  1. “The best people possess a feeling for beauty, the courage to take risks, the discipline to tell the truth, the capacity for sacrifice. Ironically their virtues make them vulnerable, they are often wounded and sometimes destroyed.” This is a very powerful quote and also true. I believe Hemingway is saying that the best people have a feeling of beauty for themselves and for others. They are brave enough to take risks to try to make themselves better. They are always honest and don’t feel the need to lie. Lastly, they will sacrifice themselves to help others when they can. However, even though they are good people, their virtues can hurt them. For example Taking risks can lead to danger sometimes. Also, telling the truth when they did something bad can get them hurt or locked up. Making sacrifices for others doesn’t often help yourself, you often lose something out in the end. Hemingway is trying to tell the readers that it is good to be nice, but you can get took advantage of. We live in a cruel world and the nice people often get ran over and stepped on. The nice guy finishes last in the race. This is because everyone cares to much about themselves and not enough about others. You have to be mean sometimes to avoid getting bullied around. This quote relates to some characters we have read about. For example, Tom Robinson he was a nice harmless man who got taken advantage of by a mean man. Tom always told the truth, but still got found guilty. He made sacrifices like helping Mayella and got accused of raping her. He had the courage to take risks, like when he tried to escape from prison, but got shot. He is the type of people Hemingway is talking about, and he got destroyed. Bob Ewell stepped all over him and so did the jury, it shows how being a good person doesn’t always end up well. Another example is the Jews that are going through the Holocaust in Knight. They all possess a feeling for beauty especially while they are in the camps. They always tell the truth to the Germans and S.S. officers. They have the courage to try to escape from the camps and stand up to the officers sometimes. The family members will sometimes sacrifice their meal to make sure the others eat. They are good people, but they get destroyed by the Germans.

  2. “The best people possess a feeling for beauty, the courage to take risks, the discipline to tell the truth, the capacity for sacrifice.Ironically, their virtues make them vulnerable:they are often wounded, sometimes destroyed.”This quote means that good people are the ones that are vulnerable to being hurt or turned bad in this world. The good people are the ones that get hurt or are turned bad first.Good people have all the virtues of a feeling for beauty, the courage to take risks, the discipline to tell the truth and the capacity for sacrifice, but bad people always take advantage of the good people and sometimes change them. What the quote is saying is that the nice guys are sometimes so nice and innocent that they get taken advantage of by bigger forces. It is sort of a rich and poor scenario. The rich are the greedy, selfish people who take from the poor for their own benefit. The poor are the honest, innocent, generous people who get money taken from them by bigger powers. That is how it is in numerous countries around the world today. The rich take from the poor and that ruins good people and then they turn to bad people where they have to steal in order to survive.Everyone is born good where they have these virtues that Ernest Hemingway is talking about but its bigger powers that remove these virtues in good people. This quote relates to Elie Wiesel’s experince in Buna and Auschwitz. All the prisoners that came into the camp were innocent and good people, they were civilians. In their first few weeks in the camps the prisoners exhibit the virtues of good people. They have the courage to stand up to the SS officers and camp guards.THey would do anything to get more food rations for their families. They are also very honest with each other and stick together. After months in the camps the people lose the virtues. With Elie he has no courage to fight against the SS when he gets beaten by them. The whole point is that the Jews of the Holocuast all were good people before hand but then their virtues were lost. They were destroyed by the SS,by forcing innocent people into concentration camps in order to kill them for no reason. The Nazis are a prime example of bigger forces destroying good peoples virtues.

  3. “The best people possess a feeling for beauty, the courage to take risks, the discipline to tell the truth, the capacity for sacrifice. Ironically their virtues make them vulnerable, they are often wounded and sometimes destroyed.” I think that hemingway is trying to say is that people who have a feeling for themselves will also have it for other people. If i know who i am and know how to fell for myself then i will know how to will other people too. I just works out you know. This relate to some characters in the stories that we read. For example, in Night the SS care only about themselves and never for anybody else. You will see them beat someone but will never in a dream get punished. It just always works out for them. These people never take sacrifices for anybody else but only for themselves. They really just don't care what happens to other people as long as it doesn't happen to them. It is honestly disgusting to think about and i think that it should change because people who are like this don't really deserve anything. They don't deserve as much as those who work hard and are nice. N the book night, everything is basically being handed to them, served on a silver platter. They get so much power and all they do is discriminate other people and don't do anything to work for that power. As you see elie wiesel works for her life and to stay alive and survive these people the SS just stand around and beat people just because they feel like it. I don't really think they deserve to be here or even get the freedom to do anything for their own good. This is what i mean Hemingway is trying to get across to viewers or readers of his quote. It is a very powerful quote and it has a lot of meaning to it. As you can see, This relates to many things. It could be characters in book or even people in real life who you do know or may not know at all. This is what i think of Ernest Hemingway's quote.

