Student Question | If Teenagers Are Such Bad Drivers, Should They Be Allowed to Drive?

 MARCH 22, 2016 5:00 AM March 22, 2016 5:00 am

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports, “Per mile driven, teen drivers ages 16 to 19 are nearly three times more likely than drivers aged 20 and older to be in a fatal crash.”
If teenagers are such bad drivers, should they be allowed to drive?
In “Teenage Drivers? Be Very Afraid,” Bruce Feiler recommends that one way to improve safety among teenage drivers is to get parents more involved:
Spend enough time having parenting conversations, as I’ve done personally and professionally for the last dozen years, and certain patterns emerge. In nine out of 10 cases, if you’re talking about highly motivated parents, the message to Mom and Dad is: back off, chill out, park the helicopter.
Whether you want your children to be independent, resilient, creative; whether you’re talking to teachers, psychologists, grandparents; whether you’re discussing homework, food, sports; the recommendation, time and again, is relax.
Recently, I stumbled onto a topic in which the advice was the exact opposite.
Among the people who know what they are talking about, the unanimous message to parents is: You’re not worried nearly enough. Get much more involved. Your child’s life may be in danger.
What’s the topic? Teenage driving.
“If you’re going to have an early, untimely death,” said Nichole Morris, a principal researcher at the HumanFIRST Laboratory at the University of Minnesota, “the most dangerous two years of your life are between 16 and 17, and the reason for that is driving.”
Among this age group, death in motor vehicle accidents outstrips suicide, cancer and other types of accidents, Dr. Morris said. “Cars have gotten safer, roads have gotten safer, but teen drivers have not,” she said.
Students: Read the entire essay, then tell us:
— If teenagers are such bad drivers, should they be allowed to drive? Why?
— Do you think it would make sense to raise the age that teenagers get full, unrestricted driver’s licenses from 16 and 17 in most states to 18 or even 20? Why?
— Do you agree with Mr. Feiler that parents should get more involved when it comes to their teenage son or daughter’s driving?
— Can you drive yet? Are you a good driver? Are your friends? Or do you think you will be a good driver when you’re old enough to get your license? Why?

— What do you think is the best way to make teenage driving safer?

  1. Even though some teens are such bad drivers, they should be allowed to drive. In my opinion you should practice driving at age 14 and 15 whether you do it in a pit or in a open parking lot. If practice a lot before you actually drive on the roads it shouldn’t be a problem. If you are a bad driver and cause crashes, then you shouldn’t have your license. You have to be a good enough driver to pass your drivers test and if you do you should be allowed to drive. Teens are eventually going to have to drive one day, so why not start when you’re young. Adults who have been driving for a while still cause crashes, but they are allowed to drive. They're no different then a young inexperienced teen. I do think it would make sense to raise the age that teens get their driver's license. This would give teens a little more time to practice driving and get even better before they get their actual drivers license. Maybe that extra little practice will prevent more car crashes with teens. I do agree with Mr. Feiler that parents should get more involved when it comes to their kids driving. If parents take their kids out to practice driving it will help their children out a lot. The more parents take them out to practice the better they get. They don’t get better with the parent not helping or caring. When they have no practice their is a good chance they could get in a crash. My dad took my sister to practice driving very often, so she had a lot of practice when it came time to take her driver's test. Therefore, she passed it no problem and now she is a good driver. I can’t drive yet, but my sister and a couple of my friends drive. They are all good drivers and are very safe on the roads. Their parents all took them out to practice before getting their licenses, which helped them tremendously. I do think I will be a good driver when I get old enough to drive. I will have a lot of practice and will be well prepared when it comes time to take my test. I think the best way to make teens drive safer is to have them practice driving safe. Parents should make sure their kids are driving safe by monitoring them.

    1. I agree with you that teenagers should be allowed to drive. They should practice at a younger age before they start driving to get used to it. If they don't start driving while they are younger they will be a bad driver when they are older.

    2. I completley agree with you, its how the kids do react on the road than age. Teens do need to practice earlier because when they actually do get to the age where they could drive its no longer just a practice run. With guidance from the teens parents, it could really help in the long run.

  2. The idea of not letting teens drive is not very realistic. The only real reason that they crash more is because they are new to driving. Obviously, they will be worse at it. If we increase the driving age to 18 or 20, the same accidents will take place. I think that we should possibly make driving tests a little harder, which would help. Then, they would be adjusted to driving and that would maybe prevent more accidents. Also, maybe make everyone retake it every 2 or 3 years to make sure everyone is familiar on the rules. Age has nothing to do with it! I do though, believe parents should involve themselves more with their kids. This is only because it’s a real serious matter. Life versus death is VERY important, so I do think every precaution should be taken while under this matter. If that means the parents need to mention it more, so be it. I can not drive yet, but I believe I’ll be a fine driver. This is because I will pay attention a lot, and follow the rules.

