What Has Been Your Most Memorable Thanksgiving?

Do you celebrate Thanksgiving? How do you celebrate and with whom? Do you like this holiday?
So many of us come together to celebrate Thanksgiving, but the holiday means something different to everyone. We asked for a snapshot of your Thanksgiving — a story or a tradition or a dish that helps define your holiday, and hundreds of you responded. You shared funny stories, about the turkeys that were too big for your ovens. You shared tragic memories, about experiencing unbelievable heartache on a day that is supposed to bring people together. And you shared tales about overcoming hardship to create a memorable meal. Here are your stories; together, they help tell the story of the holiday itself.
These responses have been edited for length and clarity.
‘My mother couldn’t stand the idea of anyone eating pizza for Thanksgiving’
About 45 years ago, my mother made a last-minute run to the grocery store. There was a pizza parlor next to the store, and she watched as three Marines entered. My mother couldn’t stand the idea of anyone eating pizza for Thanksgiving dinner, so she dragged them home. She cooked enough for a small army every night anyway, so three more hearty appetites wouldn’t make a dent. These three young men spent the day with our family, played board games, watched football and shared our Thanksgiving dinner. They even helped with the dishes. I think they were the most polite people my parents ever had over. — Sandy Stinson, Santa Barbara, Calif.
‘The shelter didn’t have an oven’
I was homeless and living on New York City streets, in foster homes and homeless shelters. One Thanksgiving, I received a donated turkey — a thoughtful, generous gift, for which I was grateful. My shelter, however, didn’t have an oven where I could roast my dinner. Ultimately, I cut meat off the turkey bones, boiling it in a small pot on a hot plate — my only cooking appliance. The generosity of the donated turkey was tempered by the indignity I felt as a hungry person, scrambling to find any possible way to prepare my Thanksgiving meal. — Debra Vizzi, Hillside, N.J.
‘A possum. In the pie.’
When I arrived at my parents’ home a few hours before dinner, the pie I baked was still very warm. The refrigerator was already packed and bursting with food. It was a particularly chilly Thanksgiving that year, cold enough that I thought I’d just set the pie out on the back porch to chill until dessert time. The curtains had been drawn all evening, and when I parted them to open the sliding door and retrieve the pie I saw — to my horror — a small possum with its face buried in my perfectly cooked, beautifully seasoned pumpkin pie. I SCREAMED. It froze. My brother came rushing over (probably suspecting I’d actually dropped the pie) and witnessed the same scene. A possum. In the pie. — Sonja Groset, Lake Forest Park, Wash.

— Which of the stories was your favorite and why?
— Why do you celebrate Thanksgiving? What does the holiday mean to you?
— Give us a “snapshot” of your Thanksgiving. What has been your most memorable Thanksgiving and why?

  1. My most memorable Thanksgiving was about 5 or 6 years ago was when i spent thanksgiving with my entire family my grandma my grandpa, aunts and my dad and much more. We always used to have it at my grandmas house but now we all dont talk that much anymore my grandma and granpa and my mother arent on talking turms and my dad doesnt really get along with my mom so every thanks giving now is just my mom and us three kids its kinda quiet but we all make it a good thansgiving every year and this thnaksgiving was the best too because my dad and my aunt and cousin came over and i thought it was cool. I like thansgiving im just not really a fan of the food i dont really like turkey or stuffing or that cranberry stuff im just really like spending it for the family being all together. MY family doesnt have a specific reason to celebrate thanksgiving but we celebrate thanksgiving for the family and to all be together and just talk. THe story that was my favorite "the possum in the pie" because i just thought it was funny how they took the time to make it whole made and an animal got into it. if i was them i would have not put it outside i would have just put it in the refridgerator for alittle. i like thanksgiving do you?

  2. My favorite story was the one about the homeless lady that received a turkey on thanksgiving. It's nice knowing that there are nice people in this world willing to help the homeless. She was living on the streets of new york and someone got her a turkey and had to use the appliances she had to make the turkey. This is amazing that some people care about the homeless.it's sad to know that people like us are out in the streets getting spit on and getting called names like they are not anything and like they are trash. Everyone is human too. People like helping the homeless and We need more people like this in the world that don't care about themself and care about other people. Its pretty sad knowing that people don't have family to spend the holidays with.

We celebrate thanksgiving because of the pilgrims that came to the united states. All of our families get together and We get really good food that our parents prep for u for hours. It's fun to help as well. I love making the mash potatoes. Its one of the things i do every thanksgiving and they come out super good. I also make the turn ups and stuffing. I wake up at 6:30am on every thanksgiving to help my parents make one of the best dishes of the year. Even tho i could barely walk at the end of the day it's totally worth it.

This thanksgiving it was a good one, we all sat down to watch football and we all had a great time. We were all laughing and having fun. It's nice to actually have a good conversation until one gets drunk and passes out before the food is done. My family is crazy but no matter what ill always love them and i'll never trade them for the world. They all do so much for me and i am thankful for all of them

  3. My favorite story was “A possum. In the pie.” This is my favorite story because I️ was just imagining it and laughing because the whole this is so funny. The fact that she thought it would be a good idea to leave the pie outside at all is hilarious. And when she described her face it was relatable because that would’ve been my face too haha. Me and my family celebrate Thanksgiving because it’s tradition. Thanksgiving to me is when me and my family can have one day together to appreciate each other besides all of the fights we get into and we can spend quality time together. A “snapshot” of my Thanksgiving is pretty simple. My mom and aunt woke up way way way too early. I️ think they woke up at like 7am. All day we had the Thanksgiving Day Parade on and once I woke up I️ helped them cook. We had our family come over at like 5pm and once they all came an hour after we ate. We went around and said why we’re thankful for each other and eventually everybody started to cry haha. It was great family bonding. I️ think that this Thanksgiving was most memorable for me just because I’m older now and I️ can appreciate it more.

