What Has Been Your Most Memorable Thanksgiving?

Do you celebrate Thanksgiving? How do you celebrate and with whom? Do you like this holiday?
So many of us come together to celebrate Thanksgiving, but the holiday means something different to everyone. We asked for a snapshot of your Thanksgiving — a story or a tradition or a dish that helps define your holiday, and hundreds of you responded. You shared funny stories, about the turkeys that were too big for your ovens. You shared tragic memories, about experiencing unbelievable heartache on a day that is supposed to bring people together. And you shared tales about overcoming hardship to create a memorable meal. Here are your stories; together, they help tell the story of the holiday itself.
These responses have been edited for length and clarity.
‘My mother couldn’t stand the idea of anyone eating pizza for Thanksgiving’
About 45 years ago, my mother made a last-minute run to the grocery store. There was a pizza parlor next to the store, and she watched as three Marines entered. My mother couldn’t stand the idea of anyone eating pizza for Thanksgiving dinner, so she dragged them home. She cooked enough for a small army every night anyway, so three more hearty appetites wouldn’t make a dent. These three young men spent the day with our family, played board games, watched football and shared our Thanksgiving dinner. They even helped with the dishes. I think they were the most polite people my parents ever had over. — Sandy Stinson, Santa Barbara, Calif.
‘The shelter didn’t have an oven’
I was homeless and living on New York City streets, in foster homes and homeless shelters. One Thanksgiving, I received a donated turkey — a thoughtful, generous gift, for which I was grateful. My shelter, however, didn’t have an oven where I could roast my dinner. Ultimately, I cut meat off the turkey bones, boiling it in a small pot on a hot plate — my only cooking appliance. The generosity of the donated turkey was tempered by the indignity I felt as a hungry person, scrambling to find any possible way to prepare my Thanksgiving meal. — Debra Vizzi, Hillside, N.J.
‘A possum. In the pie.’
When I arrived at my parents’ home a few hours before dinner, the pie I baked was still very warm. The refrigerator was already packed and bursting with food. It was a particularly chilly Thanksgiving that year, cold enough that I thought I’d just set the pie out on the back porch to chill until dessert time. The curtains had been drawn all evening, and when I parted them to open the sliding door and retrieve the pie I saw — to my horror — a small possum with its face buried in my perfectly cooked, beautifully seasoned pumpkin pie. I SCREAMED. It froze. My brother came rushing over (probably suspecting I’d actually dropped the pie) and witnessed the same scene. A possum. In the pie. — Sonja Groset, Lake Forest Park, Wash.

— Which of the stories was your favorite and why?
— Why do you celebrate Thanksgiving? What does the holiday mean to you?
— Give us a “snapshot” of your Thanksgiving. What has been your most memorable Thanksgiving and why?

  1. Out of all of the Thanksgiving stories I liked the “A possum. In the Pie.”; I just thought it was a cute little short and funny story. Especially since you’d never really expect to see a possum anywhere near your thanksgiving pie.

There are a lot of different reasons to why people celebrate thanksgiving, but the main one is usually to have a nice dinner with your family. Which is exactly the reason I celebrate it. I’m not big on the whole “we stole from and murdered the Native American’s”; but I do like the fact that I get to hang out with my family for a day and eat a bunch of food. I’m not too big on going to huge family parties, especially since there’s a bunch of little kids in my family and I don’t really like little kids. Or large parties- or just large amounts of people in a confined space. But I do like going to small family get togethers (preferably not at my own house) and having a dinner with my aunt and uncle. Or my grandparents. It’s just a really nice thing. Especially since I usually don’t see a lot of my family except on holidays. I usually get to see my grandparents every week or so, but I don’t see any of my other family a lot.

I think this year was probably my favorite thanksgiving yet. Usually for me the holidays are pretty stressful, especially since I usually have to go to big family parties and interact with a bunch of people and talk about what I’m doing in school and such. But this year we went to my aunt and uncle’s house to have dinner. Not only that but my grandparents joined us for dinner as well which was really nice. And to add onto that, we brought along my best friend and her little brother since they don’t celebrate thanksgiving. It was their first proper thanksgiving dinner and it was really nice to hang out with both of them. Especially since we got to sit around and eat and pet a cat.

