  1. Martin Luther King Jr. once said “Darkness cannot drive out darkness only light can do that, hate cannot drive out hate only love can do that”. I think Martin Luther King Jr. is one-hundred percent correct. Let me break the quote in half. The first part is “Darkness cannot drive out darkness only light can do that…” For example, if you are in a dark room you can't add more darkness to it, you can only add light. This goes for all the people in the 1930s. They couldn't add more darkness to what was already happening. They just had to accept it and try to be positive and eventually it would be better. Then, the next part, “...hate cannot drive out hate only love can do that.” You can't get rid of hate unless you add love into the equation. This part also refers to all the people in the 1930s. Most of the blacks and whites definitely hated each other and sadly there was no love. The whites hated the blacks just because of their skin color, but the blacks probably hated the whites because of the way they were treated. This quote reminds me of another one,“Don't fight fire with fire.” You can add more hate, but don't expect it to just turn into love without getting rid of it first. Everyone had to keep fighting until the government added the love, but even after that there is still a little hate.
I think this quote still refers to our nation today by the way people act. Unfortunately, there are people in America that are still racist. These people hate other people just because of their race. I know there are people out there who still wish that segregation was still a thing. I definitely don't agree with these types of people.I also think this quote is still relevant today. I think that you can even apply this quote to any situation in your life. You just have to find a way out of the hole you are in, instead of digging deeper.

  2. Martin Luther King Jr. once said “Darkness cannot drive out darkness only light can do that, hate cannot drive out hate only love can do that”. I think that this quote is saying that the only way to get rid of the bad is by fighting it with good. The only way to drive away the bad things in life is by overcoming it with the goodness in life. You need the light and brightness in life to get rid of the darkness coming your way. This quote is related to segregation and the civil rights movement because it describes how the blacks felt during this time. They were treated unfairly from the whites and knew that the discrimination had to stop. The blacks wanted to be treated equal with all whites without war and fighting going on. They had to stay happy during this time even though it was hard dealing with being racially profiled all the time. So being kind and loving each other no matter what race or nationality was the only way to keep the dark and bad feelings away.
I think this quote relates to our nation today because their is still racial profiling going around and is coming together and being kind to one another keeps the bad and other racial problems behind. People still need to remember to stay happy even though that racial profiling is still a big problem going around today all around the world. I think that this quote is still relevant today because we all feel this way when something bad happens, If something sad happens to you and it’s really bringing you down, you still look to all the positive sides in your life to keep you happy. Thinking on the positive side keeps the darkness from fully taking over us and making us depressed. We all look to happiness and positivity to keep us in the light. So this quote is still important to always remember in our own lives. People today still think this away about life to keep positivity in them instead of just the negative taking over their path to happiness and good thoughts.

  3. What i think the quote “Darkness cannot drive out darkness only light can do that, hate cannot drive out hate only love can do that” by Martin Luther King Jr. is that you can’t drive hatred out using more hatred. You should change your attitude and spread that attitude around to help change everyone and get rid of the hatred. The loving attitude will spread from person to person if people get rid of their hatred and help see the good side towards things. Darkness in a room cannot be driven out of a room by using darkness, but a light can light a room up and get rid of the darkness, just like how hatred in someone cannot be driven out of someone by using hatred. Using hatred will just cause more problems and will spread those problems, but by using love, you can destroy those problems and relieve everyone from their anger and make everyone happy. For example, in the 1930’s, the whites and blacks hated each other. All they did was hate and the whites would always discriminate the blacks. They just kept using hate and kept adding hatred to their problems, which caused more and more problems to form between the two. They two never showed love to each other and never really accepted one another, so the problems between the two never got fixed. This is until Martin Luther King Jr. began to show love to the whites and wanted the two to accept each other. Martin Luther King Jr. always showed his love and never showed any hatred. With that love, he fixed the society and got rid of segregation by making everyone know they are all equal and should express love and not hatred. This quote relates to our nation today because most whites and blacks are accepting each other. There are still some people that still believe the blacks should be discriminated, but that is just their opinion and what they think is right. Every person has their own beliefs and opinions, and people are allowed to express them. This quote is still relevant but not fully. There are still those people that believe that whites and blacks shouldn’t accept each other. Those people still express hatred and show no love to them. Hatred is what causes the problems in our society and what helps strengthen that problem. If people can just show some love and acceptance, that problem and be conquered and help society be a better place.

