lol‍♀️but anyways that’s pretty much how I celebrate my thanksgiving nothing really special just vibing with the fam.
    0. Who do I celebrate thanksgiving with. My mom step dad, Grandma siblings, and my cousin. So family.
    0. Do I like this holiday? Sure only simply because it’s a day to eat food “ At least in my eyes”
    0. “The shelter didn’t have an oven” was my favorite article because it made me realize you have to be grateful for what you have no Mather what your ups n downs maybe . Because theirs people in this world who has it way worst or struggling n wish they could put their foot inside of your shoes.
    0. I celebrate thanksgiving for the food because I love to eat.
    0. My most memorable thanksgiving was last year 2016 when we had family and friends over because it was just a great time and so much fun.

  10. Yes I do celebrate thanksgiving. Every year sadly, I either go up to my aunts or grandmas for thanksgiving. I rather go up to my grandma, because she lives up north and i don't see her that much or any of my family members that live up north. So i enjoy going up. I don't really like the food that much and so i don't eat. But i enjoy watching football especially casue the giants played this year they still lost but i was happy to see them play. I usually celebrate with my grandma, my great aunt, then my other aunt then just cousins and my mom and brother. After i left there came back to my dads were i proceeded to play Call Of Duty in which i stormed the beach on operation neptune and killed some germans. My favorite story would have to be when the guy puts his pie outside and the possum comes up and eats the pie. Because they couldn't eat it so that funny and when he said he screamed i bet it was like a little girl . I celebrate it because, actually I don't know why i do i don't really enjoy it. It just seems like a pointless holiday to me to celebrate. I mean I like seeing my family and all that bu other then that i don't really care for the holiday that much . My most memorable moment would have to be when the turkey almost caught on fire i mean it like did in away there was some flames on it but we got it to go out very quickly. Or when i got surprised with my first cruise i was going on that year that was pretty cool but i mean every year it's pretty much the same thing i mean there's always joking around and poking fun at each other. But i don't care for thanksgiving really at all.

  11. My favorite story was the one with the possum in the pie. Thi is my favorite story because of the humor and the way it was told. The humor was that the possum was having a feast of his own in the fresh pumpkin pie. My family and I love to celebrate thanksgiving. We love to spend time together and catch up on everything. At thanksgiving dinner there is always the kids table and the adults table. I'm stuck with my three annoying cousins, one grateful sister and myself. I know it does not sound that boring but all we did was play video games because all the grownups were talking about their stuff. Since I was born in Kansas and moved to New Jersey at three years old, I don't get to spend thanksgiving with my family there. Don't get me wrong, I love my family here but it's just i've never experienced a real thanksgiving in Kansas. This year hd to be the best yet though. All though we did not do much it was still fun and memorable. When we got there my tn year old cousin Anthony asked to play WII in his room. We played his favorite game or about one hour or two. He is obsessed with that game. After thirty minutes later my other cousin, Giuliana, wanted t play dolls so i suced it up and watched her play dolls. Then shortly after, the soup was ready. We always have soup first. The funny part is that Anthony and I both eat our soup with forks and everyone was making fun of us for it. I don't like the broth that was used so I like to use forks. After that we went back upstairs. About twenty minutes later the food was finally ready! I ate turkey, mashed potatoes, And green beans. It was delicious. And then we had hot chocolate and it was amazing! In all honesty I have no clue why I loved this year so much but it was just amazing to me. I got to spend time with my cousins.

  12. Yes i celebrate Thanksgiving. Do you? When Thanksgiving comes around i get so excited. We make homemade stuffing and make our homemade pistachio pudding with walnuts for dessert. Every year we go somewhere different to celebrate Thanksgiving. We will either go to my grandma’s house, my aunts, friends, or we will just stay home. When this holiday comes around i’m a happy person and i am so excited to see my family and pig out. I am very thankful for this holiday. The day before the diner we prepare everything like the stuffing and that takes at least takes 6 or 10 hours. It takes that long because we buy like 12 loafs of bread and toast every piece and rip them into little pieces. By the time that is done it’s been like 5 hours and the other couple hours is from actually making it lol. I love doing traditional things on Thanksgiving because that’s what we look forward to do when the day comes back again. The night of Thanksgiving we all clean up the house and sit down and relax with a christmas movie or just have the 80’s on low volume and just talk or play on our phones. But after all the food is settled we get the christmas tree down and we start decorating it. Us kids will decorate the tree while my parents decorate the house. We just place some cute singing or dancing christmas stuffed animals around the house. This and Christmas is such a good holiday because it brings everyone together to hang out and relax with each other. What do you do on this holiday?

  13. The story that i found my favorite was “My mother couldn't stand the idea of anyone eating pizza for thanksgiving”.This was my favorite story because i just love to see just generous people be nice to other people they don't even know.I thought it was very kind that she invite the strangers into her home to eat thanksgiving with her family because she thought that on thanksgiving you should eat the traditional thanksgiving dinner not pizza. They were kind aswell for helping with the dishes and had fun with the kids and made new friends.
I celebrate thanksgiving because my family and I thank god for everything that we have and for a beautiful family. It’s a day we’re most of my family gets together cooks a wonderful dinner and share a lot of laughs and play games and hangout all day without any problems or conflicts.
Normally on a normal thanksgiving day we all go to my aunts house around 12:00 then we chit talk and watch the football games and wait for more people to arrive. Around 4:00 we sit down and eat but before we eat we pray then eat. After eating we just sit there and talk after we talk a little we clean off the table and do the dishes. After that the guys go and watch football while the girls play board games with the smaller children and have fun. After awhile around like 6:40 we eat dessert and talk more and laugh. After we eat dessert we clear off the table and then we all sit and watch a movie then after the movie we all go home. I love thanksgiving because I just love spending time with my family.
