Fionamania
has swept the country. Videos of
her twirling around in the water, Rubenesque and graceful, rack up millions of
views online. She photo-bombed a local couple’s engagement photo,
and it wound up on “The Tonight Show.” The popular Cincinnati ice cream
purveyor Greater’s made a “Chunky Chunky Hippo” flavor over the summer — a
toffee base with salted peanuts and caramel truffles — that sold out at the zoo
every day it was available. A local T-shirt company, Cincy Shirts, screen-printed
a small batch of tees with the words “Feeling Hip” along with a cartoon
rendering of Fiona in February, and has since shipped 30,000 Fiona-branded
products (including tees, stickers, magnets and now Christmas sweaters
featuring Fiona in a Santa hat) all over the world.
Fiona
starred in her own 7-episode reality show sponsored
by Facebook. The zoo’s director, Thane Maynard, sold a children’s book called
“Saving Fiona: The Story of the World’s Most Famous Baby Hippo” to Houghton
Mifflin Harcourt, scheduled for the spring of 2018, with proceeds benefiting
the animal’s care. The Cincinnati Reds are planning to have an official “Fiona
Day” at the ballpark next summer, complete with commemorative hippopotamus
bobbleheads. Twitter fans have become obsessed with Fiona’s flatulence.
She has become America’s Large Adult Daughter, its triumphant baby queen, its
reigning diva with the skin texture of a wet avocado.
Being
at the center of a 24/7 hype machine for a 500-pound (and growing) starlet can
be exhausting, and Ms. Curley got her tattoo as a way to commemorate the
intensity of the past year. “I didn’t think any experience would ever top this
experience,” she said. “I’m never going to regret getting it.”
“We
think this is just Michelle’s way of one-upping her groupie status,” said Chad
Yelton, the zoo’s vice president of marketing. “She has all the merch, the
tumblers, the calendar. If there’s something with Fiona’s face on it, she has
to have it first.”
When
Fiona was born, no one expected her to survive. Bibi, her lumbering, obstinate
mother (“Fiona gets all of her diva tendencies from her mom,” said Christina
Gorsuch, the curator for African mammals) gave birth six weeks early, and the
baby weighed only 29 pounds. Most viable hippos weigh between 55 and 120 pounds
at birth; premature infants rarely pull through. “In the first six weeks, there
was at least once a week when we were sure she was going to die,” said Ms.
Gorsuch, who was wearing a pair of hippo-shaped stud earrings in her office
next to the antelope pen. “I kept telling the keepers to call me in the middle
of the night when the inevitable happens.”
She was
kept in the bestial equivalent of a newborn I.C.U., with round-the-clock care
that included visits from local nurses from Cincinnati Children’s Hospital who
located her tiny veins for an IV during a nasty bout of dehydration. Scientists
at the zoo milked a hippo for the first time — “we had no idea what was in
hippo milk before now,” Ms. Gorsuch said — so that they could recreate the
formula for Fiona’s bottles. Every day, between January and May 15, when Fiona
finally was able to promenade around the hippo tank for the public, seemed to
bring a new health crisis. All of this was documented on social media for the
world to see.
Overnight,
Fiona became a symbol of resilience and positivity. Buzzfeed ran listicles of
her bravest moments, calling her a “sassy, unbothered, unproblematic queen.”
NPR ran a national report on
her swelling celebrity status. One website called her
“The Only Good Thing Left in This World.”

