  2. I believe what the meaning behind this quote is that even the happiest people in the world can be sad. That the fearless people can still have fear in inside them. This quote means that no matter how good you ar there is something that can break you. The best people that are willing to take risks, the discipline to the tell the truth, have something that can hurt them. I know someone who was carefree and had the best time with their lives. But something in their past made them kind of shut down. They stop making jokes in class, their grades went down, and they stopped talking in general. But later on I see them get back in touch with their old self and have fun and had stopped being depressed. I later found out it was the anniversary of their love one death. So yes, even the brightest, happiness, and careless people had something in their lives change them for a while or forever. A character that we are reading in the story can relate to the quote. His name is Moshe. Moshe is a character in the novel Night, he is the first character we meet. In the beginning he is a happy, friendly, and kind of person. He helps the homeless. He is a Jew and this was during world war 2. So he was being deported to somewhere else for being a illegal jew. The nazis took him and they brought the other Jews into the woods where they were to dig holes. The holes were used to bury the Jews making the holes bodies. One by one the Jews were shot. Moshe had been luck and been shot in the leg. Then after a while he was back in the town. Where he told everyone what the basis did to him. No one believe him until the nazis came for them. Before this happen he was a fun happy guy and he is broken forever because of what he has gone though. This quote best represents Moshe.

    1. Rogelio, is on topic with his argument and he has a well written and thought out idea of what this quote means and what it should be like! He is the type of guy that will figure out a bunch and on this comment he really topped it off, he really knew what he was talking about and over all it was just good examples and supportive details. Great job Rogelio keep up the great work!

  3. To me this quote is a very interesting one actually because these when you do something wrong, it should be handled and honestly if it isn't, then really it doesn't mean that you wont make the same mistake over again and that is why having a source of discipline is good! They are always honest and don’t feel the need to lie. Lastly, they will sacrifice themselves to help others when they can. However, even though they are good people, their virtues can hurt them. For example Taking risks can lead to danger sometimes. Also, telling the truth when they did something bad can get them hurt or locked up. Making sacrifices for others doesn’t often help yourself, you often lose something out in the end. Hemingway is trying to tell the readers that it is good to be nice, but you can get took advantage of. We live in a cruel world and the nice people often get ran over and stepped on. The nice guy finishes last in the race. This is because everyone cares to much about themselves and not enough about others. You have to be mean sometimes to avoid getting bullied around. This quote relates to some characters we have read about. For example, Tom Robinson he was a nice harmless man who got taken advantage of by a mean man. Tom always told the truth, but still got found guilty. He made sacrifices like helping Mayella and got accused of raping her. He had the courage to take risks, like when he tried to escape from prison, but got shot. He is the type of people Hemingway is talking about, and he got destroyed. Bob Ewell stepped all over him and so did the jury, it shows how being a good person doesn’t always end up well. Another example is the Jews that are going through the Holocaust in Knight. They all possess a feeling for beauty especially while they are in the camps. They always tell the truth to the Germans and S.S. officers. They have the courage to try to escape from the camps and stand up to the officers sometimes. The family members will sometimes sacrifice their meal to make sure the others eat.

  4. “The best people possess a feeling for beauty, the courage to take risks, the discipline to tell the truth, the capacity for sacrifice.Ironically, their virtues make them vulnerable:they are often wounded, sometimes destroyed.”This quote means that good people are the ones that are vulnerable to being hurt or turned bad in this world. The good people are the ones that get hurt or are turned bad first.Good people have all the virtues of a feeling for beauty, the courage to take risks, the discipline to tell the truth and the capacity for sacrifice, but bad people always take advantage of the good people and sometimes change them. What the quote is saying is that the nice guys are sometimes so nice and innocent that they get taken advantage of by bigger forces. It is sort of a rich and poor scenario. The rich are the greedy, selfish people who take from the poor for their own benefit. The poor are the honest, innocent, generous people who get money taken from them by bigger powers. That is how it is in numerous countries around the world today. The rich take from the poor and that ruins good people and then they turn to bad people where they have to steal in order to survive.Everyone is born good where they have these virtues that Ernest Hemingway is talking about but its bigger powers that remove these virtues in good people. This quote relates to Elie Wiesel’s experince in Buna and Auschwitz. All the prisoners that came into the camp were innocent and good people, they were civilians. In their first few weeks in the camps the prisoners exhibit the virtues of good people. They have the courage to stand up to the SS officers and camp guards.THey would do anything to get more food rations for their families. They are also very honest with each other and stick together. After months in the camps the people lose the virtues. With Elie he has no courage to fight against the SS when he gets beaten by them. The whole point is that the Jews of the Holocuast all were good people before hand but then their virtues were lost. They were destroyed by the SS,by forcing innocent people into concentration camps in order to kill them for no reason. The Nazis are a prime example of bigger forces destroying good people's virtues.