  4. Ernest Hemingway once said "The best people posses a feeling for beauty, the courage to take risks, the discipline to tell the truth, the capacity for sacrifice. Ironically, their virtues make them vulnerable: they are often wounded, sometimes destroyed." I think the meaning of this quote can definitely be broken down into separate parts. It means people can be so nice and so kind that you can take advantage over. Then, people can hurt you because of you being too nice. You have the ability to say and do whatever you want, but sometimes it isn't always the best to say or do. Some people tell the truth, to help other people, but it sometimes doesn't play a good part on your own end. In the world we are living in today, some people will take advantage of you. Its not always so good. Hemingway says that the good guy would get destroyed. I think that is sometimes true. If you aren't mean sometimes, bullied will just step all over you. I think that this quote relates to the book we are reading now. In the book "Night", Ellie is obviously the good guy. He never did anything bad. He cared about his family and keeping them alive. Then, he got captured and was taken to a concentration camp when he was completely innocent. He got stepped all over in that camp. For example, he never yelled at the guard, but he got beat. Then, they tried to take his gold tooth, but he refused. Instead of getting it pulled and getting stepped on, he stood up and said no. He was still being nice, by not starting a fight, but since he was such a good guy he was an easy target for the other guys at the camp. I think that Hemingway has a great quote and that its true. If you are way too nice in this world, people will take advantage of you and you wont feel great while you're being great to other people. Sometimes you do have to put your foot down and say something. You cant always be nice in this world, but its good to be nice half of the time. I definitely think Hemingway wants to send a message to people and that we all should be listening to it.

  5. What I think this quote means is that it's telling us there are certain types of people out there. You got the people who do mischievous stuff after, the kind that only care for themselves and lie when needed to not cause any problems, the type that doesn’t really get out much so no one really knows them much, and many more types. However, this quote is talking about one specific type of person. It is talking about the type of person that is very rare to find. The kind of person that is very honest, sees beauty in everything, takes many risks and sacrifices thing. The quote lists these traits that a person could have and says that the best person possess this, which I think is true. This quote is saying that a person who possesses these traits is a person who cares about others way more than himself/herself. They see beauty in anything and will take care of anything. They are willing to takes the risks needed to help someone. They are willing to be honest and tell the truth about everything to avoid problems and to let them know what really happens in the situation to resolve it faster. The will sacrifice anything they need to survive or help another person out. These all describe what the quote is saying about that one type a person and why it says this is the best type of people. However, it then says that these people are often wounded more and can be destroyed easily. When it says this, it explains some negatives about this type of person. What it means by this is that since they will take many risks and sacrifice a lot, they may not be looking at how they are handling with all of it and worry too much about the one they are helping or caring for. Also, if someone were to talk bad about them, they may take it too seriously and may easily get upset over it because of all they have done. This can then make that person become easily overpowered by someone else, and get destroyed by them since they may take something to seriously and meaningful. They like people to feel appreciated for what this type of person does for them, because this person is doing it all for them.
A character this quote relates too is Elie Wiesel from Night. This quote relates to this character because he is a jew and was taken to a concentration camp and is working in it. While this all happens, he expresses all these traits. He sees beauty in everything he sees since he was taken away and won’t know when he will be able to be in the “Real” world again. He is taking risks at the concentration camp such as lying about his age and letting his shoes get muddy. Although he may not be honest about telling his age, this is protecting him and his father, so this lying has a good cause. Plus, Elie is sacrificing everything he has. All his stuff and belongings were taken away, but he is willing to let this happen, so that he can live and be with his father. On the other hand though, all that is happening really hurts him and makes him upset, creating a wound in his mind, and with these mental issues that he may experience, it can make him become easily “destroyed” by the nazis and everything that is going on, and make him lose all hope. This is why Elie Wiesel relates to this quote.