In conclusion my thanksgiving was really nice this year; especially considering I don’t usually enjoy the holidays.

  2. My favorite story would be the one “ The shelter didn’t have an oven” because she was grateful to get a turkey. Even though she didn’t have enough she still manage to eat that turkey in a different way. The purpose of thanksgiving is giving back to people and to be grateful in this short story we see that. The reason I celebrate thanksgiving is to spend time with my family where we all can sit together at the table. Since we all are busy we basically don’t have time to spend with each other thanksgiving is a moment where we can. It is a moment to have family time and not worry about the other things around us for just a day. Everyone needs to spend time with their love ones even if it is not your family and also to give back to others who need it the most. I think the most memorable thanksgiving would be the day where we i spend it with my family and help my family help with the food. It is great to see the whole family get together to spend this time to help out. We all do a part so we can all finish faster to eat. Mostly seeing everyone coming together and having a great time is nice to see because it is rare for most of them to stay together. Many are working or live far so for one day to come together doesn’t hurt anybody. Just spending it with my family is amazing because no matter what they are always with you. The moments spend together are also special to everyone and the effort put it in to see each other is great too. Everyone brings or cooks different dishes that there is so much food to eat is good. This is the most memorable moment every year for me to spend it with my loves one for one day to eat together.

  3. My favorite story would have to be the 1st. The reason why the first story was my favorite is because of the kindness the mom had towards the marines that she invited them to her house for thanksgiving to let them have an actual Thanksgiving dinner instead of just having pizza for Thanksgiving. It also shows that an act of kindness be amazing. The marines stayed and played board games with the family and helped them clean up the dishes from the feast.

The reason I celebrate Thanksgiving is that it’s a day to show and remember the things in your life that you are grateful for such as family, pets, friends, etc. This holiday means a lot to me because it’s one of the only days my families from Georgia and Ohio are able to come down to spend time with us. It’s really fun and nostalgic when they visit, I miss the fun times we all spend every Thanksgiving or holiday they come down and I am thankful whenever they are able to come visit. It is sad and upsetting though when they have to leave because I won’t be able to see them again for a while and it’s tough when they live six or thirteen hours away.

My most memorable Thanksgiving would have to be this year or the year of 2017’s Thanksgiving, my family from Ohio and Georgia and Puerto Rico were able to come down to spend it with us. We had a bunch of different foods and we had a lot of fun. Picture a large family sitting down together eating a Thanksgiving feast while talking about good old memories and having fun while cracking some jokes, that’s how my Thanksgiving was and I wish it would have lasted longer. I miss my family since they left and I can’t wait for the next holiday for them to come down, it always brightens up my family’s day when they come to visit, everyone is so happy and everyone gets along together well. This is what Thanksgiving means to me and I wouldn’t change it for anything else, Thanksgiving to me means family and nothing is more important than family. :)

    1. You and I picked the same article, for very different reasons. Although they both have the positive aspects as well as the visual thoughts to go along with. I can imagine your Thanksgiving dinner with your family, meaning it's very descriptive. Everything is positive about your vlog. And especially the part about your family coming down from different STATES & COUNTRIES. That makes it extra special. I hope you look forward to making more blessed and happy memories with your family.

    2. I agree! This years Thanksgiving was the most memorable for me. While I didn't have a lot of family at my celebration, it was still a really nice Thanksgiving and I had a really nice time.

  4. My favorite article was the one about “My mother couldn’t stand the idea of someone eating pizza for Thanksgiving.” Because it demonstrates the everyday struggles people go through and even the one’s who wear the capes and protect us (marines) struggle too, not everyone notices because they are too worried about themselves. Thankfully this kind mother invited them over and let them had a fresh homemade dinner that they probably did not have in a mile (MRE’s military packaged food) is all they eat. I do not celebrate Thanksgiving. I used too, until my family went their own separate ways. What it used to mean to me was that, our close loved ones sat together and ate together as a family once a year. The day everyone takes off, and we would stuff our faces until our tummy could no longer take it. It was always filled with nothing but joy and happiness. The most memorable thing about my Thanksgiving was, way back when in 2010, my mom woke up extra early to get the turkey ready, she made a bunch of other dishes like… mashed potatoes, green beans, stuffing and yams. The turkey ended up burning and we just ate the rest. She was so upset about this happening but the rest of the food was great. We kept Thanksgiving alive that day.

