Student Question | What’s Your Dream Job?
By MICHAEL GONCHAR  MARCH 10, 2016 5:00 AM March 10, 2016 5:00 am

What do you want to be when you grow up? Has your dream job changed as you’ve gotten older? Have you already started investing time and effort to try to make it happen?

In “The New Dream Jobs,” Jenna Wortham writes:

When the National Society of High School Scholars asked 18,000 Americans, ages 15 to 29, to rank their ideal future employers, the results were curious. To nobody’s surprise, Google, Apple and Facebook appeared high on the list, but so did the Central Intelligence Agency, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the National Security Agency. The Build-A-Bear Workshop was No. 50, just a few spots behind Lockheed Martin and JPMorgan Chase. (The New York Times came in at No. 16.)

However scattershot, the survey offers a glimpse into the ambitions of the millennial generation, which already makes up more than a third of the work force. By 2020, it will make up half. Survey after survey shows that millennials want to work for companies that place a premium on employee welfare, offer flexible scheduling and, above all, bestow a sense of purpose. These priorities are well known and frequently mocked, providing grist for the oft-repeated claim that millennials are lazy, entitled job-hoppers.

But it’s important to remember that this generation was shaped by a recession, an unprecedented crush of student debt and a broad decline in the credibility of all kinds of institutions. Stability is an abstract concept to these young workers, so they instead tend to focus on creating a rich, textured life now, rather than planning for a future obscured by uncertainty.

Students: Read the entire article, then answer the questions below:
— What’s your dream job? Why do you want that job? Do you think you’re well suited for it?

— What qualities are most important to you in your future career? Salary? A sense of purpose? Scheduling flexibility? Feeling challenged? Feeling appreciated? The ability to get ahead? Liking what you do or being good at your job? Anything else?

— What investments are you willing to make now to help you get your dream job eventually?

— What companies would you want to work for? Are you surprised by the National Society of High School Scholars survey rankings? Why?

  1. My dream job is something that probably won't happen, and so I do have another route. But, my actual dream job is to be a musician. I want to be in a band and make money making music. The money isn't the most important thing here, but I'm good at it and enjoy it a lot. I feel I would be very well suited there. There's really nothing better than making great music in my eyes. And that's why I'd love to be a guitarist. Not for fame, and not for lots of money. Just for the music. Of course, the odds of this happening are slim to none, so I have to get a backup plan. My backup plan would be some kind of teaching. I'm not sure what, though. Being a music teacher would be a super viable option because I already understand and know how to teach it. Also, I'm just a not shy person, I explain things well, and it would give me purpose. If it's not music, it's teaching. I want to be that teacher that doesn't make school hell, and actually makes the stuff we're learning fun, or at least tolerable. I know the money isn't always that great either, but it would give me purpose, and make me feel good. Just like how music is to me as well. As for investments that I would be willing to make to be in a successful band and be the guitarist? Almost anything. I'd be homeless for a year if I could do that, as long as we made great music. For teaching? Eh. Not much, because there are other jobs that would give me a similar meaningfulness. And really, after guitar is gone, it really comes down to something tolerable that pays the most, as long as it doesn't kill me to go there. One thing though, I would only give up all of my things if I had a guarantee of being a guitarist. If there was no guarantee, I would probably go to teaching. Of course I'll go to college and all of that, and by then I would most likely know how my music career will pan out. All in all, having my dream job would be tough, but I would enjoy it very much and I'd make a lot of money. I think anyone's real dream job they'd plan to enjoy.

  2. My dream job is to be a police officer. I want this job because I want to make society a better place, and I will enjoy taking criminals off the streets. I have always wanted to this job as a young kid. Something about being a police officer has always inspired me. I do think I am well suited for this job because I am in shape. I also know what to do because i’ve had family members that were cops and I asked the for advice. You have to know when to be strict and know when to be nice to people, and I am good at that. There are many qualities that I would have to have to become a cop. For example, I would have to have scheduling flexibility and be ready to in anytime, even when i’m off duty. I would have to be good at my job and be able to keep up with the crime. You don’t have to like your job, but if I was a cop I would enjoy it. It always helps you get your job done better if you like and want to be there. If you don’t like it you probably won’t focus that much and may not do your job efficiently. If I were to start making investments now to get to my dream job, my first would be getting a college degree. You have to have a college degree to get a decent job. Another investment I would make is going to the gym or getting muscle builder to be fit and strong. I would also go to police shows and talk to officers to try to get a leg up.The last thing I would do is see how the training course is that cops have to pass and I would build a replica. If I was to work for a company, it would probably be google. I am not surprised by the National Society of High School Scholars survey rankings because my generation is really big into technology. A lot of kids have iphones and know how to use them very well, and they know apple makes a good amount of money so it doesn’t surprise me. It is a job that doesn’t take a lot of hard work and labor, therefore it’s perfect for my generation. Overall I am not surprised by the rankings due to how lazy my generation is.