    1. I agree with what hunter says. Using hatred is not going to help stop it. It's just going to encourage more hatred and make it worse. Also, how segregation still exist today.

    2. Hunter, i completely agree with you, Two wrongs dont make a right, so using hatred to try and solve the hatred will only make things worse. With all the politics going on, segregation is getting worse, and the levels of discrimination are getting higher against different religions.

  4. Martin Luther King Jr. once said “Darkness cannot drive out darkness only light can do that, hate cannot drive out hate only love can do that.” I think this quote means that you cannot overthrow something with the same thing. If it’s dark, “adding” more darkness won’t make it light out. It will only make things darker. The only way to drive out darkness is with light leading the way. In the 1930’s, they couldn’t drive all of the darkness from the Great Depression by adding hurtful and displeasing things to make it seem “better” when they are actually far worse than that. The colored were still being discriminated after slavery had been abolished, and making them feel hated wasn’t making the situation any better. That was making the room darker and no light was able to shine through. The colored had to stay positive despite what was happening around them. For example, extremely low pay, discrimination, food shortages and no education. The colored held their heads high and eventually they came to be equal to the whites. The second part of the quote means that you can’t have love by adding more hate. You have to substitute love for hate to make things seem brighter and happier for all. The second part ties in to the first when saying that things only get worse before they get better. When slavery started, it was pretty bad and when slavery was abolished, things started looking up again. Unfortunately after that, discrimination and lynching became a thing that was constantly happening. Then, the Great Depression and only after all of those hard times, things finally got better for the colored.
I do think that this quote relates to our nation today. Sadly, there is still racial profiling and discrimination going for all colors, races, and genders. This quote is still extremely relevant to people in society today. Take gay marriage for example. Gay marriage was really frowned upon and barely anyone supported it, mostly people said that men were supposed to be with women, and that women were supposed to be with men. After a while, people were more accepting about the fact that if you love someone, you should be with that person and nothing should hold you back. Then, gay marriage was legalized showing that even in times of darkness, light finds a way to shine through and make a situation better.

  6. Martin Luther King Jr.’s quote “Darkness cannot drive out darkness only light can do that, hate cannot drive out hate only love can do that.” means that you couldn’t make discrimination and segregation stop by hating white people, they could only change it by getting them to realize what they were doing. It wasn’t just wrong, it was inhumane. So to keep things simple I am just going to use the terms white and black. Even though his quote was meant for the civil rights movement, it doesn’t just apply to racial conflicts, it can be used in any conflict you have to deal with. Discrimination ended when whites realized that they were equal with blacks, and no life was worth any more than the others. So Martin was saying not to riot, but to protest peacefully, and maybe someone will notice that black and white are the same. So obviously adding darkness to an already dark place will not change it, because it is already dark. Only light can make a difference to the place if enough light is added. Without the analogies it means hate will continue if it is left alone, and in the civil rights era, that is not an easy thing for blacks to do since the whites have historically treated blacks unimaginably bad, that blacks no longer see them as people they can possibly get along with. If blacks fight hate with hate there will be no lasting accomplishments, because whites will just get back at blacks in another way. I’m sure many people saw this, but no one had the leader skills to show the way to end discrimination. Hate can only last if you continue to be hateful. If blacks turned from hate and started to be loving, it will change the scene. Whites will no longer have a reason to hate blacks , and it basically becomes pointless for them to hate. And that can go for all races, it doesn’t just apply to one blacks. This quote definitely still still relates to country today because hate crimes still happen, and they are dealt with (most of the time) unbiased judgement. So to finish the thought, the way to end hate is to use love and to not continue to add to the darkness.