    1. My favorite article was the same one you picked. I agree we are to busy and ignorant to notice other peoples struggles. My mom and dad used to wake up super early aswell. The last few years in my house the spirit hasnt been there. My family split up as well so I can relate to how youre feeling.

    2. I liked this one to because it showed that people would be nice enough to let those people in the house and feed them food and do the stuff with them

  5. The first story about the Marines was my favorite. No one should ever have to spend thanksgiving alone, and, eating pizza. Especially not the men who serve for the country to keep us all safe. I thought it was a very nice gesture for the mom to do. I think more people should be like her. They treated the marines as if they were their own family. This mother acted how we should all act, we should all be a family and come together on this day, and everyday.
I celebrate thanksgiving as a day once a year that everyone can get together and be thankful for each other and their lives. Everyone, meaning my family. I almost never see anyone except my immediate family for the majority of the year. Thanksgiving makes me realize how seperated my family is, it is quite upsetting to know that no one even cares to see each other except on one day out of the whole year. My most memorable thanksgiving was when my grandma was alive and all my relatives flew in and stayed at my house to celebrate together. This has not happened again since I was much younger. Everyone brang something, and we all ate and relaxed together. We played games and caught up with each other. I never wanted that day to end, seeing everyone together made me feel so happy. We had “sweet potato mellow” as my mom called it. Which has been a tradition ever since I was born. It is my absolute favorite thanksgiving food ever. Even now, with my mom and sister living far away, my dad still makes it. To me it is a symbol of our family and how it used to be. Our idea of thanks giving is similar to many other families. We watch the parade and football, play games, and then we eat way more food then we can handle.

  6. My favorite story is “My mother couldn’t stand the idea of anyone eating pizza before thanksgiving”, because the facts that this mother let 2 strangers come and eat thanksgiving with their family. People with big hearts like that deserve so much more than they have. Its basically their way of saying i am thankful for you. Not saying everyone is unappreciative, but most of this generation is. But on thanksgiving just letting everyone and everything know you’re thankful is good and makes everyone more happy and makes their day more enjoyable.
I think most people as a whole celebrate thanksgiving because everyone has since forever. I think after a while people start to appreciate it less and forget the meaning. Thanksgiving is just basically a whole day where people say they are thankful for things they take advantage of everyday. Its one day a year people actually appreciate what they have.
My thankgivings are never exciting anymore. For about the past 4 years ive spent every holiday with my step-family. Since about 2013 i haven’t actually spent it with my family. I dread thanksgiving and most holidays because my step-family hates me and my sister and it makes the holidays tense and not fun, or enjoyable. Although i am thankful i am not spending the holidays alone.
The last thanksgiving that i throughly enjoyed was the thanksgiving before my grandma on my dad’s side passed away. Me my grandma and my sister would always bring stuff to my aunts and my entire side of my dad’s family would be there. But that was when we were young and all got along. It was more fun back then, but i think it was just because i was younger and was spoiled. But it does make everything better if it’s with your own family. But i am appreciative at least i had food and a home this thanksgiving, and i hope i always do.

Most of us were taught to give thanks on Thanksgiving Day.
For me the day of thanksgiving is to give thanks for everything we have, for me the day of thanksgiving is to spend time with your family or loved ones. This Thanksgiving Day I passed by my house because my mother made food and my brothers, uncles, aunts and my cousins were celebrating the Thanksgiving Day, all thanking for being well, and also a few sad because my grandparents are in mexico, we all eat too much food and too many desserts, after that everyone was awake to go to black friday. it was a great moment and I was very happy because we are always your family is reunited. I can not explain much about Thanksgiving because we only spent three years in the United States but I learned that that day is to give thanks for everything and be happy with your family