    2. Hunter I definitely agree with your reply. There are all types of different people in this world, whether good or bad. Many good people possess the traits that Hemingway says makes them a good person. Bad people are all the opposites of these traits. However, the good people often get walked all over on by the bad people in life.

  6. “The best people possess a feeling for beauty, the courage to take risks, the discipline to tell the truth, the capacity for sacrifice. Ironically, their virtues make them vulnerable; they are often wounded, sometimes destroyed.” -Ernest Hemingway. This quote means that sometimes in life you need to work for what you want. To be beautiful you must go through the ugly. To be courageous, you must take some risks. In order to know how to be truthful, you must be disciplined for your wrongdoing. When doing so, your virtues are destroyed. You need to build your courage up to rebuild your virtues that were once there. What he’s trying to portray to the reader is that whatever you do, you must always keep trying. There are gong to go through obstacles in life that will try and stop you. Once one thing brings you down you must never let them stop you from what you're doing. People will purposely try and bring you down but you have to stand tall and don't let anything get to you. A character that is like this is Boo Radley from To Kill a Mockingbird. He was so quiet and avoided everyone. But he never lost his virtues. Whenever made fun of him or made up childish rhymes about him he never let that break him down. Despite the kids taunting him and making up games about him, he still went out and saved Jem and Scout. He was hurt but he did what he had to do to help the kids. Also, Elie Wiesel in the concentration camps is another example. The Nazis would degrade the jews, polish, gypsies, and homosexuals. There was no reason for the systematic killing of 6 million people. The Aryans just believed they were the superior race so they killed them. Everyday they whipped them and threatened them for death. Elie Wiesel even though her virtues were stripped away from him, he stayed alive just to show that he will not be degraded. He fought against the Nazis to show that no one can break his virtues. In conclusion, this quote means that whenever someone tries to degrade you, never let them win. They purposely try and break you and you must rise above and show them that you have strength, In the end, never give up on yourself because if you do, you'll never be successful in life.

  7. “The best people possess a feeling for beauty, the courage to take risks, the discipline to tell the truth, the capacity for sacrifice. Ironically, their virtues make them vulnerable: they are often wounded, sometimes destroyed.” I think that this quote by Ernest Hemingway means that everyone is good in some ways, and bad in others. People like to take risks to have some fun or adventure. Others thrive by telling the truth and can’t get by without doing so. They would sacrifice themselves or things that they have for anything they feel is important to them. The bad comes in when those risks take a turn for the ugly and something bad happens. The truth could hurt them or others they care about. The things they sacrifice, may not be worth it in the long run. These good people get taken advantage of sometimes and sometimes, bad things just happen. This quote relates to a few books we have read so far. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Tom Robinson was wrongfully convicted of something he didn’t do. He helped Mayella, but somehow got punished for it because Bob Ewell said that Tom raped Mayella. Although he told the truth, Tom still got sent to prison. Boo Radley also faced the same issues. People were scared of him and didn’t know what to expect. On the inside, he sacrificed himself to save Scout and Jem from Bob Ewell. Another example is in Night, when Elie would not give up his gold crown. The German officers found his weak and vulnerable spot, his father. They tortured his father until Elie gave up his tooth. And for what? If he had waited a little while longer, he could’ve kept his gold crown. In the movie, Escape from Sobibor, people tried to escape from the camp. Some were shot and killed and then there were 13 left. These 13 people had to pick one other person to die with them, or the officers would choose 50 others to be killed. This is an example of when people try to be courageous and take risks, but in the end, it ends in souls being destroyed. Everyone who wasn’t chosen had to watch the 26 people get killed, or they would get killed to. The “bad guys” in these stories really hit them where it hurts into getting what they want. These are a few examples of when innocent characters get taken advantage of because they have weak and vulnerable spots.