There are plenty of social media “stars” that I follow or watch, but my favorite would have to be Shane Dawson. I’ve been watching his Youtube account since about 2010, although his content is a little vulgar. I’ve always just found him really funny and relatable. Even now, I still watch his videos and enjoy what he puts out onto Youtube.
ReplyDeleteI actually haven’t seen any “Fionamania” memorabilia or news, this is the first I’m seeing or hearing of it. Usually the things I tend to follow people on social media or actors/actresses.
Now that I know more about Fiona, I can understand why she is a celebrity media darling. There are plenty of accounts that are “famous” on social media, like instagram and twitter, that are just accounts of pets. I, myself, actually follow an account my friend made of his dog. Not only that, but there are also accounts that people make of their pets, or even of celebrities when they’re not actually those people. These days, a lot of the accounts on social media that do get famous usually don’t do anything particularly cool that gets them famous. A lot of the time their content alone, or even a rumor, gets them famous. For example, the actor Jake Paul got famous on Youtube after he quite disney and decided to make a diss track against his brother. Which I still don’t really understand why people like him because I don’t particularly find him too interesting. Not only that, but the Kardashians somehow managed to get themselves famous despite not doing anything to get themselves famous. Really, just drama and rumors about their family got them famous. Somehow, they even managed to get themselves a TV show about their daily lives.
Other examples of people or things that have drawn fame are, like I said in the paragraph above, the Kardashian’s. There are actually plenty of people or accounts on social media that got famous due to ridiculous rumors about them. Also, there are people like The Gabbie Show, on Youtube that got famous just for doing videos that people like and enjoy. There are plenty of other Youtubers that also make videos, even if they’re just videos that are what they do in a day, that people really tend to enjoy.
In conclusion, on social media there are plenty of people that got famous from basically doing nothing.

DeleteMy favorite social media star would have to be the gaming youtuber Markiplier. The reason why I choose this person is because he is caring about his fans, he also does charities for good causes and also even though he’s been through a lot he was able to still remain happy and bright. Markiplier plays many games such as Subnautica, FNAFs, Hello Neighbor, etc. The way Markiplier acts while playing the games is funny and humorous as well and hilarious. It is also great to see his videos where he talks about his fans and thanks them for all they’ve done for them over the years while he was on youtube. Another one of my favorite social media stars would be H20Delirious not only for his funny gmod videos but also him playing with the others; Vanoss, Daithi De Nogla, Moo Snuckel, Wildcat, Cartoonz and etc. The group play multiple gmod server games and GTA as well, there prophunt videos are my favorites.
ReplyDeleteI actually haven’t seen any Fionamania or news to be honest, or at least I don’t remember, if I did or not, the only thing I have seen about an animal is about a seal that was being released into the ocean and was eaten by a shark or a bird being freed and it got eaten by a bigger bird.
I can kinda see why Fiona became a celebrity media darling a little bit, no one thought that she would have been able to survive after she was born due to her mother giving birth to her 3 weeks earlier then she was suppose to be born and she was underweight being born only 25 pounds!
Other examples of someone getting famous off the internet was the Cash Me Outside Girl aka Danielle Bregoli. After her episode on the Dr.Phil show people though when she said catch me outside how bout that, that she actually said cash me outside how bout that instead due to her accent.
I have seen some of his videos and he is pretty funny. Also the cash me outside girl was huge lmao.

DeleteIf i had to pick my favorite social media star, it would have to be Tanner Fox. The reason behind this is that he is a drama free social media star. He is one of the very few that does not get caught up in all that. That's only one reason. Second is that he's so positive about everything and lives life to the fullest. That's really something to admire. Also, i have seen this hippo on the news a few times. It is really amazing how she survived all that. Also, i can see why she is a social media “star” now. I can because she went through all this, and it was on the news so people followed her through her journey and now can see her get better. Thats amazing. Lastly, i do know something got got fame and how. It was harambe. He was a gorilla and got shot after a kid jumped into his pit and he was trying to help the kid and protect him and got shot. I know this was to protect the kid but this was an outrage from people all over the world. This was a huge deal because everyone knew about it. Literally everyone was talking about it. This was truly huge. This is who is my favorite social media star and about fiona and something else that made it to the news.