  7. The quote Martin Luther King once stated “Darkness cannot drive out darkness only light can do that, hate cannot drive out hate only love can do that” makes a lot of sense. Of course, this was pertaining to the civil rights movement against segregation. But, honestly, this could go for anything. He said ‘Darkness cannot drive out darkness only light can do that’ this is pretty much an analogy to love and hate, which is said next, but I will explain this now. If a dark room has an opening with more dark and no light coming through it, no light will be there. Pretty simple! But, with the next words ‘hate cannot drive out hate only love can do that’ makes it senseful. If two people hate each other, they won’t suddenly like each other and be friends. But, to drive out that hate, if one of the guys starts being nice (which is like the love part), then maybe the other will give in and be friends. That’s the normal perspective. Now, let's get into how it goes with the civil rights movement.
By saying hate can’t drive out hate, it’s simple. Martin Luther King always led peaceful things. This means that instead of blacks showing they want equality by breaking things and killing people (how the whites showed hate to them), they should do peaceful things and not hurt anyone, showing love. His hope was that maybe one day, the whites will understand that and show love back. And that’s what did happen. The whole black community fought in a peaceful way, and the whites, although slowly, eventually did give blacks FULL equal rights. If they had fought hate with hate, by hurting people, and committing acts of violence, they would be nowhere. Martin Luther King was a very smart man. He knew exactly how to solve such a big problem like this, and didn’t hurt one soul doing it. He lead everyone in a respectful way, and a productive way. This quote explains nearly all of it.

  8. Martin Luther King Jr., one of America’s greatest man, said “Darkness cannot drive out darkness only light can do that, hate cannot drive out hate only love can do that”. What this quote means is that if something bad is happening, another bad thing isn’t going to fix it, something good has to happen before the problem can be solved. When he is talking about light and love driving out darkness and hate, he trying to say that people need to fight on. He wants people to push through their lows because there's only so low you can go before you hit rock bottom, then things can start looking up for you, and the”darkness” and “hate” will be driven out by your “light” and “love”. This quote can relate to the segregation in the 1930’s because people realized that things would get better but not by their hate to whites. They realized that if they used love and peace in their peace walks instead of dark and hateful violent riots. Hence the reason for the line “Darkness cannot drive out drakness only light can do that” the colored people of the South had to be the light in this siituation. They had to be the change becaused the whites were stubbern in their hating ways. So when Martin Luther King Jr, said “Darkness cannot drive out darkness only light can do that, hate cannot drive out hate only love can do that” he means to say that something positive is needed to bring a negitive situation into a positive solution. For example if your in a room with no lights on the only way to see is if you turn the lights on. When you do that you can finally see, this shows that darkness cannot drive outdarkness only when you turn on a light can you see in the room.

  9. Martin Luther King Jr. once said “Darkness cannot drive out darkness only light can do that, hate cannot drive out hate only love can do that”. This quote could speak a thousand words. The beginning of the quote “Darkness cannot drive out darkness only light can do that…” means that you can’t defeat the problem with another problem, you need the solution. An example would be the civil rights movement, when the whites were discriminating against the blacks, by not going to the same schools, churches, barber shops, restaurants, almost everywhere as the blacks. Martin Luther King Jr. wanted the blacks to fight back, but not do the same as the whites were. He did not want riots, fighting, or discrimination of the whites. He wanted equality and justice. He wanted them to do good, destroy with light, not with darkness. The second part of the quote “...hate cannot drive out hate only love can do that” Has almost the same exact meaning, but I believe this part was talking about The Great Depression. The Great Depression was the deepest and longest lasting economic downturn in the history of the world. It all started when the stock markets crashed and it went downhill from there. People were becoming nomadic wandering the streets looking for jobs, having no money for shelter, food, clothes, and everything. Martin Luther King Jr. was saying we should fight hate with love. That would should find the good in a bad situation.
This quote relates to our nation in many ways. Black and white people everyday are discriminated over the color of their skin. Today, it is illegal to discriminate against color of skin or gender, it is called a hate crime. Now because of it we have Obama, Michael Jackson, famous professional athletes, and more important people. Today this quote is relevant to when just last year gay marriage became legal in the United States. Many people were being discriminated for being gay all around the world. For years men were supposed to be with women, and women were supposed to be with men. It has all changed, people now can now be the person they love without being discriminated for it. It has made our world a better place to live and love.