    1. I agree with how you replied to the quote. Good people can be taken advantage of by bad people. I don't think good people are innocent though. I believe that they just care more about things than bad people do.

  5. The quote " The best people possess a feeling for beauty, the courage to take risks, the discipline , the capacity for sacrifice. Ironically their virtues make them vulnerable: they are often wounded, sometimes destroyed." , means that good , honest people can be wounded. I believe it means that people who think about more than themselves take a risk in being hurt. People can go out of their way for someone and can risk being destroyed. People who try to see the beauty in things can hurt when they see the ugliness. For example when someone sees the beauty of the rainforests and then sees what happens when people destroy them. People have the courage to take risks like moving to a new state or taking a new job. But they can get hurt if they new job is not what you thought it would be or with the new move you are having problems making new friends. It's great for people to always tell the truth but you have a chance of someone getting mad at you because you hurt their feelings. Which makes you unhappy. They same goes with sacrifice. Say your best friend likes the same girl you do. You step aside so your friend can date her. Now you are miserable seeing them together. All together it means that usually good guys have more of a chance in being hurt than bad guys. Good guys usually like helping other people but have a chance in disappointment where bad guys could care less either way. The saying is that nice guys finish last and that is usually true. But they know they are true to themselves. An example of this quote is when we read about the Holocaust. The Jews did nothing wrong to deserve the treatment they got from the Nazis. They were innocent , good people who went about their daily lives. They were not hurting anybody. But because people thought they were beneath them and not like them they were punished. During this time you saw courage, honesty and sacrifice from the Jews even though they were being punishment. In the end most were destroyed. Another example is in Romeo & Juliet. Romeo and Juliet wanted to tell the truth about their love. They had courage and took the risks to be together. They took sacrafices for one another but in the end they were destroyed when they both died. I am not saying that all good people could be destroyed or wounded, but you do have a higher chance because people who care open yourself up to it.

  6. "The best people possess a feeling for beauty, the courage to take risks, the discipline, the capacity for sacrifice. Ironically their virtues make them vulnerable: they are often wounded, sometimes destroyed." can have many different meanings. For example, it could mean that only the people who are the kindest and most trustworthy can be truly beautiful. It could also mean that the people who make the wrong decisions in life will be hurt later on in life, not physically, but maybe emotionally and mentally. I think the author is trying to tell people to make the right decisions in life. This relates to Romeo and Juliet because they make the wrong decision by marrying each other and they both killed themselves.

  7. I think this quote depends on the type of person you are. If your a good person good things will happen to you but if your a bad person you can have bad karma. Basically if you tell the truth you most likely would be in less trouble depending on the situation but if you lied about it you would only make the situation worse for yourself. An example would be Romeo and Juliet because they wanted to tell everyone their love for eachother but they couldn't so it caused bad karma on them. If they would've told the truth about their love from the beginning everything could've ended up so different and maybe they would have had a happy ending.

  8. I believe that the meaning of this quote is that even the happiest people are the saddest one or will have their sad days. The people that take risks, receive discipline to tell the truth are good people because the risk they take telling the truth can turn out bad or good, but when they tell the truth they know not to do it again. People’s virtues can make them vulnerable because of how respectful, moral and nobility they are people can pick on them and they will get upset and feel defenseless and helpless thinking they can’t do anything. I think Hemingway is trying to say that he has once been destroyed one time and was a happy person but was also sad and vulnerable. This quote relates to the character Millicent from “Initiation” because Millicent and her friend joined the initiation to be part of the sorority in college. Millicent got picked but her best friend didn’t and Millicent decided at first to join the sorority but decided not to because she didn’t wanna lose her best friend or be apart of something she’d be changed by. This quote also relates to me because i’ve taken the risk to tell the truth and earn my discipline because I know that when I took the risk to tell the truth, I will learn from my mistakes.