All in all, I believe that to make teenage driving safer, driving tests should be harder, and longer. Also, I believe that to keep everyone safe, they must retake the test every 3 years, to ensure everyone remembers what to do.

  3. Since teenagers are considered bad drivers, I believe they shouldn’t be allowed to drive. I say this because driving is a dangerous thing to do, especially at this young of age. They are still in high school and are still learning about adulthood. Driving is one big step into reaching adulthood, and teens are taking this step way to early. When teens learn to drive, they feel they have the power to do anything and go anywhere they want, and then may abuse this power by driving often and taking their friends everywhere, which could eventually result since the teen may be distracted easily or just drive to almost everywhere he/she can think of. With them driving often, it makes the teen’s life put in more danger since they don’t know everything about life and adulthood yet, and still have many things to learn about what’s out there. They will see driving as just a luxury and not as an importance and just drive to these places just for the fun of it. They don’t fully know everything yet, and with them driving at this young of age, they could easily makes mistakes and make silly decisions while on the road. For example, Dr. Klauer, research scientist at the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute, states that one in four teens are to get in a crash into their first six months of driving. This shows that it is likely for a teen to put their life at risk and get in an accident. This leads to the point where I think that it would make sense to raise the age that teenagers get full, unrestricted driver's licenses from 16-17 to 19-20. I think it would make sense because they would have learned more and know more about the roads in greater depth by having someone with them for a few extra years to teach them more and get a better understanding of it. For Instance, the article states that in 2013, almost a million teenage drivers were involved in police reported crashes. It also states out of the crashes that it resulted in 373,645 injuries and 2,927 deaths. We can decrease these numbers by waiting for the teens to become a more mature age and understand the roads better to make the roads a safer place.
Next, with what Fieler said, I agree that parents should be more involved when it comes to their teen’s driving. They should be there to help and support them with their driving experience, to teach them and learn the roads. Without the parent involved, their child may not know everything about driving, and could potentially cause their child to be in an accident. The parent must be involved to make sure their child is learning about their roads and to know whether their child is ready to drive or not. Without the parent, the child could make many mistakes and not fully know how to handle driving. Next year is when I will be able to start driving, so I can’t say if i’m a good driver or not. However, I have cousins who drive who are around the age 18, and they’re okay drivers. I wouldn’t fully trust being in a car with them yet, but after a year or two i will since they are probably still learning new things about the road and car. When, I am able to drive, I wouldn’t say I would be that great of a driver. There are many rules and signs to follow and know about the road, and it will be difficult for me since I will be a little too careful and might do something wrong on the road. What I think is the best way to make teenage driving safer is to raise the age that teens can get an unrestricted license, have parent keep a better eye on their child’s driving skills, and to teach the teens about the roads more in depth in school and at home

    1. I agree with you Hunter. Parents should get involved with their teens when they are first learning to drive. They can teach their kids their experiences on the road. Also, parents should keep an eye on their kids while just learning and the basics to driving.

    2. Hunter, I agree. Teens can get very distracted on the roads. They are also likely to make bad decisions. Making the driving age older gives them a longer amount of time to understand about it. They'd also be more mature about things. I can't believe 1 in 4 teens get in accidents within 6 months! That's crazy!

      Delete
  4. If teenagers are such bad drivers, I think that they should still be able to drive. If they are eventually going to be hitting the road and driving in their adult years, they might as well be prepared and start as soon as they can. I think that teens should start their driving lessons, whether in driver's ed, or with a proper instructor, at the age of 15. I also think that some parents should have their teenage son or daughter get behind the wheel before the age of 15 so they are more prepared and have an advantage when they do start driving lessons. This would prepare them for their 6 hours and driver’s tests, making them better drivers. Most teens are responsible enough to get their permits at the age of 17 to practice to get their license. Teens that haven't proved that they can be mature behind the wheel, for example failing their written and driving tests multiple times, need a lot more practice than they are already getting, and need to wait a while before finally getting their license. I do agree with Mr. Feiler that parents should be very involved when it comes to their teenage son’s or daughter’s driving. This would ensure that the parents really enforce safe driving habits for their child to learn. It would make teens better drivers that know the laws, what to do and what not to do. They would learn more, especially with a parent in the passenger seat instructing them. I cannot drive yet, but my brother can. My dad took the time to extensively teach my brother how to drive and also teach him good driving habits. He is a really good driver because of all the time my dad spent with my brother driving. I have a few friends that can drive well for their age. I think that the best way to make sure that teenage driving is safer is for a parent to teach them what to do and what not to do. Parents should spend as much time as they can with their child to teach them how to drive, possibly preventing future accidents of reckless teen driving that can be caused by unprepared teen drivers. In addition, making the test harder would make sure that the teen drivers really know the material before getting behind the wheel.