  10. Martin Luther King Jr. once said “Darkness cannot drive out darkness only light can do that, hate cannot drive out hate only love can do that”. This quote can mean a lot of different things but in my opinion, I think it means being positive can get rid of negative things, but being negative can’t get rid of negative things it only makes it worse. Therefore if there is darkness you can’t get rid of it by adding more darkness, you can only get rid of it by adding lightness. People think that if you are sad and you add more sadness to it, it won’t make a difference since you are already sad, however this is not the case. If you want to stop being sad you have to try to think happy. This is what the blacks did during segregation, they weren’t happy that they were constantly getting picked on, but they tried to make it better. They didn’t sit back and say “it’s not going to get any better” and whine about it. Instead they added light to the darkness by standing up and protesting. People like Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr. stood up for the blacks and tried to put an end to it. They thought about segregation ending and thought happy instead of being sad and making it worse. This quote relates to our nation today because many people are cruel and mean and make others feel bad. However, they are often mean to others because they are mad. They shouldn’t be mean though because now the bully and the person bullied is mad and they will be mean to each other, and this adds more hate instead of adding happiness. Another example is when our economy is doing bad and it is in “darkness”. People complain, but don’t do anything to make the economy better. You have to give our economy some light if you want it to stop doing bad and get out of its dark stage. If we all work together and try to make the economy better, there is a good chance it will get out of the “darkness stage.” Therefore when people are sad they just have to think of something that makes them happy because that’s how you stop being sad.

  11. Martin Luther King Jr. once said “Darkness cannot drive out darkness only light can do that, hate cannot drive out hate only love can do that”. This quote means that if you do the same things over and over, nothing is going to change. If you add darkness to more darkness, it will only get darker. No light will ever shine through The same thing with our souls. The more hate you bring in the less love will show. There are people around the world who cannot drive the darkness out of themselves. For example, the Jewish boy who took a video of a homeless man getting scorching hot coffee on top of his head for money is one of the types of people. The boy saw this homeless man as a target and saw that he was poor and bribed him with money. He saw this man as not one of his equals but treated him as gum on the bottom of his shoe. This example is an act of discrimination and shows that not everyone follows the rle as “all men are created equal.”

Like this, the same discrimination and segregation happened but worse. Blacks weren't even allowed to use the same things as the whites. They had separate water fountains, schools, did not sit near each other on busses and whites can't use the same books as coloreds. Martin Luther King was very optimistic about the Civil Rights Movement. Even though his friends and family were being discriminated against he pushed through and kept his head high. He fought his hardest to drive out all of the darkness around the world, all of the hatred for his “kind.” He did it for love because he felt love was the strongest thing in the world. It kept the world in one peace. He saw that all men were not created equal and changed it. Thanks to Martin Luther King Jr. most people all over the world see each other as equals instead of seeing each other for skin color.

  12. Martin Luther King Jr. once said “Darkness cannot drive out darkness only light can do that, hate cannot drive out hate only love can do that”. In this quote Martin Luther King Jr. says that you cannot stop something wrong by doing something just as wrong. To fix something negative you cannot be negative in response, you have to respond positively to make it right. If people do something wrong and they are countered with something just as bad it won’t fix the issue. It’s human nature to hit back whenever you are hit but if the other side is being peaceful it makes both sides happier. This relates to segregation in America a lot. When the whites were keeping blacks separate from whites with worse conditions it obviously made the blacks mad. They all wanted change so they banded together. Instead of going into the streets and responding with violence Martin Luther King Jr. led people peacefull. If they were violent in their gatherings it would only make the whites more hateful and not solve any problems. It would make the situation worse for both parties. Martin Luther King Jr. was smart and knew violence would do nothing. He led peaceful protests asking for change and that’s what he received. Eventually segregation was changed and in the end removed completely. In America today sometimes groups of people get mad over events. An example would be controversial police shootings. People who were made angry by the shooting sometimes violently protested. The violence made some people mad and only hurt the community. It hurt the businesses and bystanders and didn’t help the problem at all. If people are peaceful with their protests then it will help the problem. All they need to do is fight darkness with light and combat wrong with right. People always say two wrongs don’t make a write which is exactly what Martin Luther King Jr. meant with this quote. If people listened to this quote the world would be really peaceful.