  4. My favorite story is “My mother couldn’t stand the idea of anyone eating pizza for Thanksgiving” because the lady was so nice. Here she was taking three people and feeding them a full dinner of Thanksgiving. Most people I know wouldn’t do that many people would just look and walk past them. It was nice how they spent the day playing board games with the family and they watched football as well. When the dinner was done they were nice enough to help out with the dishes and help clean up.
I celebrate Thanksgiving because I want to share a nice dinner with who I am thankful for. Thanksgiving is also a time for appreciating the great things in your life. To me it means spending time with family or people I’m grateful/thankful for. Also to think of how lucky I am to have a warm house with food served to me. Some people aren’t as lucky as I am and I should appreciate that. Our thanksgiving is usually hosted by one of my uncles or aunts. We go over there house and it is usually all my dads family which I don’t mind. We have so much food on dinner. We have turkey, stuffing, cranberries, mashed potatoes, crescents, vegetables, and much more food. Before we eat we say grace and then the whole family digs in. After dinner we sit back talk and watch some football games. My family is very calm so it’s always a pleasant time. This Thanksgiving was very similar to past ones. We had some minor changes but it was pretty much the same. Our family likes to keep things very simple. That way we don’t over complicate it. When we do extra things thats when problems can arrive. I like it that way because my motto is this, “Peace and quiet is the way to go.” I love myself peace and quiet, just to sit down and relax and knowing there isn’t anything to worry about.

  5. My favorite story out of all of them was My mom couldn’t stand the idea of anyone eating pizza for thanksgiving. I like it the most because i would do the same thing. If i saw some marines that are about to eat pizza on thanksgiving i would offer them to eat at my house for dinner. I also liked it because it was a nice thing to do by giving them a thanksgiving dinner. I liked the first story because I can relate to this story because my mom cooks for a small army just like the mom in the story. Finally I enjoyed it because I thought it was funny how they helped with the dishes and cleaning.
I celebrate thanksgiving because of the history behind it and because of all the that you get to eat during the day. I think that the holiday is a day of being thankful to everyone that has helped you through everything. Such as you family mostly your parents and friends. I also believe that it's a day of blessing for having a meal. Lastly it's about the history that happened and that's why we celebrate the day of thanking.
My most memorable moment was when my entire family came to one place to have a great time. Since all my family doesn't live in new jersey it was a special moment for all of us. I actually met some people that i haven't met before like some of my cousins. I had a fun time eating with my family and talking. Then we played some games and then all watched a movie. Before eating every did there prayers and said what they are thankful for so i thought that was really cool and nice. We also had contests with the men vs the women with sports and other things. That is one thanksgiving that i will never forget and it is my most memorable moment because of the family the food and the amazing time i had.

  6. My favorite story would be the possum in the pie. I like this one because it is almost like you could predict was going to happen right when they put the pie outside. My family celebrates Thanksgiving because it brings our family together. We see family members that we haven’t seen in awhile. And it is always a fun time for everyone. To me the holiday is like any other day except all my cousins aunts and uncles are over and having a good time. There’s never really a dull moment on Thanksgiving were you are not laughing or smiling. On thanksgiving my family comes over we eat dinner and desert together and have many laughs. Everyone shares funny stories that always make my family laugh until they start crying. Every year thanksgiving changes, usually a couple people can't make it. And it kind of sucks because i look forward to seeing all my cousins and family members but it's still a fun and eventful night. Usually the location of Thanksgiving changes every year. It’ll be at everyone's house at least once. Everyone will bring their own dish whether it’s for dinner or desert. All the cousins are at one table in one room and the adults in another. And then at desert we all go to the one table and that’s when all the stories are told and all the laughs are happening. Someone will always tell the same story every year but somehow it never gets old. I remember one year someone was laughing so much that they couldn’t tell their story because they were laughing. Everyone always asks the kids how they are doing in school and they will talk about that for a little. Sometimes we will celebrate someone's birthday that recently passed. Some of my cousins will spend the night and some years we would stay up all night just fooling around and talking to each other.

    1. I agree with John on the pizza issue. It's a tradition to eat turkey and other things on Thanksgiving. In my opinion everyone should be to have especially if you served for our country. Our location changes sometimes to but our family makes it work and it seems like your family makes it work too.

  7. I agree with John because you shouldn’t eat pizza for Thanksgiving its not the right thing to do. Thanksgiving is a time when your family cooks and everyone comes over and has a good time.I also agreed with him when he said we should be thankful for everybody who helped us to be the person we are today. Without family guiding you in the right direction you can be somewhere you don’t want to be.So i'm very thankful

  8. My favorite story was ‘My mother couldn’t stand the idea of anyone eating pizza for Thanksgiving’ that one is my favorite because she didn't have to invite them to eat thanksgiving with her and her family but she did. And not a lot of people would do that that shows that she has a good heart and cares about other people. That's why that one is my favorite story. Thanksgiving means to me a day that all my family comes together without fighting and we can all be thankful for everything we have. Also i get to spend the day with people i care about most and i get to sit at a table with them and share all the food. And i just love that thanksgiving is special to me for that reason and also all the good food i get to eat and leftovers i love it. My thanksgiving was different this year i wasn't with my whole family. I was in north carolina it wasn't my favorite thanksgiving because i didn't get to share it with everyone i loved i would have liked it a lot better if i was with my mom and brother and sister but i'm still thankful i got to see my aunt i haven't seen in two years. So it wasn't all bad and the food was really good we spent the whole day watching our favorite movies which was great