  8. “The best people possess a feeling for beauty. The courage to take risks. The discipline to tell the truth. The capacity for sacrifice. Ironically, their virtues make them vulnerable. They often wounded, sometimes destroyed.” What Hemingway is trying to say is, everything from beauty and sacrifice is what a human is. A feeling for beauty can have many meanings. Some people will have an interest in many things that are beautiful. That is nature, clothes, art, or even yourself. The courage to take risk is everyone these days. Taking risks is from making a decision for your job or jumping off the Grand Canyon because of a dare. Either way we can take risks at whatever rate of complexity it is. Also, the capacity for sacrifice is giving something up for helping your friend or family member. But what is ironic is, these virtues can easily wound us. This is because of order by other people. If you are in a job, there is always that boss that will tell you what to do. But he want you to do things how he wants it and not be yourself. If you are yourself, you will get punished by the actions that you did at your job. This quote can relate to a character I have read from a book. These characters I from the book,” To kill a mockingbird.” The characters names are, Scout and Jem Finch, and Atticus finch and a couple of other. . These characters have been themselves through the book, but it cost them a punishment. First we will start with tom Robinson. Tom was a hard worker and did what he was told. But things changed when bob ewells daughter accused of tom for rape. Bob Ewells daughter took advantage of tom because he had his virtues and he was colored. Another example is with Bob ewell. Bob knew what happened to tom and his daughter. But he lied and told the judge at court the fake story and got away with it. His story was that tom Robinson raped his girl. But that was a lie because bobs daughter forcefully kissed tom. Tom got scared and ran away. That was the real story, but tom was punished and was sent to jail. You see, some people these days just want to take control over you and you cant be yourself. That is what Ernest quote mean.

  9. “The best people possess a feeling for beauty, the courage to take risks, the discipline to tell the truth, the capacity for sacrifice. Ironically, their virtues make them vulnerable: they are often wounded, sometimes destroyed.” To me I think what this quote is trying to tell people is that the best people in the world are the ones that can take the risks without hesitation or the ones that have the right of way to face you and tell the truth to you. The people that are the best to be around all the time are the ones that have all these qualities within them. You should surround yourself with people that hold these qualities. Also, it means that even though they have all these great things about them, their morals in life can make them more easily hurt in life. Their morals that they have on life can make it more difficult for them to do these kinds of task so they feel broken sometimes. It can hurt them to do these things, it sometimes may hurt them in the smallest way. But in other times, it can leave them feeling completely defeated and not able to do anything. The damage can leave them weak and unable to feel good. Their morals are so vulnerable that some things can break those morals so easily to the point where they feel hurt after breaking them. Ernest Hemingway is trying to tell readers that their is always a point of breaking for good people in your lives. He tells readers that sometimes they sacrifice themselves to help someone else in their lives. Even if it does go past their morals in life it leaves them more hurt for themselves. This quote can relate to Moshe the Beadle from the book “Night”. This quote can relate to him because he holds these qualities within himself. He has a lot of courage when going back to Sighet to tell everyone what had happen to him while being taken by the gestapo. He goes back to Sighet to warn everyone about the terrible things that had happened to him and other Jews that went through what he had to. Moshe has a lot of courage to tell everyone about his experience even though not everyone believed him. He still wanted people to hear his story and tell them about the atrocities going on. His morals were definitely vulnerable during this time for him mostly because they were being violated by people who felt that his morals in life were wrong. Moshe is definitely one character that I would say definitely reminds me of this quote.

  10. The best people possess a feeling for beauty, the courage to take risks, the discipline to tell the truth, the capacity for sacrifice. Ironically, their virtues make them vulnerable: they are often wounded, and sometimes destroyed. Ernest Hemingway once said that. I think it is very true, there are some people that are willing to take risks that benefit others and could have negative outcomes for themselves. A person that lives an open life, willing to help other people, the same people that would try to get advantage of them in any way even if they have to hurt them emotionally, like Hemingway said they are often wounded. They are the type that have a genuine smile and are honest about their feelings and are never harsh even when people are harsh to them. People that have the discipline to tell the truth can be hurt as well, like telling a comfort lie to make someone relax, or a harmless lie to get themselves out of trouble. They would not tell lies like those and it can cause problems for them. When Ernest said that they have the capacity for sacrifice, I think he meant that the people he is describing are willing to give up what they have in order to help someone else. An example of this type of person would be Elie from the book we are currently reading. He is learning what the attributes Ernest is describing and how to act them out. He does have the capacity for sacrifice as he watches his father being hit by the S.S. he debates whether to interfere and be hit himself or let it happen and feel guilty. It would be a big thing to accomplish to adopt all these attributes and change how they live.

