  1. The meaning of this quote is that the hate in one person, this means that this can not be defeated by hate it needs to be conquered by love and peace. You cannot bring hate and hate into a relationship because in order for the relationship to work you need love too. Its like a double negative you cant have two negative words in the same sentence it just doesn't work you need a word that can push back on the negative word. This quote can relate to our nation today because our nation in the time we are in not there is still a lot of hate but we have also learned to throw a bit of love in the mix between the hate; hate relation ship to keep everything equal. This quote is still relevant because so many people look back on the things MLK jr. once said and this quote was one of the big ones in his fight to gain equal rights for between both blacks and whites.

    1. I agree with what you said about love and peace. Also, I believe that every one should have equal rights. I think the quote is still relevant too. And your response was really good.

  2. TO me hate and darkness are the same thing, so if you look at it they do the exact same thing, nothing. The lead down the same road. People hated colored people so they thought using them as slavery and treating them wrong would solve the problem. Martin Luther King Jr. was right when he said this. When we started to see that color is the same as whites we started to see light push the darkness back. This relates to todays nation because colored people I would say is giving whites revenge from what happened with the comments they say now. This quote is relevant to today because it shows people that only nice things are the only way to resolve anything. Harsh words can dull people's day if said to afend them.

    1. Nick, in your opinion hate and darkness are well foreseen they both have similar meanings and both are interpreted as the same and to me that is fifty, fifty because hate is kind of like darkness because hate is the way someone feels about someone and shows how much they dont like that person which is a dark way.

  3. To me this quote means that light can always fix things, if you’re going through a tough time something better will come along trust me. Love can fix hate by trust and believing, love can fix a lot of things. You can be there for a person and that’s love and light, you could donate money that’s light and etc. If you hate something and hates you back nothing will come good out of it, you won’t learn love or anything. If there is something bad going on and bad things keep piling up, there will be no light either. This relates to segregation and the civil rights by the blacks and whites being separated, that was darkness in their lives for the blacks. Then King Jr. came around and brought light, love but also darkness because police killed innocent black people. This quote relates to gay rights being legalized in 2015, that brought love to their partners and darkness turned into light and that makes this quote still relevant.

  4. The quote "Darkness cannot drive out darkness only light can do that, hate cannot drive out hate only love can do it" by Martin Luther King Jr. meant that both the darkness and hate are evil things. One cannot erase the other. Only good things can destroy the darkness and hate. The white people did not like the colored people and treated them badly. They had to have separate bathrooms, schools, drinking fountains and even had to be told where they could sit on a bus. They whites thought they did a good thing by abolishing slavery, but the colored people still did not have real freedom. During the civil rights they started to get a little freedom when some white people started to see the light. It was a up hill battle but soon they were able to go to the same schools white people did. They eventually got to vote. This quote is relevant today because colored people are still trying to being treated fairly. Their is still hate out there in all races. They keep fighting amongst each other. It shouldn't matter your skin color or what country you came from. People should always try to get along instead of hating one another.

  5. i think this quote is trying to say that love is the only thing that fights hate, and responding to hate and odasity. more hate only perpetuates the cycle, it won't defeat the hateful people or make them change their minds. As a minister, King was probably inspired by the Christian "love your enemy". Even when he was attacked as a civil rights leader, King never responded with anger as some of the others in the movement did, and encouraged his followers to use peaceful non-violent disobedience rather than armed resistance to fight injustice. That's what i think he meant.

  6. The words of Martin Luther King are his words, and thoughts. They have followed him through the years, and are still very important in todays world. "Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that". To me this means that in the world today, people have to start looking at each other with respect, and not the color of their skin. There is so much violence because of racial unrest, that is why so many riots, and protests have erupted in the night, but when the daytime comes, people go home, think about what happened, and either go back out to protest, or stay at home to think about what really is happening. That is where the light breaks through the darkness, and lets people think about the fact that everyone matters. "Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that". If you want to carry hate, and anger with you your whole life, you will be a very unhappy person. We have to stop and think about what is going on. Start understanding why people do what they do, and respect them for their beliefs. This may not be what you believe in, but if you give it time and effort, the love we should share for one another, can and will shine through. Race relationship today, are in some instances, better than it was in the 1960, 70, 80, 90 up until 2016. In the south segregation was always worse than in then north. This was in part, what the Civil War was about. The civil rights movement in our world will always be an ongoing effort on the part of all of us. Although in some parts of this country, civil rights are better than others, this along with other important issues in our world will forever be a part of our lives, and other lives in the future. Martin Luther King was not looking for a fix for civil rights, he was rather looking for us to look at each other with equality and kindness, letting the light shine through. He just wanted all people of all color to exist in this world, and not be split or segregated anywhere, anytime. Martin Luther King was a smart man, and he even said in a speech" I have a dream", which makes me think he knew this was a long hard road we have to travel, and care for each other as we move forward.