    2. Jakob, I like your decision to want to be a cop. I like that you want to take time off the streets, too. It really does suck how lazy this generation is. Plus, if we had more great cops, the world would be great. We could all be more protected, and feel safe. I hope one day you do become a cop aswell!

  3. When I grow up I want to be a singer. As soon as I learned how to talk I started singing. I've always wanted to do this and it never changed. I remember my friends asking me what I wanted to be and I would always say singer. They would always ask me if it ever changed and it never did. I enjoy singing and it makes me happy. It's all i ever wanted to do. By this point i'm so into singing I need to pursue my dream. I think that I am well suited for the job. Honestly, I think that I can be anything if i really put my mind to it. I need to have the vocal ability to actually do the job. I need to be able to be good at that in order to actually do the job. I also can't be scared of performing in front of people. Famous people have concerts and they are always around people. If I do successful I will get paid a lot of money. I mean the money is nice obviously, but I will only be happy if I am doing the thing that I love. This is a big job,so I would have to make investments that would help me in the future. For example, I play the piano. I used to take piano lessons and now I know what I am doing. This can help me when I sing. I also take chorus now and that will improve my vocals, which will help me in the future. If this dream actually comes true I would want to work with Universal Studios. They are a pretty big company that will take me into the gateways of fame. It would be an amazing opportunity. I am not that surprised with the National Society of High School Scholars survey rankings because everyone has their own dream. Those people mostly wanted to do something big. I think everyone wants to be successful with what they want to do. I know that I do. If i keep trying and use every opportunity I can get my hands on I know that I will be successful. If everyone thinks this way, they can make their dreams come true too!

  4. My ultimate dream job is to be a social media marketer. For this job you would need a large social media account with lots of followers. This is basically the easiest job possible but you get payed a lot. If I post a 30 min picture for someone they can pay me up to $30! So I literally have to do nothing accept click post. I feel like I am well suited for this job because I've been doing it for over 2 years. But I have not devoted much time into this job because of school and sports. This job basically is my dream job because I can be lazy and sleep in everyday and still have enough money to supply a family. But, this job is nonsocial and also I kinda feel like I would get bored after a while just sitting in my house everyday on my phone all the time. Yes my view on my future life time job has changed since I've gotten older. I feel like now money means everything in a job no matter how boring or stupid. Growing up made me realize that I can't have a low paying job to support a family that I hope to have someday. The qualities that are the most important in my future career is flexibility and salary. I want to be able to do as I want and to be paid pretty well. So to do this I have already started putting investments and time and effort into my first choice job. I have put almost 2000$ in of my own money to start up. But that money didn't go to waste since i have made a profit from it greatly. I put in effort everyday into this job by going on my phone and doing stuff to help me. This has helped me greatly because I have many connections now in the social media world that can help me in the future. Currently I work for TheBluMarket and Ogmobi but i hope one day i can create my own website and have people working for me. I can accomplish this by spending a lot of time learning about websites and social media so I can create a site and make money. Overall I feel this job will allow me to be who I want to be and to live a happy life.

  5. My dream job would be to run a startup business and turn it into a money making empire. I’ve always liked the idea of making something that would help others or just make something that people would enjoy. It would probably be clothes or handmade cosmetics, but at an affordable price. This is something that I would personally enjoy doing because it seems like a whirlwind of things barrelling towards you all at once. For example, orders, shipments, customer complaints, and I would have to deal with all of those. I will admit that my creative process for making things happen or creating something is not the best, but when I see something that inspires me, I just have to go for it. Running a startup would have me make many investments like money to start the business. Honestly, if I could create something so big with what I have now, I would give it all up. Running my own business would be a lot of work, but I think with a few business partners, it would just work out. Seeing movies like “The Intern” made me realize that I could actually do something like that. It may take over what I have, but it would be my dream to have all of this really happen to me. I feel like I may need to act more assertive towards people to really make my dream come true. Feeling challenged would always make what I do more interesting and I feel like it would have more of a purpose. Having a job like running a startup business would be a dream come true. Overall, I think that people in my generation take the easy way out, but when they put their minds to something, they could definitely do it. I’m really not surprised about the National Society of High School Scholars survey rankings, but getting a job at Google or Facebook is a really hard thing to do. Many people don’t realize it, but it takes a lot of hard work and dedication to make dreams like mine happen. Most people in my generation can do a lot of things, and what they choose to do is purely up to them.

  6. My dream job is to become a horse trainer. When I was little I’d look at pictures of horses, print them out and stick them all over the house. The reason this job is my dream is because I could take in a horse that doesn't know much and turn it into a horse that is ready for shows and is safe enough to for beginners to ride. Kinda like a point and go pony. I'm definitely well suited for this job because I trained my own horse. Legacy didn't really know much when I first bought him and now he knows more than he ever has because I helped him. He amazes me everyday. I say to myself now and again, “I can’t believe I trained this horse.” I never gave up on him and I gave a chance to be a horse again.