    2. I agree with what you said Noor. Teenagers should be able to drive. They should be prepared as soon as possible, so they can drive properly. I also agree that parents should get involved with their teenagers driving.

  5. In my opinion i do think that tennagers should be allowed to drive. Many people think they shouldn’t but i think that they should because all of our lives and through our childhood we are taught and told how to be responsible. This lesson so to say has to come into action one of these days. Every kid is like, i can't wait to drive. Listen, i know not all kids drive safely or are “bad drivers” but how are we ever supposed to grow up and learn how to be responsible and do things the best way. You really can’t because you are never going to get the chance to. That is why i think tennagers should bhe allowed to drive.
I do not that the age restriction should be raised because kids shouldn’t have to wait their whole lives to just wait to drive. Yeah it is a big deal because it could be seriously dangerous but like i said before we are taught to be responsible and how are we ever supposed to learn what that is if we can never “use it”.
Now, I do think that parents should be involved in their teenagers driving. I do so so that you can make the decision whether to take them off the road depending on their skill level. Also, to choose whether to make them take more classes or something to actually help them get better and not let them endanger other people's lives.
Me, Myself can not drive yet. I am just not yet meeting the age requirement, but i can tell you that when I do start to drive i will take my classes seriously and make sure that i am a safe driver before i hit the road. Many of my friends do drive and they are good drivers because they take it seriously and don't want to put others in danger of getting injured or anything like that.
I think that the best way to make teenage driving safer is by evaluating them or testing them until they have it down to the point where they are good drivers and aren't being dumb on the road

    1. Justin, i agree with you. New drivers should be tested again and again to show they are ready to drive a car n the road with others around. Teens need to keep their eyes on the road and take driving serious or else they can endanger peoples lives.

  6. If teenage drivers are so bad at driving should they be able to drive? I think that teenagers deserve the right and respect to drive. I think that it should be a parents choose on whether or not the teen can drive, and if so who, how far, how late they can stay up. Because kids mature at different ages, one kid at the age of 15 could be as mature as another kid who is 20. The law doesn't know the kids, their parents do, so if a parent thinks their child is mature enough to drive, I feel like that kid should drive. I do not think that the law should be raised from 16-17 to 18-20 like I stated before a kid that is 15 could be a maturity equal to that of a young adult out of high school. I agree with Mr. Feiler, parents need to be more connected to their children more so when kids start their lessons on how to drive, a parent can't just hand their kid keys to a car without teaching them. Parents need to be a constant role in their kid’s life. As of now I currently do not drive full time, on weekends when we do the lawn I help drive the cars down the street to avoid getting hit by the lawnmower. So therefore I cannot say that I am a good driver. My older seniors friends are very safe when driving, once we had a track meet at Monmouth University, when we were going home we got caught in a bad storm, so my friend got off the parkway and drove on route 9 the rest of them way home because he didn't like the situation. I think that the best way to improve teenage driving is to get the parents more involved, I also think that kids should practice before they are 16 or 17 if they do that then they will have a little bit of experience under their belt. So I do not think that teens are bad drivers, I think that a majority is good while a minority is bad, and people want to make laws based on the minority. That is why driving should be based on how a person is mature.

  7. Even though teenagers are bad drivers. They still should be allowed to drive anywhere they want. Teen agers should able to drive at the age of 16 or older in my opinion. Once started, they can practice and be a very good driver in the future. If you are that type of person who want to succeed at what you do, then you are set. But if you are one of those people who don’t care and do whatever you want. Then in the future, you will be seriously hurt or even be dead. If you are a good driver, you won’t get in trouble by the police, you won’t get a ticket. Also, you won’t get our car taken away. But if you are a bad driver. Then prepare yourself in the future. You will be hit with, police getting you in trouble. Getting in a car crash and maybe hurting or killing yourself. Then your car will be taken away from your parents because you have been a bad boy or girl. Lastly, your driver’s license will be destroyed and you will never drive again and you will have to learn to take the bus. But the thing is, I do agree with Mr.Feiler. Parents should be able to get more involved with their kids with their driving. They can help them with their mistake at the driving that they do. Also, they can prevent any car crashes that will happen to you. I think that most of my friends will be good drivers in the future. But I don’t drive yet, im 15. But when I turn 16, I have to learn how to drive. So that is why teenagers should be able to drive.