  13. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “darkness cannot drive out of darkness only light can do that, hate cannot drive out hate only love can do that.” This quote means that you in order to get out of a negative situation, you must find a positive situation to drive it out of you head and out of your life. If you add more negative things i to a situation, you’ll more than likely make it worse because add to it makes it worse than anything else. However, if you add light into the situation, it makes it better. For example, If you’re lost in a cave with nothing to help you get through it, how do you get out? You cannot add darkness to it because that’ll only make it worse for you. If you suddenly find a way to light a torch to help you get out, it helps the situation rather than hurting and making it worse. Thus leading you to figure out that finding a positive attitude can help you out of negative situations. This quote relates to segregation and the civil rights movement because the blacks were hated by the whites. the only way that could be fixed was with love, and that had to be done over time. Sadly, It was just the way of thinking back then. During segregation, it was already a dark time. Adding to that situation would help much since the blacks were already trying to get out of what they were already in.
This quote relates to our nation today because some hatred and darkness is still going on in America. It's quite sad when you think about it, America still having hatred for certain things. Honestly, why does hate even exist? Even though it does exist, America has a hatred for many different races if people. For example, if an American sees a Muslim while they are in public, they automatically think they're a terrorist. Not all Muslims are terrorists. It's just the way we think now, unfortunately. We tend to jump ahead of ourselves when we don't even know a person, but we know the reputation of their race. Its sad, but true. I do think this quote is relevant because it tends to tell you that even in darks times, you have to look for that little dash of light to lead you out of it. What the blacks needed in 1930 was a little dash of light to help get them through. In conclusion, light helps solve the darkest of situations.

  14. “Darkness cannot drive out darkness only light can do that, hate cannot drive out hate only love can do that” is a quote once said by Martin Luther King Jr. I think this quote means when you are in the presence of something bad, you can’t drive it out with more bad but only with more good. Attempting to drive it out with more bad will only make it worse. When you bring something good into the picture, the bad will decrease or diminish. An example of this is if someone came from a troubled family and decided to join a gang and get involved with illegal activity. They are trying to drown out the hate from family with rebellious acts and hateful actions because they may not be happy with their current life. It won’t help though; if anything this confused and lost person is making it worse. What they should do is surround them with people and good influences who love them, like a friend. I can relate this to segregation because hate from black people won’t drive out hate from white people and vice versa. This would only cause their hatred to escalate. If one or the other (or even both) showed forgiveness and compassion, everyone would get along better and there would be peace. This quote relates to our nation because our nation is more understanding than other nations. The quote is still relevant because although it’s not completely rid of hate, we have a better grasp of loving one another.

  15. Martin Luther King Jr. once said “Darkness cannot drive out darkness only light can do that, hate cannot drive out hate only love can do that”. I think this quote means we can’t keep hating on one thing and expect it to go away because we hate it so much. We have to simply say ok, keep an eye out, ignore it, and just go on with your life. The quote is also saying that love is the answer because hatred and darkness will destroy our world. We have to unite as one, settle our differences and learn to love everyone and realize everyone/ everything has a purpose. This can very easily relate to segregation in the 1930’s because the blacks wanted to be equal with the whites without fighting, or any conflict. When the whites ignored the idea more conflicts starting arising between the two racial groups. After slavery was abolished the poor blacks still suffered and were still in a dark place trying to make light. They faced discrimination, and they tried to get rid of it. One way was Martin Luther King Jr. giving speeches and movements.
If the whites could’ve tried to be civil I think history would have changed everything about today. This quote doesn’t relate to our world today because we have people trying to hate on cops for being over cruel to the black people being arrested and beaten. All I will put on the internet is that cops are doing their jobs to try and keep our communities safe, if you are being arrested there is a good reason for it. If cops are going over the top crazy they have cameras in there cars to prove it and they can lose their jobs. Black lives do matter, and so do everyone else's. I think is quote is still relevant because we do have people trying to fix the hatred and the brawl with peace and love. Everyone should be fighting hatred with peace and love in our world today because our problems in our nation will only weaken us and put us into a darker place and trying to find light will be even harder.