For this career you need to have focus, patience, and positivity. When it comes to training an animal, you need to focus and pay attention because you never know if something could go wrong. Every time a rider gets on a horse, they put their life in the hands of an 1000lb animal on four legs. Think about that for a second. Getting up on an animal that can kill you, but it chooses not to. It’s crazy. Patience, however, is one of the most important things to remember while training a young horse. If you're not patient, then the poor horse is going to feel overwhelmed. If you’re slow and willing, then it’ll learn rather quickly and trust you. Positivity is also a very important thing to remember while training a young horse because they tend to feed off what you're feeling. If you're nervous, they'll become nervous. It's almost like a chain reaction. I’d have a rather busy schedule, riding my horse and then riding the one I’m working with. I'd give them a break for a day or so in between so they could rest and I can catch up on things.I’d definitely feel challenged and appreciated at the same time because even though sometimes horses don’t pick up certain things that others pick up right away, I know that whoever ends up with this horse is going to be extremely lucky and will have a horse with a good head on it’s shoulders. It’d be a big investment because of equipment and essentials that I’d need to get once and awhile along with more lessons to get me farther than where I am now and teach the horse a little something new while i’m at it too.
There are a lot of companies out in the equestrian world and it’s hard to just chose one out of all the fantastic brands and companies that I use and have seen. I’m not surprised by the National Society of High School Scholars because everyone dreams differently. We’re all dreamers, we just haven’t figured that out yet.

  7. My dream job is to be a mechanical engineer, specifically I want to work with robotics. I want this job because I have always had an interest in how things work. Everything that ranged from electronics to computers interested me since I was young. When I was ten I watched a tv show that showed a man named Mark Setrakian, he created 12 robots and the show had the robots fight. Ever since I saw that show I have been hooked on robots. The qualities that I look for with this job is a flexible schedule, and the sense of being appreciated, and needed. Even though people will say that they don't care about the money, I do care about how much I'm making, I want to be able to support myself. I am willing to try to get into the best college and get training as soon as possible so that when I am ready to officially start working I would have the proper training and I would hopefully have be ahead of the rest of my colleagues. I would want to work for NASA, I could use my engineering skills to help build things that go up in space, I would probably strive for something like building a rover the travels to Mars, but I would even settle if it's something small like a storage compartment I would still be extremely proud of myself for being able to build something that went up to space. I am surprised by the survey, I figured that many people would want to work at Apple or Facebook. However I think that many people would want to work where the money is. Other people end up doing something their parent did, or they enter the family business.

  8. In highschool years of school you are asked to seriously consider a career path and what you want to grow up to be in the future. For a long time i thought about it and it is probably the hardest decision i will ever take in my entire life. There are huge risks to this because if you can’t make a living off of this then you missed and if you can than you hit the spot. When i grow up i want to be in the U.S Marine Corps. Many people say to me “ why would you want to be that you can die from it.”. I tell them that i know but the reason that i want to be one is so i can protect the people of my country and be there for safety. I care about our communities and the people around me. I want them to know that i am protecting them and that i am there for their safety. When i am doing this job i do want to make money obviously...so i can pay bills, help my family, etc, but most of all i want to protect this country. I will always know that i am helping someone even knowing i can't see them or be there with them, i will always be doing something for them. To be able to get to my dream job i am willing to do anything to get there. Since it is the military i want to work on getting tougher and stronger physically. I am willing to give up my time everyday to do something that i know will help me in the long run. There really isn’t a company i will work for except for the U.S Government but i am planning and really want to achieve good grades and make a good reputation for myself so when people look at me they will think that i am a good student/person and i am respectful also. As you can see, i am willing to give up my life and risk my life to protect the people that stand amongst me. Even if i get those negative people i come across i will stay focused and just ignore and keep moving forward even through hardships.

    1. I agree with what you're saying Justin. You have to seriously consider what you are going to pursue in life. Being in the Marines would be a huge burden, but it has some advantages. To get a good job you have to give up some things to get there, and you seem to acknowledge that. Being in the marines will gain you respect and that is a good thing to achieve.