DeleteMy favorite social media star is ricegum because he is a good youtuber and is has good content he will roast people like jake paul or other people that have tried to roast him and they didn’t do it as good as they did. He is a popular youtube person and is good at what he does and has a group that he will do videos or he will mostly do them by himself since thats what alot of youtubers do so that’s who i think is social media star that i like and who makes good content. He has good merch that people have bought but i have never got it yet because i don’t really feel like spending money. I don’t think i have seen fiona monia on the news but i probably have heard about this premature animal but i think it is cool to see this and that people enjoy to see the sea animal do the tricks that it does for us to see i wish i could go see it so i can look at how cool it could be to look at it and how famous it got in only a short amount of time and how it blew up.
ReplyDeleteYes i can understand why fiona got so big in so little short because she did some good tricks and did a lot of other things that made the her popular like twirling or other stuff. But some other things that i don't understand is that how people would get so amazed about seeing it twirl around but people get amazed i guess over these things. It probably drew fame and followers by sharing the videos that they had about the animal and or talking about it to friends or family telling them to go see the sea animal so then that's how it got even more popular from people telling them about it and them doing other things to get it to where it is now.
I've only ever heard about ricegum through my little siblings, other than that the word has never came up. I never even knew that he had merchandise until it came up in your blog. You and i have very different views on the famous hippo Fiona. But i believe that both of the descriptions are positive.

I like watching things on youtube like gaming by Jackspeticeye because i do not like playing video games but i do not mind watching them. Watching them is like watching an interesting television show. It is enjoyable and most of the time funny. Another thing i enjoy to watch on youtube is conspiracy theories by Shane Dawson. Since i am a very gullible person who enjoys a good scare from time to time and trying to understand unsolved mysteries i enjoy this kind of mystical atmosphere i get when watching them, it is kind of a thrill. Sometimes when i am on facebook i like to watch cooking recipe videos and would one day like to learn how to cook the things i watch and enjoy them considering i am not the best cook, in fact i do not cook at all.
ReplyDeleteI personally have never heard of Fion or any of her fans or anything over social media about her. I did not know about her until i read this article. I still do not know why Fion is a social media star. Many children and animals are born premature and no one else gets news for it, and i am sure there are thousands more of animals being born premature throughout the days, months, years. Even though, yes Fion is a really cute animal and i am sure her little existence is welcomed i can not fathom on my she is so popular. There are many situation in which someone we did not even know popped into the limelight out of the blue and because a huge star is such a small amount of time. For example Miley Cyrus first started off as an actor on her own show, she most likely got famous going through her dad who was already a famous singer at the time, later on Miley’s career blossomed and she became a famous singer herself.
Jacksepticeye is awesome to watch play the games. Shawn Dawson is hilarious to watch as well.
DeleteSocial media is becoming more popular by the minute. There are a shockingly large number of social media stars. My favorite social media star is Andrea Russett. She originally started out as a vlogger on youtube. She became very popular when she made a video with her ex boyfriend and famous vine star Cameron Dallas. Andrea makes videos about herself and her life, she also makes makeup videos and does challenges. I have grown to like her over the years and think that she is very talented. Her growing popularity has landed her multiple movie jobs and TV jobs as well.