  11. “The best people possess a feeling for beauty, the courage to take risks, the discipline to tell the truth, the capacity for sacrifice. Ironically their virtues make them vulnerable, they are often wounded and sometimes destroyed.” This is a meaningful and very true quote. I believe the meaning behind this quote is don’t go the extra 20 yards for people who will only go 1 yard for you. When you do so much for someone they take advantage of you and realize that they have you wrapped around your finger and they hurt you in the end. This quote basically means that the best people who put everything into someone are left destroyed and taken advantage of. The point Hemingway is trying to get across is, being nice and sweet doesn’t always work out for you in the long run. He’s not saying be mean and bratty to everyone, but don’t over do it when it comes to being nice. Hemingway wants you to know that when you’re always seeing the better things in someone, taking risks for them, and are true to you you will mostly likely be wounded.
This quote relates to Tom Robinson from To Kill A Mockingbird. I think this because Tom would be nice to Mayella Ewell. He would help her around the house while on his way to work, and he would clean up their yard. One day Mayella used him for lust and her father walked in and beat her. Tom ran out and left. Later on Mr. Ewell said Tom beat and raped Mayella. Tom was only being nice to Mayela and he got shots fired at him for something he didn’t do. He risked being late to wherever he was going to help her, then he pretty much got backstabbed by Mayella. She didn’t help him when the truth needed to be told. She left Tom in the courtroom with a prison sentence, wounded because he was just being nice to her.

  12. “The best people possess a feeling for beauty, the courage to take risks, the discipline to tell the truth, the capacity for sacrifice. Ironically their virtues make them vulnerable, they are often wounded and sometimes destroyed.” To me this is a very valuable and powerful quote that should be kept in mind. It means that the people find beauty in things and never take it for granted. They have the confidence to do something someone else might never have the confidence to do. They will take the consequences even if they are telling the truth. Everything they do makes them a good person but people take advantage of them. It happens all the time. The nicest people are the ones who are getting hurt, the ones who always end up sad because they were used. When you use someone it hurts them emotionally and with things like it being repeatedly done, it can destroy the happy person they were once before. It makes them depressed knowing how happy they were but they ae so terrified of being hurt again so they just stay out of things and try to go unnoticed. We have seen so many examples of people like this. An example from the book we are reading right now is Moshe the Beadle. He was a smart man that everyone respected and he took the chance to come back. He wanted to warn everyone and he could have been killed for that but he wanted to try and save his friends. He told everyone his experiences and nobody believed him because he was the only one to take the chance to save other people. After that nobody listened to him and disrespected him. He was gone inside and acted so emotionless due to such a traumatic experience. Another example is the Jews living during the holocaust. They stood up for themselves until they realized that being who you are and what you say can get you killed. A lock was put on their minds and they were treated like dirt. They were happy normal people but because of a religion their happiness was destroyed and turned into pure sadness and depression. The Nazis are taking advantage of the Jews every chance they get. They use the Jews for their personal needs, and for work. They beat the Jews senseless just because they felt like it. Every Jew in the holocaust had a life, a family and it was destroyed because one person decided they shouldn’t live.

  13. The quote by Ernest Hemingway, “The best people possess a feeling for beauty, the courage to take risks, the discipline to tell the truth, the capacity for sacrifice. Ironically, their virtues make them vulnerable: they are often wounded, sometimes destroyed.” means that, people are mostly good, or want to be good. Most people will try to be the best they can be and as honest as the next person, which at times will get them into trouble. In the statement, “The capacity for sacrifice”, most people will put themselves out there for others. For example, they will hold the door open for a complete stranger, they will sacrifice going without something they need just to make someone else happy. In the story to Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus took a risk by standing up for Tom Robinson, a black man that was thought to be guilty of rapping Mayella Ewell. During the time of the story, Atticus stood alone, trying to protect Tom Robinson. Later on it was discovered that Mr. Ewell was the guilty one. Another example would be Boo Radley, everyone in Maycomb county feared him, and his residence, but yet in the one part of the story, Boo save both Scout and Jem from Mr. Ewell’s attack, and returned them both back home safely. Even though Boo Radley was vulnerable, he still showed what a good person he was inside. Boo showed courage and took a risk in saving both Scout and Jem, even though most people were scared of him because of the stories they were told about him. To me this also touches on today's society, for instance, if we take a perfectly honest man, put him into a situation where he discovers a wallet full of cash, would this honest man return the wallet and cash to the authorities, or would he place the wallet and cash into his pocket and walk out of the establishment? We as people have to hope this honest man would return the wallet and cash because that’s what a good person would do. In today’s society we look at Police Officers as a whole instead of individuals. We say they are bad, but not everyone should be lumped together. There are bad apples in every bunch. If we take Hemingway's quote, and reference that most people want to be good, than we can see the good in the people around us.