  9. My dream job is to be an architect. I would like this to be my dream job because it can allow me to express my creativity, thought and ideas that i have within my mind. I would be able to design buildings by making their shape, size, and all kinds of details inside or outside of it. I think I would be well suited for this job because I enjoy expressing creative ideas and being able to make something through my ideas. Qualities most important to me for my future career is knowing how to measure things correctly, knowing how to find area and perimeter, Geometry skills, knowing how to use the tools, creativity, and most importantly, being determined and not giving up along with patience. To become an architect, it requires a lot of patience to be able to completely build a building since they can take many months or even years. Also, you need to be determined because making the buildings will be a challenge since many problems can occur during the construction of it. Plus, without the creativity, you wouldn’t be able to know where to start on what to make. The salary of the job should be around $30-$40 dollars an hour since the architect would have most control of what is going on with the building. The sense of purpose would be to make homes for people to be happy in with their families and friends. The schedule could be pretty flexible depending on how well the progress of the building is doing. If we were to encounter problems during the construction, I’d have to maintain and keep an eye on it to make sure nothing else happens. This job will be a challenge since it requires a lot of work and time and will cost a lot of money. People should appreciate what I do since i’m trying to help them and let them have a place to live and start a new life in their new home. It could be hard to get ahead since one project could be hard enough to handle. To do this job you have to enjoy it or else you could get lazy with it and not do so well. There are many qualities you need for this job, and without most of them, you could have some trouble having this job and enjoying it. Investments i’m willing to make to eventually get my dream job is to set aside money I get from smaller jobs before this, maybe get some scholarships, or even wait to buy certain things so i can quickly get this job. A company I would probably want to work for is Gensler since they are one of the best Architecture companies in the US and earn a lot of money and make lots of profits. I would want to be in a good company who could easily build and design buildings efficiently to make great progress for the company. However, yes i am surprised by the National Society of High School Scholars survey ranking because i know how a lot of people are interested in all the popular technology and brands and would want to be a part of them. Lots of people are into the social media and probably feel they need to be like everyone else. They must feel more accepted as a person being a part of them and feel that is the only company they should work for so they would be known. There are many options out there for people to choose from, but most don’t search and look at all the options and automatically choose to be a part of Google, Apple or Facebook.

    1. I completely agree with you hunter. When looking for a job, you should make sure you are being appreciated by other people when looking for a job. Also, if you don't have the right qualities for that certain job, then you're not going to enjoy it as much and you are going to have trouble doing that certain task for the job.

  10. I have many dream jobs I would want to do. One dream job I would love to do is to become an orthopedic surgeon. I have always had such an interest in medicine and becoming a surgeon since I was a little girl. The feeling of saving someone's life has always gave me such a thrill to think about. My dream is to help people and make a difference by doing something I love. Becoming a surgeon is a very hard and takes a lot of school. But, I believe if I work hard in school and in everything I do, I could become a surgeon. At my age now I am not well suited to become a surgeon, but once I graduate college and go to medical school, i will be capable. There are many qualities I will need to succeed that is being strong enough to do surgery, smart enough to learn medicine, and to be just a good person. I feel like since the salary an orthopedic surgeon makes is $512,000-$519,000, people would think I am only becoming one for the money. Although I would be lying if I said the money wouldn't be great, but that's not the only reason. I want to help people and being an orthopedic surgeon just interest me so much. Being able to push myself, to save someone's life makes me feel appreciated and helpful. Of course to make my dream job I would have to save a lot of money for school, get good grades, and work as hard as I can to accomplish my dream. College is already very expensive so on top of college, I would have to pay for medical school too. Ali would have a lot of debt after but if I work hard in a school and get a good job. Orthopedic surgeons work 7 days a week with very little sleep. But, it would all be worth it by doing the job I love to do. Most orthopedic surgeons work in hospitals or private practices. The best hospital to work in for Orthopedics is The Hospital for Special Surgeons in New York. That is why my dream job is to become an orthopedic surgeon.

For instance, how you included how much money you would be making and how you included how the money would be great but isn't the only reason why you are doing it. I understand as well how you would be under a lot of pressure from the lack of sleep and school work you would have to do to be a surgeon. However, in the end it will all be worth it once you save somebody's life, all that hard work will pay off and you wouldn't have done it for nothing.

  11. Currently the dream job I want is to be a lawyer. The main reason being, I would really like the opportunity to be paid to defend people in court. Yes, my dream job has changed as I have gotten older, for example, when I was in early elementary I wanted to be an astronaut because how cool would it be to get paid to take a walk on the moon? But in reality, they don’t do that anymore, and the astronauts today just go to a space station for a couple of months and do research. But since I’ve gotten older, I’ve looked at more what would be successful and what I’m good to be the choosing factors for a job. I have looked into and done research in 8th grade for a marking period project and the first things I saw is it’s gonna cost two big things: money and time. The top 10 law schools cost over 43 thousand, and that's per year. The time it takes to complete law school is about 7 years and that includes the big test at the end to get your degree. The average salary for a lawyer is about 130 thousand, or $64 and hour. I think that is an ok amount to make, and I think it would be worth the effort that would have to be put into it. I think I would feel really comfortable to have to prove a client innocent or handling business situations, things like that would be interesting to me. Of course, not every lawyer is the one you see on tv yelling at the judge, but there are very many different fields within. I am not sure which I would be best at, but I am willing to go to the college to find out which degree I want. Really, there are more things being a lawyer will cost, like energy and passion. It will require energy to study all the aspects of the profession and the energy to have full days at work. To really be good at this job I would have to have a passion for it otherwise I just wouldn’t be skilled at it. But that goes for any job, the way to move up is to be passionate about what you do. Giving your job the full effort will help you get further than others and same with everything else. It could help you reach your dream job just like you think of it.