  8. I liked the that was titled my mother couldn’t stand the thought of anyone eating pizza on thanksgiving. I liked this one because it shows how kind people could be on thanksgiving to take them into there house and feed them just because they were just going to eat pizza which is still get them a good thing to eat but at the same time it was nice since these people served our country and they deserve a good meal this is why i picked this one because of the mom being nice to those people and they helped out with the stuff in the house. I celebrate thanksgiving because it brings all our family because I don’t see my family expect for these kind of holidays so then people could come together and have a big feast and talk about all the stuff they have done for the past since other times you don’t really do those kind of things during other holidays or we don’t eat all those things. What the holiday means to me is that you could bring everyone together and it started all the way like back then and we have had joy and fun during the times that i have saw and done it will help me and other people and seems like a holiday to help people. My most memorable thanksgiving was about 5 years ago when i used to go to my grandparents house instead of going out to eat but when we did have it at there house we had more people there and we could talk about stuff that we did and we could actually run around or make stuff that we didn’t have to wait for or could have alot of stuff but its better now that we just go out to eat because my grandma always had to cook and she always cooked for holidays so it was better that we just go out to eat or do stuff and if we went out earlier people could go to black friday shopping.

    1. I picked the same article as you about the mother inviting the marines into her house. I don’t think anyone should be alone on thanksgiving, it wouldn't be thanksgiving alone. I think it’s nice that there still people in the world that’ll do nice things like that. Just invite complete strangers into your home so they aren’t alone. It lets you know that the world's still a good place.

  9. The story “My mother couldn’t stand the idea of anyone eating pizza on thanksgiving” is my favorite story. I would have done the same thing, mostly because they were marines. This kids mother inviting the marines into her house for thanksgiving shows she’s thankful for their service like everyone should be. No one should be eating pizza on thanksgiving to it’s not thanksgiving without turkey and stuffing and all those foods. I celebrate thanksgiving to show thanks to the people in my family, the people who serve this country, and to all the things in life. To me thanksgiving is waking up in the morning not eating till dinner then eating till you have to unbutton your pants, then keep eating. Then going to watch football and me taking everyone on a tractor ride with my grandpa's tractor. Then when all the little kids go inside me and my cousins race his tractors around his property. This thanksgiving was probably my most memorable thanksgiving I’ve ever had. In the past years we just raced quads or my grandpa's tractors around his property. This year I took my truck and my cousins who are around my age brought their cars and trucks. My cousin has a old jeep cherokee that he brought and my other cousin’s boyfriend bought his ford focus that he made in a “rally” car. We all drove to where we always used to race and parked and went inside and hang out with my family. Later we all snuck away with my uncles and marked out a race track and raced around his property which is something like one hundred and fifty acres. It’s all legal even know we don’t have our license because it’s on his property. We just raced on the dirt roads around his property and none of us crashed. My cousin’s boyfriend got stuck with his ford focus and I had to pull him out which we made fun of him for. I ended up winning the race which kinda surprised me. This thanksgiving was probably my most memorable thanksgiving and probably will always be.

  10. The story that was my favorite was “The Possum. In the Pie” because it was quick and straight to the point. It wasnt long and it wasnt to dramatic. Another thing I liked about the story was that it was funny when they opened the door to see an ugly possum digging into their pumpkin pie. That part really had me dying with laughter. This was the best story I have read all day. Like reading that story made my day my a thousand times better than it was before. If i could i would read that story again, over and over until i get bored of it because that story is the best thing ever and it should be more popular in today’s society. Like literally this story should be the next big thing that happens in this world.

I celebrate thanksgiving because it is a time where everyone can gather around and be thankful for what is currently their and not to think about the negatives. It is also a time to feast on some food. This holiday, to me, means to form together with your family and be happy with each other. It also means to enjoy ourselves and be happy with what you have and just live life to the fullest. Also it is honestly the best time to bond with each other and get closer to each other.
My best memorable Thanksgiving is last year because that was when I was actually eating all the food and eating all the deserts. That year was also the time when we had lots of people come over and just had a chill relaxing time talking to each other. We made so many memories that year and I would like to relive that day all over again because it was the best thanksgiving ever. I hope that the next upcoming thanksgiving will be even better than the ones before.