  14. The quote by Ernest Hemingway “The best people possess a feeling for beauty, the courage to take risks, the discipline to tell the truth, the capacity for sacrifice. Ironically, their virtues make them vulnerable: they are often wounded, sometimes destroyed.” This is a very powerful quote, that I believe to be very true. Though it is only one quote that does not mean that it doesn't have a lot of meanings in one. People who have the most self beauty are the prettiest people. They are confident, courageous, and strong people. They shine the brightest and make everyone's day. They are the people who never lie and are very trustworthy human beings. They are unselfish and have no self pity. Though that is not the message Hemingway is trying to get across to the reader. I believe that Hemingway is trying to say that the people who are most confident, strong, unselfish, trustworthy and courageous people are usually the people who get hurt the most for their vulnerability. A good example is like the quiet one of the group. They don’t say a word and keep to themselves, but they are the ones who get teased and bullied. While the people who talk and are selfish get away with everything. A character I believe relates to this quote very much is Boo Radley. Boo Radley at the beginning of the book is viewed as a monster or as a killer. All the kids would be afraid of him and talk bad things about him all the time. As the book progresses, the author becomes a little older and starts to talk less about Boo. At the end of the book Boo Radley saves Jem and Scout and they realize what a nice man he is. Nobody gave Boo a chance they always thought he was just this bad person. Which leads to my answer, though their quote and good people they seem to be the ones who always get hurt and never have a chance. Another group of characters I believe agrees with this quote is actually the jews in holocaust. The jews were treated with hatred and anger by the Nazis after the had done nothing. They were sent to concentration camps and killed for doing nothing wrong. Jews were silent, nice, and good people and for their vulnerabilities, millions of them were killed and slaughtered to death by the Nazi Germans.

  16. The quote “The best people possess a feeling for beauty, the courage to take risks, the discipline to tell the truth, the capacity for sacrifice. Ironically, their virtues make them vulnerable; they are often wounded, sometimes destroyed” by Ernest Hemingway can mean many things. I believe the meaning behind this quote is that, even the best people who are beautiful, outgoing, tell the truth, and sacrifice, make mistakes. You can be the most perfect person and still be wounded or destroyed. The message Hemingway is trying to get across to the reader is that no matter how perfect you are you are still imperfect. Everybody has their own wounds or is destroyed in some way.Even though you make mistakes you shouldn't take them out on other people. Another example, is in the book to kill a mockingbird. Throughout this book we learn about a man named Tom Robinson. Tom Robinson is a African American man who is being charged with raped. Mayella claims that this man raped her and hit her. However, her story isn't in line and doesn't make much sense. Sadly, during the time the “crime” was committed Tom was convicted. Although he didn't actually commit the crime he was charged. Mayella had good characteristic but she was wounded. She was wounded badly but it wasn't from Tom. She made him take the pain for her wounds. This quote relates to many books we read this year. Currently in class we are reading Night by Elie Wiesel. Throughout the book we learn about the terrible and horrible living conditions and all the sad things the Jews had to go through. I think this quote can relate to many people however; it relates to the Nazi’s the most to me. The Nazis are German soldiers who are usually pretty good looking men, who tell the truth to their Nazi Party, and when and how to sacrifice. Oh trust me do they know sacrifice. You would think that since they are all these “great” things you wouldn’t think they are wounded or destroyed. The Nazi’s were cruel and horrible people to the Jews. They had all these great characteristic traits. Meanwhile they were wounded and had to take their wounds are rub them on other people. This quote is strong and totally relatable to most people. All in all, although this quote is so powerful it can relate to the smallest of small things, no matter how perfect you are, you still have your flaws.

    1. Tori, I agree. You make some good points. I like your interpretation of the quote; no matter how perfect you are, you are still flawed.