After reading the article about Fiona I have learned that she has become a social media star. I learned that she was prematurely born and is now 10-11 months old. She got her fame due to the zoo manager filming her. She now has a 7 episode tv show. People from everywhere are traveling just to see the “Fionamania.” She is a cute animal which I can understand why people have taken a liking to her. They are gaining a lot of money which is never a bad thing for animals in a zoo.
I can remember another zoo story where an animal gained a lot of attention. This story was about a gorilla named Hambre. He too was a social media star. One day he was shot for a apparent attack on a child. People rioted for months on the unlawful murder of the animal. Many teenagers took a stand as well, they began to write his name everywhere possible. The gorilla became famous for being a cute funny animal as well. His popularity grew immensley, after his death. This animal was harmed because people locked him up in the first place. Animals espically like gorillas are not supposed to be held captive in a zoo. Unfortunatley this animal had to pay the worse price for acting how a wild animal always acts.
I agree with the captivism of wild animals is bad, but i like how you enjoy andrea russet shes a good person to idolize
DeleteMy favorite social media star is Mikey Manfre. He is so funny and he used to go to central. He basically set everyone else up. He is basically showing us that you can start from the bottom and end up living a life you always wanted. Knowing you can live in bayville as a low income family to living in a condo in California, is extremely fansinating. Doing things you love and get you places.
ReplyDeleteI dont really understand why people are raving about this hippo. She really isn’t that special if you think about it. A lot of animals are born premature, but they don’t get the attention she did? People need to stop giving things and people attention when they don’t deserve it. A lot more important things or people deserve the attention she’s getting. She photobombed a photo, yeah, a lot of animals do, but people usually forget about it within a week. They don’t start fanclubs or stan these animals.
I think only certain people deserve to be ‘famous’, if you stand up for something you believe in then yes you do deserve to have some spotlight. But people hurting themselves or being funny don’t deserve this spot light when others do. People are really out here doing big things and people eating weird stuff or doing weird things are more important? Like if you’re doing what you love and are progressing and making money, good for you, keep doing you. But people who are famous for being ignorant and arrogant don’t deserve that spotlight. They gain fame because people live for drama, people live to see people being put down then the brightside of things. People really take nothing into consideration when ‘stanning’ someone. Like what do you even like about them? Why do you idolized them? Exactly if you cant answer them with good qualities you should rethink what you are doing. But in all reality people will like what they like and no one can really tell them different. Whatever makes you happy makes you happy.

My favorite social media star is Gabbie Hanna because she is very open to her fans about her life as well as being very humble and kind. She is a Youtuber who I relate to a lot as in interests, family life, and overall views. She’s known for her music, books, and her videos on Youtube, which consist of what her life is like and any kind of discoveries about herself and life. In a way she has helped me find out more things about life and the people around me. Her kindness toward her fans also make her one of my favorites. I have seen videos of her at meet and greets with her fans and she never ceases to smile and make them feel like a star. She has done so much for her fans as well, she flew from the UK during one of her tours to meet a fan and spend time with them just because they were one of her first followers/subscribers.
Fiona the baby hippo is not something I have heard about until now. I also do not remember seeing any merchandise for her or seeing anything on the news ,but from what I have read, she seems like a big deal. I do see why she is such a viral obsession not only for her fight against the odds but her adorable face. She looks like she loves the camera and that gives people ideas of how she is and how much a little animal like her can impact our lives as people. Fiona gives the media and the people following her a sense of strength and hope. Another animal who drew fame from just being a miracle is Winter the dolphin whose had books, movies, show segments and awards given to her because of her strength. Winter had a slim to no chance of survival because of an accident causing her to lose her tail. Although she is still on a long road to recovery she has become a star because of the hope shes given people.
Daisy Marquez is my favorite social media star she a youtuber beauty girl that makes makeup tutorials. She inspires many young girls and boys to start doing their makeup, she also makes creative makeup looks. She is the most humble person because she loves to give back to all who support her and that is the most amazing thing because once many people start getting famous they change. She does a great job with her videos that I like to watch and others should too. No, this is the first time i hear about Fiona i never heard seen anything about her but I can tell many do love her. Fiona shows love to the people that’s why people admire her which makes sense because of that love she shows. Videos of her twirls is what made it all around the world, people came interested in her. Since many go visit her at the zoo is what makes her well known in a public place. That is great that people became attach to her that quick I was not aware of her but it is a cute thing to see. Another one who made it big was Quincy the most adorable dog who owner made videos of him doing things that an ordinary dog wouldn’t t do. The most well know video is when his owner put a camera on him left him home alone where you see at the end is cries the whole time. It is an emotional video that many watch and Quincy became famous right away with it. There is so many famous persons and animals out there in the world now that it is hard to keep up with each one of them. It is great to see all the different kinds of things that social media has to offers now in days. In the future there would be way more that will draw everyone attention we will just have to wait.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite social media star would be a guy named Pewdiepie back when he was a gamer he used to play horror games a lot and was hilarious now he makes reaction videos and is a little less funny. But he has gained more fame for branching out to things that social media make popular. I have never seen or heard of this hippopotamus before today. After reading the article i don’t really see why she “swept the country.” In a month or two there will be another abnormal animal that made it famous for something considered “cute” or “fearless.” Last summer it was a graefe being famous for being pregnant and going live on facebook for a few minutes everyday after she had the baby they went live for another two weeks and that was it no one has seen it or heard from it since now a hippo dancing underwater the internet tends to fall for stupid things. last year around this time two high schoolers got famous for pointing a camera at a pair of shoes and saying “damn daniel” and since then you could do anything post it on the internet and be famous for a few months but then no one will ever hear about you again you post your video or picture, go on ellen and then that’s it and the next dumb thing takes your place.