    2. Dan I agree with you. Jobs that people want can depend on many different things such as money, time, workload. All those things can definetly change what people want to do as they grow older. The world changing can also affect jobs that people strive for.

  12. I have a lot of dream jobs to be quit honest. However, mostly I've been interested in being an attorney or pediatrician. Firstly, I am interested in being an attorney because, I love watching cases and I always am sticking up for somebody in general. Therefore if I was attorney I defend the person to the best of my abilities despite the circumstances. I would like to be a divorce attorney mostly to help the parent who deserves custody win. I would like to be a pediatrician because, I actually like kids. I would like to be that silly doctor that they enjoy going to when they are sick. I would enjoy my job and wouldn't mind doing it. Also, i know everybody says it, but when I'm older I honestly do not want kids. So all my little patients I would consider as my own. Personally, I do think I'm well suited for both jobs I am a very hardworking person in general and if I have to go without sleep some nights I would definitely be able to do it. There are many qualities most important to me in my future career of course a good pay, and good insurance. I definitely would want their to be a purpose to my job I wouldn't want to be doing it for nothing. I dont mind if I have to work all the time I like to be kept on my toes. I love a challenge so if there is something I can't figure out I will literally sit there to the point where I am ready to rip my eyes out just to figure out the challenge. I would love to feel appreciated by all my co workers and patients or clients. If I'm going to spend the rest of my life and my education focusing on either being an attorney or doctor I am doing it because, I actually enjoy it. If you dislike your job the money isn't worth it no matter how much it is, you want to enjoy what you are doing. I am willing to do very good in school. The usual straight A's no biggie. Listen to my teachers and peers. I like to have fun but I always put school first no matter what. What you do now effects your outcome later in life it all pays off in the end. The companies I am willing to work for are google and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. I honestly was surprised by the National Society of High School Scholars rankings because, most students would just be interested in working in companies for social media not government jobs. Its actually very interesting and cool to see that not everybody is like that. All in all, this article was extremely interesting and informative, it got me thinking about the future and my career later in life more.

  13. My dream job is to be a musician. I always love music when I was young and I still love it now. I like most music styles. Some of them are, Spanish, techno, etc. But my favorite music types are dubstep, dance, and Rap. I want to make music that I like and everybody will like. Every day I listen to songs that are good. They are usually on my phone. But each song has something different. Some songs that you choose are the ones you want to feel. Like when you are working out in a gym and you want to do better. You will probably listen to something that will bring your heartbeat up like dubstep and dance songs. Another example is, for some reason you are really sad, well there are songs just for you. My favorite type of music is dubstep. The reason why is because this type of music gives you energy that you need in the day. It make your day go faster and well you do better at some things when you are listening to it. A musician has two good main reasons to take this job. One, you can make your own music that you created and some people will like it. The second reason is that you will make a lot of money if your music get very popular in some places, or otherwise globally. You could be so popular that a lot of people like you. Or you cold like to make music and try to make you music an inspiration to places. It would take a lot of training to make music, but I will take my chances to make my music the way I want to. I probably will have to take college and a school for music, but that is fine by me. All in all, having my dream job would be tough, but I would enjoy it very much and I'd make a lot of money. I think anyone's real dream job they'd plan to enjoy. I want every second to count when I do this job to count. So, this is the dream job that I want to take, and hope my job will be successful.

  14. My dream job is to one day become an engineer for aerodynamic technology.I intend on modernizing or creating new prototypes for aircraft. The reason for this is because I’ve always been interested in the technology in the future, specifically future aerodynamics.I've always wanted to create something that would change aerodynamics forever and create better and more technologically advanced aircraft.Ever since I’ve seen the prototype for the F-35 fighter jet which is a new fighter plane that is more advanced than most of the aircraft to date in the world.I was amazed by how the advanced the plane was and all its capabilities. That made me want to go and build planes that were technologically advanced for its time. The qualities I look for in a job are a flexible schedule,to feel appreciated, and to like what I do and feel good about my job.I want to be happy with my dream career.I want to be able to do something that I'm interested in and a job that can work with me and give me some time to myself.I'm not in the job for the money but a quality of the job has to be a decent salary so I can live a happy comfortable life. The companies I would like to work for or I would dream of working for in my dream career would be the United States Air Force,Boeing,or NASA.I’d especially like to work for the United States Air Force because I'm mainly interested in technologically advanced military aircraft.I’d want to create new aircraft that would better the military and better future aircraft. The National High School Scholars survey didn’t surprise me because that's all this generation knows about when it comes to careers. They don’t know about any other careers and really don’t know all the other opportunities this country and world has to offer.Facebook and Apple jump out to younger people because it's something everyone knows and has.Its name is widespread and everybody has an idea of what Apple and Facebook offer.Nobody knows what theyre going to do when they're in high school,as life goes on you figure who you want to be and who you want to become.