  17. “The best people possess a feeling for beauty, the courage to take risks, the discipline to tell the truth, the capacity for sacrifice. Ironically, their virtues make them vulnerable; they are often wounded, sometimes destroyed.” This message is a very true. Many people are very nice, generous, and have many more good qualities. They are good people to be with and very good people in general. Because these qualities make them good people and nicer it can make them let their guard down so they can be hurt more. Being a better person with all of these qualities usually means that the people aren’t rude or mean. Since the people aren’t rude or mean, that causes them to not be used to hard or painful situations because they probably avoid them. So when they are presented with bad and hurtful situations it hurts them more than other people. People with different qualities and virtues and more used to those situations and therefore aren’t as harmed by the situations that might hurt and more vulnerable person more. A character that is very relatable to this quote would be Ellie. In Night he is a very nice person and feels for other people. Like in the quote, he is nice, truthful, and takes risks. It makes him a good person. Because he takes risks and doesn’t expect the worst of people he didn’t expect the Nazis to be as evil as they actually were. He and many other Jews didn’t believe in the warnings they received and trusted the Nazis to be nice. Because of their trust they let their guard down and the Nazis ended up being bad people. This ended up being the downfall of their virtues and qualities. The Nazis took advantage of them, forced them on a train, forced them into labor camps, and dehumanized them. These actions resulted in the people taking risks. They risked trusting the Nazis and turning a blind eye to the warnings they received and it ended up wounding and killing many of them. Just as the quote says, “The best people possess a feeling for beauty, the courage to take risks, the discipline to tell the truth, the capacity for sacrifice. Ironically, their virtues make them vulnerable; they are often wounded, sometimes destroyed.” People with the best qualities to make them better people ended up being harmed by those qualities.

  18. Ernest Hemingway once said, “The best people possess a feeling for beauty, the courage to take risks, the discipline to tell the truth, the capacity for sacrifice. Ironically, their virtues make them vulnerable: they are often wounded, sometimes destroyed.” I think the meaning behind this quote is the best people are the morally good people, yet those are the people who get hurt. He’s trying to say, in a way, that the heros get all the hardships because they’re doing the right thing. Bad people might have it easier but they have their ways not morally good. He says it is ironic because the people who are good don’t deserve the bad in their life. This reminds me of the quote, “The most beautiful and wonderful people are the ones who leave us first. Do you know why? When you walk into a garden which flowers do you pick out first? The most beautiful ones.” It is the same concept where a righteous person is ironically hurt, despite their good nature. The good people are vulnerable too because they have a conscience, and the bad people don’t have a conscience so doing the wrong thing wouldn’t hurt them as much as someone who does the right thing. A character that relates to this quote is Atticus from “To Kill a Mockingbird”. One example is how neighbors and relatives, even his own sister, would make fun of Atticus and how he raised his kids. He would allow Scout to be in what she wanted to wear, instead of being in a dress like society at that time expected. Even though people would complain about it, Atticus would continue what he was doing because he knew it was the right thing. Another example was the Tom Robinson trial. During the 30s and 40s, people were very prejudice and discriminated against African Americans. When Atticus was defending Tom Robinson, almost nobody liked and was against it. He was also bothered, has been made fun of, and has been complained to about this. Still, Atticus followed his conscience and believed what was right no matter how verbally beat up he was over this. He stuck out from everyone else which made him vulnerable like Ernest Hemingway’s quote had mentioned. He had and did all the things mentioned in the quote, “courage to take risks” and “discipline to tell the truth” and “capacity for sacrifice”.

  19. That is what I think about the given quote.

    1. I agree with the SS officers in Night only caring about themselves and never anyone else. But if anyone in Night should be considered the closest to this description I think that it would be Hitler. He lied, pointed fingers and manipulated his way all the way to becoming the head of Germany.