Another social media star, is Kim Kardashian she makes money just for showing up for events. She practically gets paid for being alive! I guess I’m just looking at the celebrity WOMEN, that are making money. Both have their own way of pulling in. They were both discovered for their fame for the worst reasons. Although everyone has their own way of making money. I hope that if and i will ( think positive ) come up and make the money to maintain my standards luxurious life. Hope and pray to soon be back on my grind again.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite social media star would have to RiceGum. I choose him because him because he always makes these fire diss tracks on other social media . For example, Jake Paul got dissed by him because he was being being disrespectful to Alissa Violet who is another famous celebrity. RiceGum in general is just a good guy and creates some hilarious content on YouTube. His fanbase is always very huge because of his raps and music.

I have heard of a Famous Gorilla named Harambe but never of a hippo. Since I have read about Fiona, I can see why she is a Celebrity. Fiona was prematurely born and barely made it through. She weighed 29 pounds at birth while normal born hippos are at least 50 pounds. She first made her appearance through a photo she bombed when these two people took a photo. It ended up on The Tonight Show and from there she has been an internet sensation. Facebook made a 7 episode show about her and has been on shirts.
An example that in can think that became famous and gained followers was Jake Paul. He became famous because he would always cause beef with people who have more following and more popularity than him. He is always seeking attention and will do anything for it. He’s also lied a lot to get the fame he has now and some people will say that he doesn’t deserve any of it. He has become a meme to everyone because of the music he produces and everyone basically knows him. From little kids to actual adults, a lot of people know him. It is kinda crazy too see that such a man could lie and do all these things to get attention just to get more fame and popularity. I kinda laugh at him and really just enjoy the failing entertainment he makes.
Jake Paul is a social media star, with millions of followers across YouTube, Instagram and other sites. He's also, as it turns out, a terrible neighbor. He was Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Paul started making funny videos with his brother at age 10 and never slowed down. He was training to be a Navy Seal before he was sidetracked by fame. His family love that he got big from youtube. The people love him because he likes everything kids like and he know what the kids like.

Bibi was shipped to Cincinnati from the St. Louis Zoo, but she was born in Disney's Animal Kingdom. It's there that Gorsuch says she was socialized, around a large number of brothers, sisters, and other juvenile hippos. It was within only an hour of Fiona's birth that zookeepers removed her from Bibi's presence. Fiona was too small and weak to nurse on her own, so the team decided intervention was needed to save the baby. After about three months, zookeepers slowly acclimated the pair, and now they spend most of their time together. Fionamania has swept the country. My favorite social media star is Jake Paul. Jake Paul because he a funny guy got famous by working hard. He is from Ohio a place where its not likely to become famous. He is a vlogger and his videos are mad funny. If you see his videos you are able to see that Jake Paul is hella rich. Kids all over the world look up to him and not because he is tall. He brings smiles to little kids where ever he is.
ReplyDeleteI have seen some fiona mania memorabilia about Jake paul before. There are kids who have shirts of his face on it. In his vlogs, wherever he goes to like a special event, kids will start to crying with his merch or hand made signs. A lot of things and examples of fiona mania you can see on his vlogs.
Now that I know more about fiona I understand why the hippo is famous. Humans always have a soft spot for animals. Now that the animal is small and cute, humans are going to fall in love with the small cute animal. So it can also get the word out when people come and see the hippo at the zoo.
Another example, of someone becoming famous in a blank of an eye is some guy who said “Damn Daniel” in a funny voice. The video went online and people watched it. He grows followers and became trending everywhere. The guy went to The Ellen Show where he got an unlimited vans shoes. Later he went to poor countries to give shoes to those in need which made him grow even more.