    1. Rudy I agree with you, I like how you know what you want to do, and how you know specifically what you want to do. I like how you told what got you interested in engineering.

    2. Rudy I agree with, that you know what you want to when you're young. Then, you pursue it as you get older. I am the same way, if you start young you will have a leg up. Overall, I like your plan for engineering.

  15. The question “What do you want to be when you grow up?” Often stumbles upon a child almost every time they encounter someone important in their lives. Sometimes it will seem as a trick question, almost as if they are wanting you to answer wrongly so they may lecture you on what is truly “the dream job.” When we are younger almost every child say they want to be 1 of 5 or maybe all things by the time they're in their twenties; a teacher, a doctor, a policeman/ woman, fireman/ women, or a veterinarian. They almost have no idea how much practice or determination goes into those jobs but what can you do, they 7 or 8 year olds. If you asked me the question now, I’d immediately tell you a lawyer. All my life I’ve grown up watching television shows that without lawyers, there would be no point. Me watching these things had a heavy impact on my life. I’ve always wanted to be one because I know I’m fit for the job. I can almost argue my way out of anything if i get the chance to. Ive also always liked the idea about keeping people and places safe without violence, only words and the power of law. I really would love pushing myself to do the right thing when I'm tempted to do wrong doing. Even though lawyers make a very considerable amount of money i'd only be in it for the sake of the law. Now all i can really do is study hard and start saving money to become what i really want to become. If i don't start now, i won't ever be able to make it then. We all most certainly know that law school isn't cheap to get into. You must be rich in your brain… and wallet.Starting now would push me in the right direction for the future. For my job, i would want to work in Special Victims Unit. With cases like those, there is more to take stand for, and especially being a woman. I want to stand up for what i think is right in my eyes and protect anyone who feels threatened by anyone disobeying the law. I was very surprised on the surveys. To see how much people have changed has crazy. I know when i was younger being in the FBI sounded like the coolest thing ever and now Facebook is topping that. The future generations are in our hands and if we don't find a way to control it, we will all fall apart.

  16. My current dream job at the moment is to be a lawyer. I chose this mainly because I will get paid a lot of money for doing something I enjoy and helping people at the same time. However, my dream job has changed as I have gotten older through the years, one example of this is when I was in early elementary school, I wanted to be a professional basketball player because just imagine hitting that game winning shot to win a huge game for your team. Imagine having everybody knowing who you are even if they don’t watch basketball. However you have to come to realize that the chance of that actually happening for you is slim to none. But since I’ve gotten older, I’ve looked at more what would be successful and what I’m good to be the choosing factors for a job. In 8th grade for a marking period project, I looked at being a lawyer and the first things I saw is that it’s going to cost two big things; time and money. The top 10 law schools cost over 43 thousand dollars per year, which is crazy high for the average person. The time it takes to complete law school is about 7 years and that includes the big test at the end to get your degree, which is very difficult to pass. The average salary for a lawyer is about 130 thousand, or $64 and hour. I think that is a pretty good amount to make, and I think it would be worth the effort that would have to be put into it. This honestly goes for practically any job out there to really perfect it. If you want to be really good at something you have to have the passion in order to want to do it and to do good with it. If you are lazy and don’t really care about it you won’t try to be better or anything really. You really need to try especially if you're going to be a lawyer cause you are in control of a big event in someone's life, it could be jail time or freedom.

  17. When I grow up , my dream job is to be a photographer or work at a digital media company. I want a job like this when I get older because I enjoy taking pictures of everything that I do. Also, I want a job that I’m going to enjoy and be good at. I will be able to learn new things and discover new techniques from the job that I didn’t know before. I think I will be well suited for the job because I already know a little bit about photography and computer programming so I will already know some of the technology and programs for photography and for computer programming. Some qualities that I feel are important for the future is to see if the company is big in the world and that the job has a good working environment to be in. Also make sure the pay is good and stable. Another thing is to make sure that it will fit my schedule and that I will be able to adjust my working hours and days. I would also want a job that has good employees around me. I wouldn’t want to work around people that don’t appreciate the work that I do or that are going to treat and make me feel less important than everyone else and to make sure that I’m included and not left out from everyone else. Some investments that I will be willing to make for my dream job is to buy good equipment. I want to make sure I have a good camera and a good working computer . Also, making sure that I have some of the best software for editing on. Some companies that I would like to work with are canon and nikon for photography. Or if I want to go for computer programming I would like to work for apple, google or a social media company. I’m not surprised by the National Society of High School Scholars survey rankings because I would expect for people to work for the bigger companies that are more popular. A lot of people would want to work for higher brand companies than companies that aren’t really big. Younger people want to work for big companies than smaller companies.