  20. “The best people possess a feeling for beauty, the courage to take risks, the discipline to tell the truth, the capacity for sacrifice. Ironically their virtues make them vulnerable, they are often wounded and sometimes destroyed.” This quote is really powerfully and true in many ways. They always somehow get hurt and destroyed in some ways. I believe he is saying that those people are really strong and feel like they could do mostly anything. They are very like confident about themselves. They feel the need not to lie or anything else. They feel like they could always be honest which can hurt them in the long run. Being too nice is not really good at all and you can get hurt in a lot of ways. People will feel like they can take control of you and do whatever you want to you. For example Taking risks can lead to danger sometimes. Also, telling the truth when they did something bad can get them hurt or locked up. Making sacrifices for others doesn’t often help yourself, you often lose something out in the end. Hemingway is trying to tell people that it is good to be nice but you can also be stepped on and taken advantage of. Sometimes you have to lie and do other things you do not want to. We live in a tough world where you have to be tough or bad things can happen to you. It is kind of ironic how that can happen. By doing the right things bad things will happen. It makes no sense but that is just the world we live in today. Sometimes you have to be mean when you want to be nice to make it through. If you are not bad things could happen. Like for example if you are nice when you are a boss or something people think they can do anything to you. One character that is like that is Tom Robinson. All he did was tell the truth when he was asked to but still ended up being guilty of murder. He felt bad about that white women and they basically put him jail which eventually led him to being shot and killed. If he would of lied there would be a good chance that he could live. So sometimes in life you have to do things you do not want to to get through and live a good life.

  21. They are always honest. So they don't need to lie. Lastly, they will put themselves in danger for others. However, even though they are good people, their virtues can hurt them. For example Taking risks can lead to danger sometimes. If the risk is big enough it can lead to losing a lot of money or getting hurt or killed. Making sacrifices for others doesn’t often help yourself, you often lose something out in the end.But sometimes it's worth it. Hemingway is trying to tell the readers that it is good to be nice, but you can get took advantage of. We live in a cruel world and the nice people often get ran over and stepped on. You have to be mean sometimes to avoid getting bullied around. This quote relates to some characters we have read about. An example is the Jews that are going through the Holocaust . They all possess a feeling for beauty especially while they are in the camps. They always tell the truth to the Germans and S.S. officers. They have the courage to try to escape from the camps and stand up to the officers sometimes. The family members will sometimes sacrifice their meal to make sure the others eat. They are good people, but they get ruled by the Germans. That's why sometimes you have to stand up to the bad people sometimes. Because some people were to scared to be honest and spread the word of what Hitler did. If people just told people the truth maybe not as many people would have died in camps. It is basically the complete opposite for the officers in the camps. They are honest but not in a good way. The officers show no courage to say that this is wrong what we are doing to other people. The only thing the officers sacrifice is the jews in the camps. They are bad people ruling over good people. That is what the quote “The best people possess a feeling for beauty, the courage to take risks, the discipline to tell the truth, the capacity for sacrifice. Ironically their virtues make them vulnerable, they are often wounded and sometimes destroyed” means to me.

  22. “The best people possess a feeling for beauty, the courage to take risks, the discipline to tell the truth, the capacity for sacrifice. Ironically their virtues make them vulnerable, they are often wounded and sometimes destroyed.” This is a very powerful quote. The depth of this is just too deep to really appreciate it without delving into it. The best people possess a feeling for beauty, the courage to take risks, the discipline to tell the truth and the capacity for sacrifice, he said. I see all of these things as completely true. The ability to see beauty in something is very important, as many people don’t see art the same way they did years ago. The appreciation for a beautiful oil painting or art sculpture is being taken away and replaced with a steady selfie hand. The courage to take risks is being replaced with the ability to jump into the BMX park in a video game. The discipline to tell the truth is the worst of all at this time. I find my friends telling others the secrets that I trusted with them and find the truthfulness of people being turned into the ability to put others down to make themselves feel better about themselves. The capacity for sacrifice is becoming very hard to find. With most people finding it easier to blame someone else for their mistakes. Ironically their virtues make them vulnerable, they are often wounded and sometimes destroyed. This is the hardest hitting part of this quote. As I said earlier, people are finding it easier to blame others than to be honest about their mistakes. But the people who don't shy away from a punishment fall behind, causing these virtues of honor and truthfulness to be put under the ability to come up with a quick excuse and get out of trouble. This quote applies to Atticus from To Kill A Mockingbird. In the story Atticus is extremely straightforward and honest about every little thing in his life. But this only leads to him being deceived and beat by liars and racists. The irony of that is just terrible. Atticus spends his time working as hard as he can to save a person's life but is put against a person who can lie better than he can tell the truth and in the end he loses.