  11. My favorite story was about the possum in the pie because i can kind of relate to the scene of the possum in the pumpkin pie and i have crossed a setting with a possum before. The story reminded me of one time a few years ago when i was coming home from somewhere with my family and we pulled into the car port and we saw a possum, my dad being the brave one, got out and chased it away as we watched it hiss at him and eventually run away into the woods. Thinking back it was kind of funny but at the time it was kind of scary.

We celebrate thanksgiving because it’s a great time to get family together and spend time together and just have fun and bond while eating. Even though i did not spend thanksgiving with my family i still ate a lot and enjoyed myself. After thanksgiving i went black friday shopping and scored some pretty good deals at several stores, the only bad part was waiting in line for forty five minutes for one shirt. I shopped for almost four hours and managed to get everyone christmas gifts and even myself a little gift. After thanksgiving it’s tradition to put up the christmas tree and decorate for christmas so i spent the day helping my mom decorate and even came up with some good ideas for decorating.

I do not think i recall a most memorable thanksgiving. Thanksgivings are always a memory because you spend quality time with people who are there for you and those you love. We spend all day cooking many healthy foods like squash, turn-ups, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes and stuffing. We also have the unhealthy stuff like pumpkin pie and homemade cookies and homemade cranberry sauce. I love eating thanksgiving food and enjoying time with my family while remembering and making memories as we go throughout the night.

  12. In my opinion, i liked the short paragraph with the three marines and the mother brought them over or thanksgiving. I liked this one the most. The reason is because this shows what thanksgiving is about. It shows this woman cares enough to drag them to her house to eat for thanksgiving. This was really something to think about. This was really nice because she did not have to do this. This is just great. The reason i celebrate thanksgiving is because it's a time to get with your family and be together and be happy. It's to enjoy dinner as one big family. That's why i celebrate it. My thanksgiving consisted of first everyone coming over. Then we all hung out while my mom finished cooking. Then we all ate. It was so good. We had dessert, then watched a christmas movie like every year. That's how my thanksgiving went.

  13. My favorite short story out of 3 my favorite one was ‘My mother couldn't stand the idea of anyone eating pizza for thanksgiving’ it was touching how one mother was so generous enough to invite 3 marines over her house to eat because those 3 marines were planning to eat pizza for thanksgiving which my mother couldn't stwe and.they were so nice they played board games watched football, adn even washed the dishes. That story was touching how one person can make an impact on anyone life.I celebrate thanksgiving because i live in America and it s a tradition in america and because thanksgiving is a day to be thankful for all the things you have in your life.this holiday means to me everything to me because it shows i was blessed to have my family and friends with me and the talents i have within me and fast cars.the most memorable thanksgiving i had was with my entire family back in lacey with my 3 uncles and aunts. Those are the memories i remember when i was young me and my cousins would always be making a mess while my mom and aunt cook my dad and uncles are in the gardge getting the table and chairs.it was around 2 p.m. and me and my cousins decied to go in the basement to kick a soccer ball around and the only light was one dangling from the roof so and we kicked the ball for a couple of minutes and we had the idea to play kickball inside the basement, and us being 8 years old we thought nothing was going to go wrong.Later on my cousin was up kicked the ball to high it broke the light bud that was dangling from the roof, and so us being we ran outside and acted like nothing happened.LAte on we had a great dinner and then went out to find a christmas tree.Couple days later they found out and we got a beating.

  14. My favorite story out of the 3 that I have read has to be “A possum. In the pie.” when I first saw the title I was thinking it would be really boring. At the end of the story when it said “My brother came rushing over (probably suspecting I’d actually dropped the pie)” it was by far my favorite part about the whole story. If I was the brother, waiting all day to eat, and mostly making the food too and then I heard someone screaming in the kitchen my first thought would be someone dropped the food. That would be everyone's first thought if they were the brother in the situation. This is why this was my favorite story.

Some reasons why I celebrate thanksgiving is because a great opportunity to have my family together. Everyone in my family is busy all year around or some live far so it's hard to have everyone together and this day gives us a chance to be together. Also when we are together we can all look at each other and say how lucky we are to be alive and well. Thanksgiving to me means being grateful for what I have in life. They are kids who are not as lucky as me so it makes me be more grateful about life.