I can see why she i loved by a lot of people because he is silly and funny, but now a days anyone can get famous by one picture of one video they become these average people to famous peple in days, week, or month just by posting one picture or videoone person i can think of that was just random person is ricegum because he stared out as an average person but later on after reasling roast on celbs kids, is where his youtube channel grew and later on he has a series on just roast that were funny.just this year or last year he made a diss track on jake paul which was amazing because he roast jake paul and his team 10 to shame and that also blew up his channel again because this youtubers now are just roasting other people for the views. Their funny and all but some get out of control and need to be stop.RIP TEAM 10 AND JAKE PAUļ½．

Everytime i see his youtube i get excited because i look foward to what he is going to do. When i watch him i feel like i am with him, when he mentions stuff about helping people. I have always wanted to have my face on my cloths and to have my own brand.

ReplyDeleteI have one of my favorite social media star has to be famous los he is hilarious and makes people laugh and gets paid to do it so in my eyes i think he living the dream he gets paid by his views so if he get 50 per view and gets a 2 million views he gets 1 million in profit but he’s definitely my favorite because he meets many basketball players just from talking about them in a bad or and they find him very humors he doesn’t really have any enemies he is very know and he is very well respected all nba players know who he is so when they make it on his Chanel and realize some of the stuff he says is just you can’t get mad because it’s funny no I’ve never seen fion and to be honest I surprised I didn’t she seem very popular and it seems that she is a big face on news and a lot of trending media so therefore she is a popular figure who everyone knows just like that huge gorilla that got put down because of the kid that jumped into his home yes I can understand beacuse harambe wasn’t meant to be a media star he just got killed for protecting him self and being curious but that boys life was seriously in danger and that was the best way the felt was to Handel the situation by putting him down also someone that just became famous is a little 13 year old girl named Daniel b got famous for being publicly ignorant and disrespectful and everyone got a laugh out of it beacuse they thought it was a joke but that’s a how she really acts on a everyday basis and it’s upsetting beacuse her mom really care about her and she just blew up on her on camera and it scary but now she rich and is trying to get her life together

My favorite social media star would have to be Queen naija, from Chris and Queens youtube channel. She is my personal favorite because she is funny , beautiful and talented. I am upset to reveal i have not seen anything on social media regarding Fiona . Learning about Fiona’s story i now can understand why she is a social media star, people love to see innocent beings push through their struggles and stay strong. I believe stories like this are examples of why you should stay motivated and never give up hope , even the impossible is indeed possible. Another example of someone becoming so famous and well known from social media that I can think of would happen to be Danielle Bergoli , the violent teen who became popular after an appearance on the Dr. Phil show where she disrespected her mother and the audience of the show telling them to “catch her outside”. I honestly don’t know why she became so famous and gained as much followers as she did but she is dragging out her 15 minutes of fame and is even making rap videos and buying luxurious things. Now Queen who i was talking about before is’nt famous for anything bad or for overcoming something life threatening, but because her personality attracts thousands , her goofy spirit is something you can’t get enough of and her voice is heaven sent. People like queen are one out of many talented people that are constantly overshadowed by the irrelevant nonsense that is put on the web everyday .

His music relates to situations teenagers go through and they just speak to you because you can relate to it. Other than this article I haven't seen anything of Fiona and usually i'm up to date with all social media animals. I can tell why Fiona is a social media star becauses shes a cute hippo and she's also a miracle from them not knowing if she was gonna live or not. One of the recent social media stars is the women who raised money for a homeless man that helped her with no gas.