    1. Sam i completely agree with you, people should be treated equally and appreciate everyone else, it makes the work environment a lot more comfortable. I wouldn't want to work with people who are disrespectful. I also understand how younger people would want to work for bigger companies because they might not be ready to handle the responsibility of working with a smaller company.

    2. I agree with you Sam. You would want to choose a job that you are good at and something you enjoy so that you would want to do your job. You wouldn't want to do something you don't like or enjoy and dread doing it everyday. YOu wouldn't have any fun and feel you made a bad decision. Also, it would be a good idea to invest for a great camera and computer siince they are the main sources of that job. Without them, you wouldn't be able to do your job, so it's good to think of what you would need.

  18. A dream job for me would probably be working for some big technological company and being a higher up in the business. I am not to sure how or if that will happen but that would be good for me. What I would want is a high salary and a job that I don’t absolutely hate. Having a job with a big purpose would be nice but I would be perfectly fine working an average job that doesn’t have much impact. After all everyone can’t be a world changer. If my job could be somewhat interesting and pay well I would really like it. It doesn’t need to be the most fun job because it IS a job but as long as it isn’t horrible it would be fine. Hopefully the people I work with are also nice. If they are fun and nice and I don’t have an extremely horrible boss it would be perfect for me. I don’t really want a specific job yet but I know the general area. The reason most people work in the first place is it to make money so I would want a job that pays enough for me to live comfortably. That is what I am looking for for the most part. I try to work really hard in school so I could get into a good college and get a better job so I don’t need to work as hard later in life. If I figured out my dream job and knew that was the thing I wanted to do for the rest of my life, I would endlessly work for it. Since my work life will probably be a very long one I would want to be happy doing what I do for eight hours a day. To get the job, I would constantly study, take certain classes, do internships. Being happy for the later part of my life is what matters. From the survey given to students I’m not surprised with the results. Since we life in an endlessly expanding and modern world where everyone is exposed to all sorts of technology I would expect people to want jobs in their favorite technology companies. Another reason the major technology companies are at the top is probably because the people surveyed are still young and may not know exactly what they want to do yet so they went with a common answer.

  19. This is a very hard question considering I don’t know what I want to do when I get older. Through the years it would bounce from a professional flute player to a forensic scientist, to working at the CDC or even playing at warped tour. As I seem to watch the days pass by, I start to wonder if the job choices I have are even possible or if they are dreams that are never going to be fulfilled. The more I start to get involved, the profession I am interested in changes. As of right now, I want to be an audio engineer. It would be my dream to work with Broadway and various productions. It doesn’t even end there, I could work with movies and tv shows or tour with a band and do sound for their concerts. The opportunities with his job are endless. This job does require a lot of skill and knowledge. You need to know every cable, every solution to what problem might happen, you just have to be ready for it. Audio engineers do get paid a lot and I would be very flexible with scheduling. What would be most important to me is how efficiently I worked that night and if there’s anything I could do to make it better. I’m going to OCVTS for audio technology so I would be working with it every day. I am willing to take any classes if it means getting closer to my dream job of being an audio engineer. The company I would want to work for would have to be Fearless Records. They have so many great musicians and I feel like with what I, willing to do, my background will be just what they need. I could help produce songs and mix them together. I am not surprised due of the amount of kids who are dropping out of school and deciding that they don’t need an education to make it in the real world. Maybe if kids would actually try, they would actually get somewhere and they wouldn’t have to drop out of school. With how lazy our generation is in general, I wouldn’t be surprised if the expectations for students will become lower.

  20. My dream job would to be a structural engineer and design buildings. I would really want this job because I have always wondered how things stay together. Like how things get balanced out perfectly so nothing will collapse or anything. I think that would be a really good job. Also it pays really good too so that is another good thing. I would be able to do what I want when I retire. I think I would be well suited for that job. Some of the qualities you have to be though for that job is being smart. You have to be really smart to build anything really. You have to be able to know what you are going to do even when things go wrong. Also the salary is good the average salary is 80,000$ so that is a good pay. You could help people build places and building for people could live or open offices at. I think that would be a pretty cool job. You could also have a pretty flexible schedule too. It just depends if you work for someone or you are your own boss. If you are your own boss you could make your hours whenever you want. This job can be challenging though because designing buildings is not really that easy. There could be something that goes wrong in the building and you will have to start all over. You have to work your way back up just like anything else. If you fall down you get up. I just think that would be a very good job and I would excel at it. You don’t have to really sacrifice that much for this job though. You just have to know your stuff pay attention in college and you can even go as far as getting your masters degree for it. That would really help and you could get a higher paying job quicker. I would even be an electrical engineer too because you get paid good for that too. I like electronic things so I think that would be a good job for me too. So my dream job would be to be some type of engineer and help out people.