    1. I agree with you Anthony, teenagers have to have practice at driving to be good in the future. And parents should make sure their kid is driving safely by monitoring them while they drive. They can help prevent accidents and tickets better than the teenager alone in the car.

  8. I feel like teens should be allowed to drive even though most are bad drivers. Teens should be allowed to drive because if they practice enough with their permit they should have no problem. So to make driving safer we should make teens have to drive longer with their permit. And if there parents help the out they can receive enough experience to be a good driver. Also teens have to realize driving isn't something cool you can joke about. You are putting other people's lives at risks every time you get in a car. So they have to realize not to goof off with their friends in the car and race and do other stupid stuff. I think they should keep the law the same because if teens just pay more attention they will not get in as many accidents. I agree with Mr Feiler that parents should be more involved in there kids driving. If parents are more involved the can help there kids with driving and to be there most of the time when there driving. This will prevent a lot of accidents. For me this doesn't apply to me because i’m too young to drive a car. But some of my friends have licenses. They are good drivers because they obey rules and are always paying attention. I think I will be a good driver when I get older. I think this because I will take it seriously and I will practice a lot. Also I will get help from my parents so they can make me better. I think the best way to make teen driving safer is to first make the test harder. Make the test so that you have to know what you're doing without having to think. Also another way to make teen driving safer is to make the teens start practicing driving earlier. You should be able to practice driving at about 15 so you're prepared. Even if you are driving in an open parking lot all the practice helps. The reason adults are better at driving is because they have enough practice and experience to not get into as many accidents as teens.
So to conclude teen drivers can be safer while driving. All they need is practice and guidance from parents. Also to take it seriously because your life isn't a game.

  9. I think teenagers should drive. I think there should definitely be a lot of practice before getting on the roads, and that involves parents, teachers, and other friends to help us teens out. It’s just one of those things we look up to while we grow up, it shouldn’t be taken away because we get in accidents. There is a test for a reason, I mean a lot of other states the ages are lower, maybe we the whole U.S. should be sixteen. There are certain rules for newer drivers, and they should be taken seriously. Parents have a big effect in this too. I most definitely think parents should be involved because their insurance is paying for our teenage license and they should be a factor in the choice of driving. I wouldn’t want to miss out on my kid driving, or learning how to drive. It’s a big milestone parents shouldn’t miss out on. Speaking of missing out, I’m missing out on driving because I’m too young. I’m totally cool with taking my time with driving because I don’t want to rush it. I don’t think I’ll like driving because I almost lost by brother in a car crash and it took a while to get used to being in a car. I remember having anxiety when driving sometimes and I think this will greatly cost how I drive. It takes a toll on who I drive with too, I don’t want to get in a car with a teenager I hardly know, it’s scary, There should be a trust in your friends who drive you around. Making teens realize that driving should be taken more seriously would be having more commercials about unsafe driving. It’s a simple way to get into someone’s mind and make a point. I think teens should be shown certain videos to know the consequences of unsafe driving. I think newer and stricter laws should be placed on unsafe and reckless driving. Maybe a five strikes and you lose you license for a month depending on how bad your incidents are. All in all teens should drive, and everyone needs to be aware of what’s going on while driving on the roads.

  10. If teenagers are such bad drivers, they should still be able to drive. Teenagers are finally getting out of their childhood and driving is making them more responsible. If teenagers have to wait to get their full driver's licenses, they might not have that many opportunities. For example, if teens want to go off to college, they have to drive there. If their parents work or they are not around, they may not be able to go if they can not drive. I think that people don't want teenagers driving because they are scared of accidents. Some teenagers aren't so smart and they think nothing will happen if they have their phones out. Well sometimes that doesn't lead to great things. I do think parents should get more involved in their teenagers driving. Like the article said, teenagers drive safer when they have their parents in the car. I think that maybe once a week a parent should be in the car to make sure their teen isn't driving reckless. Their parent should practice driving with them and teach them the right ways of driving. I can not drive yet. I hope that I am a good driver. I know that I can become one if my parent help me. I do have older friends that can drive. I realize they aren't the best drivers, so it's not as safe for me. I think that they should go out with their parents and practice. I think that if teens don't have their phones on them, they will be safer. I read a statistic online that if you are going 55 miles per hour and you look down for 5 seconds you can cross an entire football field. Now if a teen is on the parkway driving that speed and then they look down to text an accident can happen is seconds. If teens don't have their phone on them they can't text. Teens should also not drive when they are tired It is possible for them to fall asleep and that can also lead to an accident. Also, just like the article, teens would be distracted if other passengers are in the car. The passengers should be smart and not distract the driver. Teens should only focus on driving while they are in the car.