  16. Martin Luther King Jr. once said “Darkness cannot drive out darkness only light can do that, hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that.” This quote means that with love, you can cure the hate and negativity but with the hate piling up, it doesn’t solve the problem. It reminds me of when people say “two wrongs don’t make a right.” The negativity will only continue if you keep adding to it, when you add in positivity people start to see that and turn the negativity from hate into love. It only takes one person to start the change. This quote relates to segregation because the hate for black people kept growing and growing until people like Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks and even Malcom X stood up to those people. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream Speech” made a really big impact with ending segregation. Without the blacks standing up, Segregation would still be going on today. The blacks are still discriminated against each other, just not as much as they were back then. People are so caught up with just giving hate and not giving any support. It’s like giving love costs someone so much to do, and unless they are going to be recognized for it, they aren’t going to do it. All people care about today is publicity and if they don’t get the publicity, they won’t do a single thing to help someone out. With how the way this world works today, this quote isn’t relevant because of the amount of people in this world who are selfish. To give kindness, a lot of people will only do it if they know they are going to get rewarded. It honestly sickens me to say it, but there will always be some type of segregation between everyone. No matter who you are, what religion you practice, or what race you are, no one can ever get along. There’s always that one person who thinks they are better than someone else, and that’s the person who ruins it for us.

  17. Martin Luther King Jr once said “Darkness cannot drive out darkness only light can do that, hate cannot drive out hate only love can do that.” I think this means when there is a problem or something bad happens another bad thing will not fix it. You have to do positive things to fix negative things. You can not be negative or do negative things to fix a bad problem. You have to do positive things to fix it. You can not keep doing negative things that just makes everything worse. You can’t get rid of darkness with more darkness. You have to add light to get rid of it. He is trying to say even when people are at their lowest you can’t keep being negative. That will never help you have to pick yourself up and think about the positives and if there aren’t any make some. You have to be positive about everything you can’t keep making excuses for all of your mistakes. You will always be in that darkness then. You should work hard at everything that you do and you will get into that light. This quote even relates to the civil rights movement because the blacks were in the darkness and they couldn’t keep doing bad things to fix it. They kept protesting until that got their way. They never did go out of their way to go hurt other people.
This quote can even relate to our nation today. For example like the riots in Baltimore that didn’t help much. People were mad and decided to do another negative thing and riot. They caused a lot of issues and it just didn’t turn out well. Martin Luther King Jr had peaceful protest instead of riots. He got his message through a lot better doing that then having a riot. You have to do good things to get rid of bad things. You can’t keep rioting to get rid of issues because that is a negative thing. You have to find a good solution not a bad one.

  19. The quote, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness only light can do that, hate cannot drive out hate only love can do that” said by Martin Luther King Jr can mean many things. In my personal opinion the quote is saying that darkness can’t drive out problems only shining light on the situation can and hate can’t drive out hate, it can only be done by love. This quote can relate to segregation in many ways first off, by being cruel and mean to black people it wasn’t going to drive them away. Basically you were just being mean for no reason at all you hated them and treated them poorly based on a color. By being mean you thought you could get rid of them, but in reality you just needed some light. Maybe if somebody was nice and said kind words people would leave. For example, I’m sure if you asked Rosa Parks nicely to move her seat she would have, you didn’t have to scream at her and throw her in jail for saying no for you asking her rudely. Also, by you hating on somebody so much it’s not going to drive them away. For instance, I’m sure the blacks hated the whites as much as they hated them but by everybody hating everybody, was that really going to do anything? No it wasn’t that’s why people say “kill them with kindness.” It’s the best way to go you can’t drive out hate with hate but by loving your enemies you can.
This quote relates greatly to our nation today. I mean not so much with race but with other things or topics. For instance, I’m sure there our kids who hate each other. It’s most likely for a stupid reason if I’m going to be honest. However, these kids probably think by being cruel and dark to each other it’s going to solve anything. Little do they know it’s actually making the situation worse, they are putting all their energy into hating somebody. When in reality they could just shine some light in the situation and have the problem solved. Also, that situation could be applied to the other part of the quote as well. For instance, say two girls hate each other over a stupid reason, like a boy for say. They will spend all this time being mean to each other and hating on each other over a boy, thinking they’re going to solve the problem. The problem is they can’t fix anything with hate, only love can do that. If you can love the person you hate you’re a bigger person than most. I think this quote is still extremely relevant, it can be related to so many topics especially in most people’s personal life. It has a very unique message that many people probably don’t think of. All in all, this quote is truly amazing and everybody needs to read it and understand its importance it has in society today.