The most memorable thanksgiving I had was about 3 years ago. My whole family decided to throw to a big party and invite people that were close to our family to celebrate with us. Everyone was having fun, there was dancing, food and other things. The grown ups started to bring the alcohol and by 11 pm most of the grown ups had being drunk or passed out so mostly everyone slept over in one house. There were about 50 people sleeping that thanksgiving night. That would be the only time my family ever throws a big party like that for thanksgiving.

  15. The mouth watering smell of a homemade Thanksgiving dinner fills the air. Every room in the house is intoxicated with this delicious thanksgiving smell. When dinner is called upon, the shuffling footsteps of my famine family can be heard miles from the house. As we all are gathered around the long, rectangular oak wood table, covered in a crème colored cloth, a sudden warm, content feeling is felt. The lighting is dim to nothing. Although there are several lengthy candles lit, it is the presence of each other’s faces that light the dining room. the feast finally begins. No one cubic inch of table is left empty. In the center of the table is the large turkey. It is the size of four footballs, an awfully big, bulky, bird. Surrounding the turkey, like the planets orbiting the sun, are diverse dishes. There are several mountains of potatoes, fluffy marshmallow/sweet potatoes and grandma’s finest mashed potatoes. The pale colored mountains of rich, creamy deliciousness sit next to a sea of boiling gravy. There is also the stuffing. Various chocolate covered fruits can be found. Two diverse sweet nesses mixed together, providing your taste buds with a mini shock of sugariness. The brownies are always superior. The brown, baked, batches have a hard chocolate shell on the outside and an overflow of chocolate in the inside; when a bite is taken from this dessert a waterfall of chocolate oozes into your mouth. But the true superstar of desserts is grandma’s fresh from the oven apple pies. The thick and crunchy bread, guards the sweet cinnamon syrup and apple custards on the inside. This Thanksgiving dinner was sure to be a memorable one. The food was not the best part though. The best part was sharing not only a delicious dinner, but the whole night with the loving and good cooking family, I love this Holaday because i love food

  16. My favorite story was the one with the mom who invited the Marines to her house because she couldn’t stand the idea of anyone eating pizza on Thanksgiving. It is my favorite story because she didn’t have to invite three strangers into her house, but she did it anyway because she couldn’t fathom the idea of anyone eating pizza on such of a special day like Thanksgiving.

I celebrate Thanksgiving because I really don’t have another choice. The truth is, if it was up to me, I would just stay in bed all day,but I can’t.  The reason why is because there’s loud music, people talking and a lot of noise in my house. Thanksgiving is a very special day for our family because it means to give thanks for what we have and for life.  My grandma was just released from the hospital from having a stroke Wednesday night; a day before Thanksgiving, therefore this Thanksgiving was extra special for our family. Although I prefer to be in bed all day sleeping, I did enjoyed this year’s Thanksgiving because I was thankful that my grandmother was home with us to celebrate it and not in the Hospital. Also, every year on Thanksgiving night, we put up the Christmas tree and decorate it listening to Christmas carols singing, eating and dancing.

On Thanksgiving this year, my mom cooked from ten in the morning till six in the afternoon. She cooked lasagna, a turkey in the oven, yellow rice and beans, potato salad, mac and cheese, flan and everybody’s favorite; “coquito” which is a spanish drink. My grandma even cooked her specialty, “fricassee turkey,” which is a whole turkey in a big pot like soup. It is my favorite because it has a lot of potatoes in it.

  17. My favorite story is that there was a possum i the pie when she put the pie on the window ledge to cool down. When she looked back to check on it and it was right before the family was about to be over to eat dinner.
The reason i celebrate thanksgiving is to give thanks to the that are in my life and gather friends that we are close to. The holiday means to me is that it’s the one day we can all be together and celebrate with everyone other then other holidays and not buy stuff with others.
The most memorable thanksgiving that i remember is going fishing with failie on the beach with our dog that we got the month and we set of fireworks to celebrate that year and to have a fun time