  11. Even though some teenagers can be bad drivers I think all teenagers should be allowed to get their license. The reason some teens are bad at driving it is because they do not have enough experience at driving. So if you make them get their license at 18 or 19 they are going to be bad drivers at that age instead of 16 or 17. Even though you should practice before you get your licenses when you are like 15 years old or even 16 to get the hang of it. So the only way they will get better at driving is by driving more and more to get experience. So I think it would make no sense at all to raise the driving age it would just cause more problems and things like that. I think it would cause more problems doing that because that is the age many people start getting jobs. Without a driver's license they would not be able to drive to work. So they might as well keep the age the same. Also I want to be able to drive soon so they should keep it the same age. I think parents should be somewhat involved when their son or daughter starts driving just not too much. They have to make sure they learn everything the right way first and know how to drive but after that they should let them drive on their own for awhile. I just think having your parents sitting their constantly puts too much stress on the kid and you should be calm while driving. If you are stressed while driving that is how you get in car accidents. So the parents should be somewhat involved in their kid driving. I am not allowed to drive yet but I have drove before and I think it is pretty easy. There aren’t that many things that you have to do to drive. Like just hit the gas pedal if you want to go faster or hit the brake if you have to slow down. Then just like turn the wheel if you feel like turning. I think it will be pretty easy when I start driving I think it is simple. So I think they should keep the driving age the same.

  12. I believe even though some teenagers are bad drivers, some should still be allowed to drive anyway. No matter what age you start to drive you are going to be bad at it. No one is perfect and everyone is not good at driving right away. Everyone has to start somewhere, mine as well be as a teenager, so when you have to go out in the real world and be an adult, you already know how to drive. To raise the age that teenages get full unrestricted driver's licenses form 16 and 17 years old to 18-20 years old would not be a very sensible idea. Most young adults would be in college away from their parents at 18-20 years old. Those young adults would not be able to drive responsibly yet, because they are just beginners. Most of them would not have any experience drivers to learn from, but at 16 and 17 years old, they would have there parents and older family members to help teach them drive. I young adults go out into the world and do not know how to drive, how will they be able to get around without their parents. So, they could become better drivers when they are on their own. Although, I do not agree with everything Mr. Feiler said, I do agree that parents should get more involved when it comes to their teenage son or daughter’s driving. Since, some teenagers are not very responsible when driving. Their parents should set an example and show them what to do and what not to do when driving. So, they do not put themselves or anyone else in danger. Although I cannot drive, some of my friends can. All of my friends are very responsible and smart drivers, that I do trust all of them. My parents, my neighbors, and my friends are very good drivers. I believe that I will be a very good driver. I am very responsible, I understand rules, and I know right from wrong. There are many factors to make teenage driving safer. Parents could help out, so teens would have a better understanding of driving and being safe. Teenagers could be more responsible and follow the rules, to make the roads safer for them and other people.

  13. If teenagers are bad drivers, I think they shouldn’t be able to drive. I think they shouldn’t be allowed to drive because they are not able to handle the responsibilities of being in control of a car. They don’t realize that cars are more harder to handle and that you can’t fool around when you’re driving. Some teenagers don’t think it’s that big of a deal to pay attention to the road but they don’t realize that you are putting your life and someone else’s life in danger from not paying attention. Also, texting while driving is a big issue when people are driving. They don’t see what’s happening in front of them and get distracted very easily. If they aren’t able to realize the dangers of doing these things while driving than they don’t know what can happen if it becomes fatal. It makes sense to raise the age for teenagers to get unrestricted license from 16-17 to 18-20 because it will give teens the time to mature before they start driving. If they change the age restriction it will give them more time to learn the rules of the road and all the responsibilities to driving. I agree with Mr. Feiler when he says that parents should get more involved when it comes to their son/daughter driving for the first time. They should be their influences to teach them everything they need to know about driving and the safety that they need to be aware of. Parents should be guiding their children when behind the wheel and how to keep control of the car. I am not able to drive yet but my brother just got his permit this year and some of my friends older siblings can drive. I think that when I grow up, I’m going to be a little bit shaky when I first start driving but I feel that once I start driving more often I will be able to get the hang of it. It will become easier to me after I drive more often. Starting off will be difficult because it is going to feel completely different but I will get more and more comfortable the more times I drive. I think the best way to make teenage driving safe is to show them what can happen if they aren’t driving responsibly. Show them stories on how driving irresponsibly can lead to other people’s and their own danger.