  20. Martin Luther King Jr once said ‘’Darkness cannot drive out darkness only light can do that, hate cannot drive out hate only love can do that’’. What this quote mean is that you can get rid of something by adding more to it. Meaning if you get rid of it just let it go without adding more onto it. For example in the 1930’s when segregation was happening blacks and whites did not get along. And they couldn't stop hating each other because they just kept hating on each other never ever stopping. That is what Martin luther king means in this quote. Also, when rosa parks got arrested because she was sitting in the front of a bus. This shows that if people don't stop hatred it will continue, and this is a prime example of why. This still continues today in our communities. It is known as racism and not segregation. it isn't the same. it is just discrimination against people's race. People know a days are just racist to people and hate them for what color skin he or she has. It is really just unnecessary. There is just no reason for it, and yes martin ,luther king jr's quote does relate to this because this racism won't stop in they you all stop doing it. if we don't stop it doesn't go away. it's a simple concept. For example, last year in 2015 there was a riot in Baltimore. I am not sure what about and i really don't want to know because it just disgusts me but i am pretty sure it was about discrimination against black people. And the black people got mad about this. This caused a riot and just made racism and discrimination stay around longer. if we stop it will stop happening around the world and around communities. I do think that martin luther king jr's quote does help people really see how pointless and unnecessary racism, segregation, and discrimination is.

    1. Tristian I agree with you. It was inhumane to discriminate and segregate people from each other. This is what Martin Luther King meant in this quote to stop segregation.

  22. Another examples is when you're on a team. When you make light of an error or a mistake you can play better because of it. But if you look at the negative side it will make you play worse. This is what this quote means to me.

  23. Martin Luther King Jr. once said”Darkness cannot drive out darkness only light can do that, hate cannot drive out hate only love can do that”.This quote means that in order to stop something bad you can’t stop it with something else bad. This means that you can’t stop someone from hating you by hating them back. You have to to be friendly to them and be nice to them. You have to reason with hate and not fight it with even more hate.Hate on top of hate just makes more and hate and nothing ever gets solved. In order to stop a fight you can’t fight it with the same fight they are fighting you with. You have to make friends with your enemies. You have to talk to and solve the issue with them. This relates to the civil rights movement in the 1960s.In order to stop segregation Martin Luther King JR went on a peaceful protest so that the people could understand and relate to him.He didn’t provoke violencew to fight segregation he provoked speaking out peacefully protesting just as Mahatma Gandhi did when fighting for Indian independence.Martin Luther King’s way of protesting and fighting segregation worked becuase he didn’t put hate on top of hate.He didn’t promote violence and rioting,he promoted for the people to unite and to march about the situation.Martin Luther stopped segregation and stopped widespread racism across the country. This can go with everyday situations as well.It can go with having someone bullying you at school. Its hard to reslove an issue if you just fight the bully back.Instead you should try to reason with him and talk him or her out of bullying other people.Nothing is ever solved if you just keep putting hate or darkness on a situation. You have to work your way out of it and not always fight it.You have to be smart and can’t be throwing darkness into darkness. You have to find light or love, not hate.