  21. My dream job and future is something I think about most all the time. I’m always curious as to what lies ahead for me. I tend to change the idea of my dream job often, yet I don’t worry about it too much because I know I still have a lot of time to decide. However, through this indecisive cycle of choosing a career path, there has always been one thing that lingered in the back of my mind a lot: becoming an author. This has become an ideal dream job for a couple of reasons. There is nothing like a good book, so I want to give people enjoyment from my fictional stories and well developed characters. I love it when you get to know the characters and really connect with them to something personal, whether it’s something beautiful or the polar opposite of something tragic. I want to recreate that for other story lovers and book readers. The other reason I’d want this job is simply because I enjoy writing. I like coming up with a complicated plot for characters or maybe a simpler scenario and seeing how they overcome the situation. Mostly, I love the fact that you can write about anything your mind imagines; it’s like you have all the freedom in the world. I’m not exactly well suited for it yet, but I know with enough practice and help I can be. As of certain qualities in my job, I’m pretty easy going and I don’t ask for much: my salary does not have to be great, as long as I can feed and take care of myself I will be perfectly fine. Sense of purpose is pretty important because like I said I want to bring people enjoyment. I don’t care as much for scheduling flexibility, as long as I’m not working weekends or late night shifts. However being challenged is a little more important. I think it’s important to be challenged a little bit daily to keep my mind sharp; I don’t want it to be an easy breeze. Feeling appreciated is very nice but I’m not asking for any praise. Ability of getting ahead is probably the least important, as I want to take my time and make sure my books come out high quality and thorough. I would want to be good at it so people can get pleasure from my stories, but I think the most important thing is to like what I’m doing. When you love your career and are passionate about it, it doesn’t feel like work and it becomes fun. Also doing something you love will make you happy all the time which is good for your health. You don’t want to be stuck with something you don’t want to do or you might not be as fulfilled with your life, so this is a main priority (to me). Investments I could make are practicing my writing and reading other good authors’ novels. No, I’m not surprised about the National Honors Society rankings because the one’s in the highest place were bound to be the most popular.

  22. My dream job would be to work with sharks. Ever since I watched the movie Jaws when I was less than 5 years old, my attraction to sharks has been thru the roof. I can name so many of them, and can give you fun facts. They are so fascinating, and who doesn’t love shark week? I think I’d be suited for it if I get the proper knowledge and education. As a 14 year old I have many years to shape myself and to see if this job can work out. I don’t want to be over stressed trying to make the right decisions while on the job. I think my happiness will be most important when I search for my future career. I don’t want to spend the rest of my life behind a desk. Going to Australia, or Hawaii would be such cool places to work in. Not only are they pretty tropical places, but the marine life is amazing there. With traveling to those places means lots of money. I would like it to bring home much money for myself and my family, and if it doesn’t there’s always a way to get the extra money. I don’t want to be happy at work, but miserable when those taxes come in the mail. I would like to feel some challenge or else work wouldn’t get done. Challenges can be a bit stressful, but fun. Appreciation would be something lower on the list, but it would be a big thing. I would like to be appreciated in my job, or respected in general. I would spend money to get this job, or talk and make as many friends it will take to help me along the way. I would major marine life in college and make sure I get the education I need. Working at small aquariums, or even some big ones would benefit me. I don’t have any companies in my mind. You don’t normally hear about big marine companies.

I’m not shocked teens want to work for Google and Apple because they know how it works and that everyone uses it. They’re big companies and they probably get paid big bucks. Us teens grew up using their products and have so many ideas on what we’d like to have on their products. Everyone has different views on life, and what they want. If they want to work for those companies they can because I’ll be giving answers to people who want to know why there are so many sharks by New Jersey.

  23. When I grow up I would hope to be in a job in the arts. I have fun putting together stories, drawing, etc, and i believe that any job in that side of the arts would be great. My mother is a great artist and I think I could become good at art if I dedicated myself to it. One of the top jobs I would love to get a position in would be a graphic designer. Graphic designers deal with the layouts of magazines and books, essentially polishing off the work to make everything come together nicely. Another job I would be interested in would be a graphic illustrator. Graphic illustrators deal with logos of companies, designs of patterns in building, schools, etc, and also make up a good part of the work force that makes the photos in magazines look good. Another great job I would love to have would be a tattoo artist. I feel like working hard to make art that people would respect and love enough to put on their bodies permanently would be a great job to set me on my way to being in a better job. Another job I think would be interesting would be an architect. My uncle is an architect and he often lets me see his designs and I think it would be great to make house designs. I think that it would be very interesting to work out the ins and outs of houses, and I think it would be a great feeling to make a design that someone would appreciate so much they would spend loads of money to make it real. Another job that would be amazing to land a successful spot in would be becoming an author. I have had a passion for writing stories since I was a child and i think that being able to do what I love for the rest of my life would be amazing. Another job that would be amazing would be becoming an illustrator, I love to make images to help show what people are trying to express by art. All in all I have essentially no idea what i want to be when i grow up, but i made a pretty good list.