    2. I agree with you Sam. Teens don't realize that cars are a lot harder to handle than they think. They don't think that its that important to pay very close attention to the road, like you said. Just think of all the teens that text and drive and then wound up into an accident. They don't pay that close attention to the road and think driving is just something fun to do. They don't see how important it is to look at the road and think it will be all fine looking at their phone and text their friend.

    3. I agree with you Sam.Teenagers aren't responsible enough to drive and the age they get their license should be brought to a higher age.

  14. I believe that everyone has this mindset that no matter how old someone is, they still aren’t mature enough. Teenagers who do get into fatal crashes and accidents are people to sometimes make a joke out of things. Everyone’s getting older and when you take it seriously, you will focus more and not fool around. It’s not so much the teenagers being bad at driving but what they are focused on at the time. Not all of the time will a car crash be a teenagers fault, it can be the other driver who may be an adult. I think that with practice and determination there will be good drivers on the road. I don’t think it would make sense to raise the age you get your license because you will need to use your parents time to get places and you may not be able to do certain things because you don’t have any transportation. When a child is growing up, they learn everything from the person who raised them. Guardians should be involved when the teen starts driving because we look up to them and without them they might not pay attention fully. I feel like practicing with your parents or guardian would make us much better drivers other than trying to remember certain parts so you can pass the test. People learn from what they live around so if their parent’s text while driving, the child may think it’s okay. Even seat belts are a problem because parents sometimes don’t wear them but that could be the one thing that could save your life. Not all teenagers are bad drivers, it just takes a few to change someone’s opinion. Everyone should be given an equal chance, we can’t be perfect all the time. I cannot drive yet and I know that once I do start driving, my dad will help me practice. My parents are heavily involved with my grades and school work so I don’t believe that this would be any different. My dad taught my older step sister to drive and she is an excellent driver and she lives in Las Vegas. I have older friends who can drive and they can drive well. We had a performance one day and a kid in the band drove me home and he was so cautious so I could tell he was a really good driver. Also with every car you get into there is a potential risk, it’s not always the driver so I don’t believe that you should blame teenage drivers. In my opinion, all teenagers need to become a good driver is practice and devotion.

  15. If teenagers are bad drivers I still think they should be able to drive. I mean they shouldn’t be on the road if they are going to murder somebody. However, if they are monitored by their parents and doing everything they are suppose to, I don’t see what the big deal is. Personally, I don’t think it would make sense to rise the age that teenagers get full unrestricted drivers licenses from 16 and 17 in most states to 18 or even 20. Two years or more doesn’t really make a big difference it wouldn’t really affect anything. Not all teenagers are irresponsible; I mean there are adults that are more childish. I completely agree with Mr.Feiler that parents should get more involved when it comes to their teenage son or daughter driving. Firstly, if parents watch their kids and give them tips on how to drive correctly and correct when they make a mistake they will do a lot better. People are always quick to judge helicopter parents but usually their kids turn out the best. To tell the truth, older people probably drive worse than teenagers but nobody’s is complaining and trying to stop them. I most likely will be a very good driver when I get my license because; I’m good at everything I do. I think the best way to make sure a teenager is driving safe is by watching them every three months to see if they are doing what they are expected to. Also, to see if they gotten any tickets and if so you should explain to them what they did wrong and how they can make sure they won’t do it again. All in all, driving is very important in our day to day life, most people can’t even go a day without their car; therefore it’s important that we are doing everything we are suppose to in our best abilities possible to insure that nobody gets hurt.

    1. Tori, I completely agree with you. I also think teens should be able to drive as long as they know what they are doing. I do think driving is important in their day to day life, so i think your opinion is correct.

  16. Teenager should be allowed to drive. I believe during the driving construction part of the class teenage drivers should be taught that speed is what kills teenage drivers. They must understand that getting somewhere fast is not even in the best way. The restricted age we moved up from 16-17 to 18 or 20 because the skiffs teenage driver another year of classroom experience for the actually sit behind the wheel and start driving. this would give the driver a chance to wait before they could have their friends in the vehicle with them. At this young of an age. Distraction is another problem younger drivers have. The distractions become less when they get older because they learn to pay attention to what they are doing while driving. I believe parents should get more involved when it comes to teenage driver. The parent should ask more questions to know who is getting into the vehicle with their child. Another important step would be driving along with their child and then explaining to them what they see them do well or even when they see them doing wrong. They also used explain the different road conditions such as: ice, rain, snow, and win. teens need to take that into consideration while driving.
No, I cannot drive yet because I'm not that the legal age to drive. Since I'm not driving I cannot really answer the question about how my driving is. Some of my friends, however, are driving at this time. I think it be a good driver on the times comes because I'm cautious and everything around me. I also feel that with practice with my parents, listening, and learning from their experience I will pick up good habits that will make me a good driver. I think more school driver safety classes will help teenagers become better drivers. I also believe that before driving your vehicle, go over a pretest before making sure your vehicle is safe. While checking your mirrors, make sure your seat is in the proper position for your body or leg match. Check your seatbelt and secure yourself with it. Make sure every one else in the vehicle is secured in as well. Make sure you don't get distracted by the passengers in your vehicle. Also, turn yourself phone off before driving so you don't get distracted. Turn your radio down see you can pay attention to your surroundings and make sure your dashboard is cleared from disturbances. In conclusion, teen drivers get into accident due to distractions. In 2013, 2,163 teenagers died out of 243,243 injured at the age of 16-19. This proves that parents should pay more attention to their teenagers while driving on the road.

  17. When I first saw the title I was shocked on the idea of not being able to drive as a teenager, but now I’m having second thoughts. If it’s a matter of life and death then teenagers shouldn’t be driving at a young age, there’s no doubt about it. We shouldn’t even think about taking the risk of losing a loved one or anyone through a fatal car crash, even if it means waiting a few more years for a driver's license. Especially because of what Nicole Morris said in the article about how motor vehicle deaths come far frequent than cancer and suicide, we should take it into consideration because it’s worth the wait of driving. I think it would make sense to raise the age. I think 16 and 17 is too young because they have this extremely strong sense of “we could do whatever we want”, and being so caught up into that they may forget or lose sight of acting responsibly. They love the feel of complete freedom, and there’s nothing wrong with that, but they might abuse their power. However, a certain age can also be important. If they’re not able to drive by a certain age, let’s say 18 for an example, how will they be able drive on their own if they choose to go to college? Yes, parents should get involved with their son or daughter’s driving. The parents will be able to teach better responsibility to their son or daughter and teach them not to abuse their power, like I mentioned before. They can help and guide them better when getting involved. I can’t drive yet, and none of my friends drive yet either. I think I will be a good driver when I’m older. One day my mom, her friend, my friend, and I were all sitting around a table talking and we came to the topic of driving. Being completely honest, I told them that I felt skeptical about driving because the last thing I’d want is to crash into another car. My mom’s friend told me that some people drive based on their personality and that I would be a cautious, careful driver. I feel more confident now that I will be good when I get my license.

  18. I think the statement that all teenagers are bad drivers is really a stereotype, because I know friends that are under 20 and they are safer than many older people driving. I think that kids under 20 should still be allowed to drive, because when if they are not allowed to drive until they are 20 then their driving would be exactly the same as it would when they are 16 or 17. Everyone will start driving sometime and right off they will not be good at it. It does not make sense to put the driving age to 20 because by that time most kids will be in college and they cannot rely on parents or friends to get them to class or work. It will be a stupid move if they try to do that. Yes, I agree that parents should be more involved in their son’s or daughter’s driving to help start good driving habits right away. The parents that don’t let their kid do dangerous things while driving like texting while driving or not keep their eyes on the road at all times. The parents have a huge role in teaching their kid how to drive safely. I cannot drive (yet) but I am sure I will not be bad at it, but I do know friends that can drive and they are somewhat safe on the road except for a few. The best way to make a teenager drive safely is to have a parent with them while they are on their beginner year, like I said earlier, the parents are a huge role in teaching their teen to drive.

    1. I definitely agree with you Dan. It really is a very stereotypical subject, and I also know many drivers under the age of 18 actually, that drive better then must full grown adults.

  19. Teenage driving is definitely a lot more risky than adults driving because they are so new to it and teenagers think differently than adults. Adults may be more focused on being safe than teenages who might be more attentive to looking at their phone. I think there needs to be some solution or improvement to the whole problem but taking teenage driving away isn’t it. At most obtaining a license should be delayed by one year so teens can have more time to practice or learn with parents. If teens have to wait a few more years to get a license it probably won’t help much because it just delays their time to experience driving and learn from it. A few years later, teens will have the same skills as if they started a few years before because they couldn’t have been driving those first few. Me.Feiler is correct in my opinion on the fact that parents should be more involved. If parents don’t get involved with their kids’ driving then the teens might learn bad habits so the parents can’t help them fix it. Parents being involved with their teens who are learning to drive can help them in many ways by setting good examples, rules, and making sure that their kids have a good mindset. If teens have too much freedom with driving which is a very important thing it can lead to big problems. To make teens better drivers and less of a danger I think tests should be made a lot harder. If more dangerous teens are denied a license then it can stop a bad problem before it happens. Higher requirements can make teens study and practice more before the tests. More practicing will also improve their respect for driving so they take it more seriously. A combination with more parenting and harder tests which lead to more practicing will improve teen driving. With these suggestions teen driving can become a much less dangerous thing and it will decrease accidents. Not only do teens driving without proper knowledge and experience endanger themselves but also lots of people they are also driving with which can be families. The teen driving situation definitely needs to be improved so many lives of the drivers and others around them can be saved.

  20. I believe that tennagers should be allowed to drive. Many people think they shouldn’t but I disagree with them. I think that teenagers should be allowed to drive because all of our lives and childhood we are taught and told how to be responsible. I can not drive yet. I believe that the best way to make teenage driving safer for not only the driver but the other people driving around, is by testing them until they have it down to the one hundred percent, and they realize how serious this is. When people are made to do something over and over, they realize that it is a serious situation. This would definitely cut down on teenage driving stupidity.

  21. Now that i'm growing up and becoming the age where i'm allowed to drive, i hear a lot that teenagers are bad drivers. I don't really understand the phrase. If you raised the age limit of driving how would teenagers be able to practice and get better at driving? The phrase practice makes perfect is a perfect example of this. Isn't it true that all adults driving on the road now were once teenagers? To me it would seem wrong to just categorize drivers based on ages. Why is it just teenagers? We all tleast have seen a few idiots on the road that sure as hell aren't teenagers. They're the ones you press on the horn for for a good 20 seconds. The main influence of driving on teenagers come from their parents. Teenagers driving skills are a reflection based upon their parents. I feel that in order to make teenagers drive safer would be for parents to act more strict toward their children. If they receive strict information from their parents they will obey driving laws a lot easier. I cannot drive yet but my older sister can. At first I was a little weary on her driving. She was a little heavy when she would press on the gas. When i'm old enough to drive, i will make sure i am a good driver. I think knowing that if i act reckless while driving can hurt more than just me. That it could harm other people and take people's lives. At first i will be a little bad at driving as so will everyone else because that's human nature but then i will get a hang of it. I think the number one way to protect everyone on the road and to make teens better drivers is to enforce the law more than before. Alot of laws are bent and people are given warnings. Laws like texting while driving are definitely not obeyed especially with younger drivers. Cars nowadays have speakers where you can talk through the car on the phone. Honestly yes it is very handy but drivers are very distracted when they are in conversations. Whether the conversation isn't important or very important your full attention is not on the road endangering yourself and other drivers.

  22. I don’t think that teenage drivers should honestly be allowed to drive.I think that because driving can be very dangerous and you have to be responsible out on the road.Driving is more safe today and you don’t have to worry as much but teenagers are different.Teenagers are less responsible and don’t take driving on the road as serious. Most teenagers that drive normally know what they're doing and know how to drive but they aren't as alert and aware as you have to be when driving on the road. That's why it would make sense to raise the age for teenagers to get their full unrestricted driver's license. This means that they would have more time to learn how to drive and by the time they get their license they'll be responsible, safe drivers.I don't think that parents should get anymore involved in their teenagers driving then they already would. They should give their teenage kids more advice on how to drive and the responsibilities but they shouldn’t take control of the teenagers driving because then the teenage driver wouldn’t learn anything and not become a better driver.I cannot drive yet but by the time I'm able to get my license I think I'll be able to drive well because I am a more responsible student and I'm more aware of how dangerous it is to drive.I know that you have to be aware or on top of your game when driving or else you’ll die.Teenagers need to be more supervised when learning how to drive and have to have more practice before driving on the road.I think that state driving programs should at least bump up the age to get their license and not have it so young. That way teenagers are more experienced and more responsible when they go out and drive.
